I picked up my copy of Angels of Death today and decided to review the new psychic powers. You can find the full review here: http://standwargaming.blogspot.co.uk/2016/04/angels-of-death-codex-review-part-1-new.html

Overall, I like the new powers. There appears to be some very powerful psychic powers in there; Shifting Worldscape could be devastating if you can use it right. What do you think of the new powers? Far too powerful or a nice change?

I wonder if tournaments will allow them. I have one at the end of the month and we have already been told that we cannot use them (the new relics and warlord traits are allowed though, so not all bad).

Also, I am currently running a competition to win a FREE battle demi-company. See http://standwargaming.blogspot.co.uk/2016/04/one-year-giveaway-win-free-battle-demi.html for the details.

Why wouldn't they be allowed in tournaments?

Some tournaments limit new releases (extreme example - something new comes out a few days before the tournament). Other than that, I've never heard of a tournament doing anything with the psychih phase except putting a cap on warp charge dice, and it's been a while since I've seen people do that

TO organizers tend to protect the meta. Some do this with all sorts of arbitrary house rules, ban lists or restrictions, others have the releases must be x days/weeks/months old rule.

I don't like those rules at all but some maybe even the majority of the tournament players do seem to like them.

These powers have the potential to effect the meta so they could be (temporarily) banned in lots of tournaments.

If Invisibility isn't straight-up banned, what is going on in ANYONE'S head to suggest these powers might be gamebreaking or banned?

TOs rarely ban new stuff just because it would 'affect the meta'.

Time-limit bans are generally just to ensure that everyone has a chance to actually see the new rules. Anything more permanent is usually just because the item in question is seen as severely unbalanced or game-breaking.

They may ban the new Geokinesis power that moves terrain just because it's a hassle for boards with static terrain. Depends on when the tourney is, however.

The power states that it only works on moveable terrain, so not really.

Invisibility is comp'ed in many tournaments to have units firing at them at BS1 rather than snap shots. This obviously means that template and blast weapons can still affect this unit. I think this is a decent change as you would expect flamers to still affect the invisible unit and its not too much of a penalty. This, however, falls apart when you consider D-weapon flamers from the likes of Wraithguard. Invisibility seems to be one of the few counters to this in the game, so it's a toss up over how much to limit Invisibility, but how much of an advantage to give to other armies. I don't envy many TO's will all the decisions they must face. No matter what they decide, someone is going to feel unjustly penalised.

The issue is that the power is basically dependent on how the person build the terrain board. If the board has ruins/forests/walls/etc that are permanently bolted down then they can't move it but if the ruins are freely sitting on the table then it can be moved. Also tournaments might have standardized terrain layouts across all their tables and they would want to keep the terrain in its original positions for consistency sake.

The Geomancy table is a red herring; it's the fulmination Electrodisplacement one that's the real killer. Switch a Wolfstar into the place of a Scout, and all of a sudden you've got your Deathstar in CC turn 1. You're not even dependant on there being terrain for it to work.

Has to be the Psykers unit and a non-vehicle unit, so no teleporting Knights.

I'm hoping the ITC will nerf these quickly just like they did with the Tau stuff... That won't happen though due to the major outcry from IoM players

I'm gonna say this now, not everyone has the funds to buy the latest huge kit.
And not everybody plays WAAC list.
Some people are forced to play against them because they cant get a game otherwise.

That supports my point then doesn't it? Since you actually ahd to buy a Storm surge whereas you don't have to buy psychic powers

The only marine players that think Stormsurges are scary are the mediocre ones.

Or, at least, the ones without gravs.

So, every single Chaos Marine player in other words.

Oh wait, I guess to "deal with it", every Chaos Marine player should now pay their 'Black Legion Tax' and run 300-400+pts of Sorcerers, while making the rest of their army even worse than a 'standard' CSM army.
