I'm finding that I'm enjoying painting AoS models much more than 40K. I played AD&D MANY years ago and somehow the AoS models just speak to me more.

What's your preference? I don't mean fluff and the story lines and what not. From a purely modeling/painting perspective, do you prefer one over the other?

If I had to choose Age of Sh** over 40k - I'd be choosing 40k.

I dislike the AoS models intensely. You may notice. I do like the bloodreavers funnily enough but otherwise, not much of any of the new ones. Mind you, I LOVE my Skaven from 8th and earlier. And while I'd love to really see a new plague monk model... I don't think it's happening. But all those other new models? they're just... too impersonal, too glitzy, and too ornate. Imo ^_^

But anyway, do whatever you love! you can do both - heck I do like five systems! not including my RPG minis so go for it. It's more about what you love doing than anything else. It's your money do what you want and have fun! who cares what I or anyone else really thinks?

If you're mostly into painting the models and aren't playing the games, just cherry pick the models and paint the ones that speak out to you

Personally, I think the AoS starter kit comes with the most amazing models for a box set, in terms of painting potential. There's just so much variety and plastic for the price.

If you are into 40k models, you might consider one of the box sets, too, to get you into it. A lot of them give you great value in terms of number of models, and many of the box sets (like Dark Vengeance or Space Hulk) come with snapfit models, which are easier to get to the point of painting.

If you're just picking nice minis why limit yourself just to GW?

My preference, in very very general terms, is probably 40k > WHFB > AoS. But that's very general. A regiment of Night Goblins I think looks quite awesome and some of the WHFB big things I prefer to the big things I find in 40k.

AoS in general doesn't appeal to me. The new models are often too blinged up for my liking, Sigmarines aren't terrible but they also don't do anything for me. The old WHFB models on round bases often look off to me because it's often clear they were designed to be ranked up rather than loose formations.

FB > 40k > AOS at the moment for me

I haven't really, but I still find that the AoS minis speak to me the most.

Overall I probably prefer 40k as I feel that the 40k armies look more cohesive and leaves more room for conversions.

Aos most definitely. 40k gets pretty boring to paint quickly to be honest. 40k does seem faster though.

I like them both however 40k is just more expansive than AoS. I mean really with AoS you just don't get to make as much stuff (different stuff that is) I like them both though. Just pick whichever one you like more.

AoS is probably GW's most accessible game-system so far - if there were people who play it in my region, i'd quit 40k in a blink of an eye. Its a great casual & party game with so many awesome looking mini's. And that's probably AoS' biggest downside as well - the small community and the game being in its infancy. 40k's mini's tend to be a 10+ years old and it get boring really quick painting them.

If you prefer painting AoS models, but want to play a (relatively) better game, then use your AoS models for 40k. Both Sigmar and Khorne AoS models come on standard 40k marine bases. Aside from missing powerpacks on their backs, both flavors can stand in for assault-based space marines of any type. Your only problem will be modeling ranged weapons onto them, which can easily be fixed by getting the specific weapons and just gluing them to their back or side as if strapped on.

Specific models like the Sigmar mounted lord can be space wolf lords on thunderwolves, the Khorne lord's pet dog can be a flesh hound for an allied detachment, everything has an analog.
