Hello,

I haven't played an honest game of 40k in about 4 years and have decided to get back into it with my Necrons. My local game shop is having an escalation league in which we start with one amount of points and are given more points to add to our core army as time elapses. We are starting with 1100 points and I believe we are ending at 2000 in several weeks.

I've been reading through the new codex and have decided to try for a decurion attachment. For the first week I am thinking that I'll just field the Reclamation legion and add to it as additional points are allotted. Here's what I've come up with, any criticism is greatly appreciated:

HQ: Overlord + Res Orb - 105 points
Elites: 5x Lychguard with warscythes - 125 points
Troops: 2x 10 man groups of warriors, one of which has a ghost ark and 5 Immortals - 450 points
Fast Attack: 3x Tomb Blades - 54 Points
Heavy Support: 1x Doom Scythe and 1x Monolith - 360 points

Total: 1094 points

I am considering dropping res orb and getting phylactery.
Let me know what you all think.

Working on it

The list looks fairly solid.

I would definitely use the 6 points left over for either Shieldvanes for 3+armor or Scopes for Ignores cover

<Dynasty> ~10500pts
War Coven of the Coruscating Gaze ~3000pts
Thrice-Damned Plague Corps ~3250pts
Admech (TBN) ~3500pts +30k Bots and Ulator

As long as you run this as a CAD you are fine. You will not get the bonuses for the Reclamation Formation right now.

List building has had a major change in 7th edition. Go and review that part of the 7th ed book.

As for your Res Orb vs Phylactery: Most of the time your overlord is going to be either taking no damage at all or is killed in one turn, either by direct melee damage or the Unit losing moral and getting sweeping advanced. The Res Orb will be a good one turn help keeping his unit alive a little bit longer.

The only time I like the Phylactery is when put on a Catacomb Command Barge where you will be spreading out the damage between the Overlord and the CCB, then you get two rolls to restore Wounds or Hull Points.

You have 6 points, which is exactly what is needed to place Nebloscopes on the Tomb Blades so they will ignore cover OR put Armor Veins on them for them for 3+ armor. Scopes are usually better.

You will need to run this as a CAD since the lone doom scythe would make the reclamation legion unbound.

I do have some recommendations (a list of the models you own would be helpful so we can figure out what you should use). Firstly, your list isn't very mobile. Except for the single ghost ark and tomb blades, you will be having a tough time getting around. Necron heavy support options (with the exception of heavy destroyers and spyders) aren't great this edition. The best ways to get the firepower you need is through the destroyer cult or judicator battalion. In cc, you will want canoptek harvest wraiths (who are super durable and have ok damage output) or flayed ones (who have tons of attacks). Lychguard aren't bad but they are slow, and the warscythe lychguard are very vulnerable to any ap3 shooting.

A fair suggestion, I own the following:

2x Overlords
1x Spider
3x wraiths
12x Scarabs
4x groups of 12x warriors
1x Monolith
1x Ghost Ark
1x Annihilation Barge
5x Deathmarks
10x Immortals
5x Lychguard
1x Doom Scythe
3x Tomb Blades

You've got enough for the best two formations in the necron armoury, the Reclamation Legion and the Retribution Phalanx. Add to the RL the Canotek Harvest and you've got a decurion backs up by never dying warriors blobs.

I'd do:

RL:
Overlord,
2 x immortals
3 x warriors /w GA
Lychguard /w swords and shields
Tomb blades

CH
Spyder
3 wraiths
4 scarabs

RL
Overlord
Warriors
Scarabs
Either buy or proxy a stalker.

Add deathmarks as necessary, adjust numbers and war gear to fit. Keep both overlords together with shield guard and keep bring back a suicide warrior squad using From The Sands We Arise! which is the number one OP OMG BROKEN rule the necrons have...

Hi! I think first I need to explain 7th edition detachment and formations.

Every army needs 1 or more detachments. A CAD (the old force org chart) can be a detachment.

A formation is a grouping of units that are usually given a set of special rules when taken as part of the formation. For example, the Reclamation Legion is a formation. Formations alone can be used as a Detachment if you want.

The Decurion Detachment is a special type of detachment that includes a set of Formations and Auxiliary choices. It requires a Reclemation Legion as it's core (which you have). But then it also requires one of the Auxiliary choices. The lone Doom Scythe makes your Decurion unbound because it doesn't fit into any of the choices. The only way to make your chosen list bound is to use a CAD (thus you don't get the bonuses of a Decurion or the special rules of the Reclamation Legion formation).

So... I recommend that you keep what you have BUT, remove the Monolith and Doom Scythe and instead take one of the formations available to the Decurion detachment. So your list might look like this:

Decurion:

Core:
Reclamation Legion:
Overlord w/ Res Orb
10x Warriors w/ Ghost Ark
10x Warriors
5x Immortals
3x Tomb Blades (give these Shield Vanes and Nebuloscope)

Auxiliary:
Canaptek Harvest:
1x Spider
3x Scarabs
3x Wraiths w/ whip coils

I haven't added the points but that's an example of a full Decurion Detachment. So you get the Decurion bonus (+1 to RP rolls and something else) and the Reclamation Legion special rules (Relentless and something else, sorry codex not on me) for all the models in the Legion and the Harvest special rules (Wraiths and Scarabs get RP from the Spider) for the Harvest models.

After that you can add stuff to the Reclamation Legion as you get points.

EDIT: The poster above recommends adding a Retribution Phalanx formation as a separate detachment. It's a good idea but you won't find the Retribution Phalanx rules in the codex. That comes from a box set that GW sold. The rules for it can be found online I believe.
