I've been playing 40k for a while now and have spent the majority of my time playing Eldar. I want to get away from the army for when I play a few of my friends who make faces before my army even hits the table. I started back in 5th edition when the army was not at its current level of cheese, and am looking for a more casual (albeit crappier) army to help fill in the games against lower tier armies.

Currently I'm looking for something in the realm of the Imperium to start, preferably Ad Mech, or Dark Angels. I haven't played a number of games against either, and both look interesting to start.

If anyone has made this switch away from Eldar to another army any advice would be great.

There is nothing that beats Eldar. After Eldar there is nothing.

The answer is purely subjective. I'd go for the opposite of Eldar. Eldar is fast and hard hitting, but fragile. I'd go with CSM.

Ad Mech are pretty mid tier, only becoming broken when you run the War Convocation formation (Cult Mech, Ad Mech, a knight, and free upgrades).

Dark Angels are also pretty mid tier. A lot of fun and really only become broken if you run all bikes

I recommend Orks.

Do you any experience playing either? Have fun with either one more than the other?

Never played much Ad Mech, though they're very glass cannon. They can hit hard, but are mostly T3 4+ guys with a 6+ FNP. Dark Angels are my main army. They're like SM minus some nifty toys, but with some fun tricks. First, they have hands down the best landspeeders and bikes, due to the new Jink shenanigans. They have an improved Overwatch, and they now have their own Psychic tree, Interomancy (really good Leader ship shenanigans, some better attacks, mainly CC oriented). Also, they're Deathwing are all terminators and are decent. Not what they used to be, but fun, Twin Linked on deepstrike and can run and shoot that turn. The Deathwing Knights are also the best melee Terminators in the game, with S6 AP3 weapons at Initiative or a single S8 AP2 attack, plus when base to base with two guys they all get +1 Toughness.

Ad mech is the way to go in my opinion. They're really fun to play and have lots of cool special rules. War con is the competitive build for them but skitarii and cult Mechanicus are fun by themselves too. I play war con as my main army.

Excellent. Thanks for all the commentary. Seems like they'd be a fun base to start off of, with some varying tactics to Eldar for sure. Seems like the bikes would be a good start to ally some varying elements of the imperium as well.

Whats the main focus? I heard glass cannon above. Any fun units or weapons you like to use?
