This is a bit of a Wall o' Text post, apologies...

So I've been trying to get some information about titan painting schemes, and as with much of the Horus Heresy, there's just so much out there that I really don't know where to start...

Some time ago I got a Warhound titan, and immediately painted it to match with the paint scheme of my 40k Salamanders army, as it was the only one I intended to use at the time, so I played to the narrative that the Salamanders chapter has obtained this titan and maintains it as a part of their permanent force. (See Attached for (terrible) images of the titan)

As with most of my army, it has very little in the way of iconography, as I am not a fan of the scales and lizard head heraldry of the Salamanders, but love their rules and fluff.

ANYWAY, I've come back to the hobby after about a year and my focus is squarely on Horus Heresy armies, specifically Pre/Heresy era Salamanders, AND Death Guard (not nurglified, just tainted and traitors).

As such, and because I don't have unlimited moneys for little resin shooty men, I really am starting to think about ways to use any future titans for both armies... As some time in my future I know for sure I'll be getting a Reaver and Warlord if it's the last thing I do...

Does anyone have an infomation on how the Titan Legions work, and how I would best incorporate titans into two armies that are on either side of the Heresy?
Is there a particular Titan Legion in the fluff/ novels (which I'm currently reading through) that mention any Titan Legion that was present in the Campaigns of either (or both) of these Legions?
Where can I find mention of the Titan legions present at the Dropsite Massacre, as that is pretty much the site that I consider these armies occupying in the way I am modelling them.

Apart from that, is there any general suggestions on what people think would be a good colour scheme for titans that could be used by either side?

Thanks!

Looking up Titans on Lexicanum or the 40k wiki will get you a ton of stuff. I would post a link, but my phone is too cheap for that kinda fancy gubbinz.

Your Warhound looks like a Legio Astraman Titan more commonly known as the morning stars - they're a loyalist Legion. The best source for Titan Legion backgrounds is the current series of HH books. Tempestus (see below) is in book IV and you can be sure that plenty more will appear as more books are released.

Also, if you're inclined, look up the ancient Adeptus Titanicus and Codex Titanicus from 1989 along with the Titan Legions books from about 1994. Lots of old juicy background in those too.

Finally, Legio Tempestus was divided between Loyalists on Mars and Traitors on Estaban III, so they'd make an option.

Agreed. If you find yourself likely to 'flip-flop' in allegiance, you can't go wrong with Legio Tempestus. They're one of the three originals (Ignatum, Tempestus, Mortis) and have a pretty cool colour scheme.

Seconded the Horus Heresy Books.

The best Titan fiction I can point you at are:

Mechanicum - Horus Heresy Novel
Honour To The Dead - Horus Heresy Audio Book
Titanicus - WH40k Novel
Storm Of Iron - WH40k Novel
Priests/Lords/Gods Of Mars - WH40k Novels
Titan - WH40k Graphic Novel

For some IOM titan vs Ork titan action, read Helsreach. Some goodies in there iirc.

Man my warhound really does resemble a Legion Astraman titan... Pity my black/grey markings differ from the blue/white stripes :(

So chances are i'll end up going for one of those... Tempestus has really nice markings actually and it being a mix of loyalist and traitor is really nice.

The blue main colour is a nice colour that'd slip well between the green of the salamanders and off-white of the death guard Thanks!

Thanks for all the resources guys, I'll have to take a look around these things for nice mentions to add to to fluffiness of my armies

Nothing wrong with those. You have to realise the stripes, chevrons and similar markings are akin to a MediƦval Knights heraldry. So, I don't see why your Legio Astaman Titan can't have black as part of its colour scheme. I mentioned this in another thread recently, but remember that Forgeworld's can also have vassal domains. Angstrom being one of the more remembered vassals of Ryza - they even have a Legio Crucius maniple permanently stationed there. Your Titan could be from one such Vassal Forgeworld with a slight variant in colours, but still true to the parent legion.

Finally, I'm confident that Forgeworld will show a Legio Astaman colour scheme in a future HH book along with background and, if you're lucky, a transfer sheet.
