So I was flicking through the alliance matrix on the ibook version of the BRB and came across an unusual entry, which was Tau. They are only CTA with demons and Tyranids. Similarly they only have BB with themselves, but are AOC with eldar and bizarrely, necrons.

I've wondered how best to exploit this gap in the tau line up that is their infantry and flyer presence, which necrons seem to do far better. What would you pair up to bring to the party on this in both competitive and fun games.

Open to innovative ideas from necrons and CSM, as they are 2 armies i really dont know very well at all.

I plan on using Canoptek Harvest as my melee/deathstar lock-in.
I thought about using Eldar as my Psychic powerhouse, but the Warlock/Farseer formation is too expensive on bikes...

I always liked the idea of running 3 minimum canoptek harvests with a tau forces that involved a bunch of broadsides, sky rays and crisis suits.

I think they'd work great together on paper, as tau just need something to tie up fast/hard hitting CC units. I just didn't like the idea of running tau with necrons - can't really see them together from a fluff perspective...

Fully Painted Armies: 2200pts Orks 1000pts Space Marines 1200pts Tau 2500pts Blood Angels 3500pts Imperial Guard/Renegades and 1700pts Daemons 450pts Imperial Knights

I have the feeling that a Tau army always depends on much synergy between its units. Every addition of a non-Tau unit seems to be crippling, since it doesn't work together with the rest. That being said, Tau lack close combat defense. Once the enemy reaches you, you are screwed. I can imagine Wraiths and a blob of warriors as nice working tarpits to defend the gunline.
I don't really know what CSM could offer tau. Their suits are better than our vehicles and in an allied detachment you can't take PMs as troops, which would be a good addition due to durability, which Tau lack. The same for MoN Bikers. Obviously renegade and Chaos knights aren't bad. Sorcerers for psychic defense would be nice. So... 1group cultists, 1 sorcerer with Bike, 1 group Bikers with MoN, 1 group PMs with Rhino to take Objectives. But again, you probably can take some Tau units for those points with more synergy for the rest of your army
