So just out of nowhere. I was playing xenonauts. (good game) and all of a sudden, my soldier died to a burst of a aliens plasma rifle. So... Being me, I smashed my head agienst the laptop.... Which caused something terrible to happen.... My hard drive got fried while playing this game followed by the blunt trauma of my head. So now its fixable. But my dad insisted on getting a new computer for me. SO my grandparents pitched in 500 for it and my dad might give me another 200 or so. But.... what do I buy that could run a game (lets say... arma?) on at least high settings and run 60fps. That is also somewhere near 900-1000.

I hope this doesn't get blocked, I really need help....

And the headbutt part might be over exaggerating. Stop talking about that and help me....
And I have a perfectly healthy kitten on my lap.... I don't headbutt it....

You head butted your laptop, fried it, and your family is buying you a new computer worth at least $700?

This was before I read the FAQ and what is not aloud. I posted something before and it got blocked.

I'd suggest a squeezable stress-release toy first before investing in another computer.

I personally build mine - has a greater sense of value, I know the worth of my components and it works out cheaper in the end compared to store PCs. Plus, if things go wrong, you have a good idea how to breadboard it and repair.

He was playing xenonauts, it's basically X-COM except made by XCOM fans so think XCOM but even harder and more complex because that's what X-COM fans like.

Headbutting his laptop is honestly one of the more reserved reactions for those games.

After playing Xenonauts, I fully understand wanting to headbutt your computer
It is a luck my monitor is too far away, so I am stuck headbutting my keyboard.

In any case. What is the kind of game you want to run? Arma is quite an old game, shouldn't need too strong of a computer. Arma III on the other hand... The Arma series is probably one of the most demanding games out there if you want to have large battles.
Take a look at the recommended specs for the game and then buy something that is better than that.

My father got a Lenovo Edge 2 about 2 months ago when his Dell Latitude laptop crashed (if you really are curious about the Dell Latitude laptop, it froze, he powered it off, and when he tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't boot). He uses the Lenovo Edge 2 for gaming. I'll let you click on the link for a full story about the Lenovo Edge 2, but here are the highlights:

8GB RAM

1TB Hard Drive

Windows 10

He got it for $649.99, if you factor in a discount for Kaspersky security software at best buy. Factor in tax, it was about $700. Actual price minus tax and Kaspersky is $679.99 He really likes it. It's better than his old Dell Latitude.

Hope I helped!

Be warned though, it has a Intel HD graphics card, which afaik is not very good for gaming at all. I don't think it will run a game like Arma 3 on anything except low settings (altough running Arma 3 on low is quite easy, even my computer can do it ).

That will not run a game like ARMA at high at 60FPS.

I'd also hardly call the specs posted above to be the 'highlights'.

If you want to game, you need a proper graphics card, not an integrated one.

If you're building a desktop, for ~900-1000, you could make a solid build with a good i5, 8-12GB of RAM, and a 960 or 970 depending on how much RAM, storage (especially SSD space) you want. For a laptop, you could probably find a decent ASUS/MSI/Gigabyte for that price with a 960M (maybe even 970M) and ~8GB of RAM with a decent i7 or i5. Obviously the laptop's performance will be less than an equivalent desktop, but if you value portability, then find a good gaming one.

*Edit* Quick BestBuy search found my several ASUS, Lenovo, and MSI proper gaming laptops, like this one.

I'll agree completely. I'm not a big computer guy but I know a little. I bought a desktop with similar stats listed from ACER and it had integrated graphics and they sucked simply put. I bought a dirt cheap card for maybe $40 bucks and it outperformed considerably. You'll definitely want to go that route

Yeah, my laptop has integrated graphics too and it can only run really old games (which is fun because my desktop is like 5 years older than my laptop yet can run all games except the latest ones).

And on that note, I would like to ask for some help too. My desktop still runs 32-bit Windows, but it could support 64-bit Windows and I would like to upgrade so I can play Eternal Crusade.
I know that upgrading will erase all of the files on my hard drive, and I have been given the advice to transfer them to an external hard drive. But my PC has two hard drives. One (the C drive) is the default drive that came with my PC, the other (the D drive) came seperate and was installed later on. Now my question is: would the D drive be a safe place to store files, or not? Will the upgrade process erase only the stock C drive or will it also erase all installed additional drives?

EDIT: I just realized you're in Canada. You may need to search for a Canadian laptop sales outlet.

There are some gaming laptops that should be good enough for you. Still, the higher end laptops will cost $1500 - $2500 easily with bleeding edge going for as much as $3000 or more.

Windows does not erase extra drives unless you do so deliberately. As long as you leave your D drive/partition alone, you should be okay.

Thanks. Saves me from having to get a new hard drive.
