Would you rather GW follow which of the following approach for 40k :
Rebalance the game by nerfing my most favourite competitive unit of my Codex ?
Do away with the points system entirely and balance the game differently ?

Just curious about which of these two evils you'd prefer !

This isn't hard at all.

Option 1: Just fix one of the top armies by adding points to the formations and nerfing the crazy stuff. This in't perfect but a start .

Option 2: Kill the game :\
Not a good thing at all.

The problem with op stuff is most of the time that it is too point efficient ( or free ) making everything free isn't balancing the game that is just giving up

Just make everything cost 0 points so anyone can bring anything they want to any game!

I play the Imperial Guard so there would be no nerfing anyway

Because I can totally imagine GW being able to balance a game for pick up and/or competitive gaming without a points system.

Totally.

Interesting to see how many people are willing to take a nerf to their favourite units form the game

I'd rather they buff bad units.

So the first option makes no sense. You would nerf the best unit out of already bad codexes like Orks, Chaos and IG?

Nerfing one unit out of the Eldar codex will do nothing to fix it.

Or burn the whole game to the ground like AoS?

Sigh, sometimes it's hard to be nice and follow the forum rules on here.

Me too. Sometines, the coolest mechanics sadly are quite strong and nerfing their units would mean tossing such mechanics away.

Now if everyone had cool mechanics... what a game it would be!

That isn't what the poll shows. The poll just shows they don't want the game to be wrecked.

The Dark Eldar don't have anything so good that a nerf would be justified.

That being said, if nerfing my Grotesques (clearly our best unit) is the price for balancing all the rest of the armies, I'd pay it gladly.

This is an alternative analysis

I actually now seriously wonder why people are so attached to the point system and the equal armies of 40k. Is it because of habit ? Is it because it is a metric for ranking units ? Is it because it is the only perceived balance system ?

I find it works and having seen AOS I don't want GW to try alternatives. They can't be trusted.

Well, clearly, there has never been any widespread complaints about balance ever in the history of 40k, neither in 5th ed, nor now :p

Just being a little sarcastic and I can understand the disagreement with AOS (which to be fair, should have been an alternative system to WHFB rather than a replace, even if the game system is bad at least it would have been not as angrily received).

I'm just wondering whether other balace types like Victory Conditions (done properly) could replace the points.

For pick up games and tournaments, you'd need some army building structure. Points are the most common, offer the most freedom to players, and generally the simplest. Other solutions typically involves some sort of fixed lists set in history where real world examples are the inspiration.

Victory conditions as some sort of balancing mechanic still doesn't work because then you're still negotiating over how many models to put on the table and of what quality.

Now, a point free system can function, but pretty much exclusively as some sort of dice rolling exercise among friends or method of acting specific scenarios...all of which can be done in a system with points anyways.

At my desk

How I'd rate nerfing all of my armies:

Eldar: I'd be quite happy to have the Wraithknight, D-Weapon nonsense and Scatterbikes nerfed.
Dark Eldar: Mostly gets competitive when combined with Eldar shenanigans. No need to nerf as a standalone army.
Harlequins: Solitaire could be less of a beast, I suppose. But they aren't super competitive anyway.
Blood Angels: *laughs*
Chaos Space Marines: *laughs harder*

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

A nerf to my Wyverns is a small price to pay for some semblance of sanity to return to the hobby.
