Subject: Grey Knights at a RTT [using the NEW powers!]
A FLG was holding an 1850 Adepticon-style tournament, and I decided to give the new powers a spin using my Grey Knights. I did not bring by any means an optimized list, but I wanted to run a 100% Terminator list, and see how the new powers helped them out. I knew ahead of time that there would be some interesting things happening, so I took pictures and notes throughout so I could do reports to share with the dakka community. Here's my list and strategy going in:
I knew that Adepticon missions heavily favored Obsec, so i wanted to ally in GK for an Obsec unit, otherwise I would have loved to do full NSF. My strategy was to choose which of the new branches of powers to roll on based on my opponent, leaning toward Librarius for Veil of Time, or Fulmination for Electrodisplacement. If I fought Knights or mech heavy, I would go for Technomancy for all the haywire. I really wanted to make sure I was getting Draigo into combat ASAP, start slinging some Hammerhands and Force, and watch the fireworks.
Round 1 My first opponent is Eldar and Harlequins! This is usually the army that punishes elite armies with their bajillion shots, so i was worried. The mission was King of the Hill and Emperor's Will.
His list:
Spoiler:
Eldar CAD 2- Farseers on Jetbikes 4 or 5- Scat Packs, 1 with an upgraded Warlock 1- Hornet: dual Pulsars 1- Wraithknight: dual Cannons Harlequins 2- Shadowseers: 1 with a relic that made his unit fearless 3 Troupes with transports (dual Shuriken cannons), troupe leaders upgraded with a weapon to rend on to-hit of 6 1- Heavy support skimmer with a haywire gun
Psychic Powers:
Spoiler:
He got some boss powers! Here are my powers and warlord trait. Once I got Electrodisplacement, I started fishing for Veil but didn't get it.
Deployment:
Spoiler:
He won the roll to deploy/choose first turn, and deployed aggressively. He put his Wraithknight, along with a Scatpack with all his Psykers front and center. He reserved the remainder of his Scat Packs. I deployed Draigo, along with a 10 man terminator squad (non Obsec), and both Libby's right up on my line. My plan was to drop in my Paladins, hopefully the 3 man squad, and Electrodisplace them for a turn 1 charge. I combat squadded my Obsec Termies and put one in deep strike, and one to walk on (for my Emperor's Will).
Turn 1
Spoiler:
In a bizarre turn of events, my opponent gives me first turn, not realizing he was looking at a potential turn 1 charge. It may not have mattered, as I would have seized on a 4+ thanks to my warlord trait. Both my reserves come in, and I drop the 3 man unit close to his lines. I lay up with the 5 man unit, wanting to hold the Hill, and shoot the Hornet.
I throw all but 1 dice at Electrodisplacement, and it goes off, resulting in a wound to my Libby. The Termies activate Force on my single remaining dice. I positioned my squad so that Draigo and the Hammers were nearest the Wraithknight, and everyone else was up in the Jetbike's face. The 5 man squad shoots the Hornet, forcing it to jink and maybe taking a HP. I multi-charge and the pain train gets a-rollin. In another dice oddity, Draigo hits with all 4 attacks, and then wounds with all 4, despite needing 5's! He killed the Wraithknight by himself, and took only 1 wound in return! The rest of the squad crushed the bikers, and the remaining Farseer failed morale and jetbike'd off the board. BRUTAL first turn.
Bottom of 1
Spoiler:
The Clowns come looking for revenge, and circle the Terminators. He maybe does a wound to Draigo, and kills a Terminator or so with shooting. He then charges in the 2 Troupes that could get close enough to charge. The third had to move 12" just to get as close as it did.
Draigo challenges one of the Troupe masters (to get those rending weapons out of the way), and crushes him, despite swinging last. The rest of the Troupe does kill about half my squad before being cut down in return. I consolidate closer to the transports.
Top of 2
Spoiler:
Both my other Termies come in from Reserve, and I attempt to teleport my double-Psycannon combat squad onto his Emperor's Will, but scatter near the edge of the board. They eventually shoot his heavy support skimmer down, despite it popping it's 4++.
I walk my other 5 man unit onto my Emperor's Will.
Draigo and crew activated Hammerhand and elected not to shoot, instead just multi-charging all 3 skimmers in range, smashing them and forcing the occupants to disembark.
The Paladins lumber toward the Hornet, and take it out with Psycannon shooting.
Bottom of Turn 2
Spoiler:
All of his reserves come in, and he focuses on my Obsec Termies holding my Emperor's Will. It actually took all 3 units shooting at them to kill them, as the first 2 only killed 1 Terminator.
When the third unit shot at them, this was my roll to make my saves. Hilarious.
He tried to take out my other Obsec unit by assaulting with his remaining Harlequins, but they were far outmatched and only the Troupe Master survived to run away. His Shadowseer had attempted the Mirrors power, but was denied by my double handful of warp charges. I consolidated toward him to run him down later.
Top of 3
Spoiler:
I Gated back toward my Emperor's Will, and moved the 5-man Pallies and 3-man Pallies toward the bikers. I shot Emperor's Wrath at the bikers, maybe killing 1 or two, and unloaded at each unit in the shooting phase, just trying to make them all jink. When the dust settled, 1 was erased, and another squad was down to 1 bike.
Just bubble-wrapping this one to make it hard for him in case anyone survives.
Bottom of 3
Spoiler:
My opponent does the only thing he can at this point, which is run away and survive to try to salvage some points. He moved to the hill, to stop me from scoring next round, as he was Obsec.
Top of 4
Spoiler:
I opt not to chase with Draigo, and instead bubble wrap my objective. The other Paladins and Termie units were able to kill the 3-man squad of bikers, but the lone jetbike survived the onslaught of Psycannons and Stormbolters.
Bottom of 4
Spoiler:
Again, the only move left; go to the corner and try and hold out.
Top of 5
Spoiler:
Unfortunately for him, I excel at bubble-wrapping. I made my way so that he could not get within 3" of my Emperor's Will. He could get to his, but the points wouldn't matter, so we called it. CRUSHING VICTORY FOR THE GREY KNIGHTS!
Bottom of 5
Spoiler:
Game's done, silly pants.
Thoughts on round 1? I'll post the other 2 games as I get time!

Always great seeing a pure GK list in action, great job against Eldar, nice to see that their psychic trickery was no match for the might of the Emperor's chosen. Congrats on the victory!

Subject: Re:Grey Knights at a RTT [using the NEW powers!]
Round 2 My round 2 opponent was the dreaded War Convocation. His list was packed full of Grav, plasma, and of course an Imperial Knight. On top of that, he was smart enough to bring a Culexus to stop psychic powers. This had all the makings of a quick loss, and my prediction was 2 turns before I was tabled. If I could survive, the mission actually was in my favor. It was Divide and Conquer with Double Kill Points. I had so few kill points to give up, that if I could just hang in and kill some stuff I might actually score some points.
His list:
Spoiler:
Not only that, but with his re-roll he got the warlord trait to always get the best Canticle.
My powers:
Spoiler:
Pretty useless warlord trait, and I literally got zero powers I was fishing for. I was looking for Veil of Time, and got nothing with 6 rolls. Great.
Deployment/Turn 1:
Spoiler:
It only took 1 round for me to get forgetful with my camera, so I forgot to take a pic until I started my turn. I won the roll for deployment/first turn, and null deployed, deep-striking everything. Despite it being kill points, I still combat squadded everything. I attached Draigo to the 5-man Pallie unit, and a Libby with each of the 5-man Termie squads from the NSF. He castled up, anticipating an Alpha Strike. Some Ruststalkers, the Knight, his Culexus, and the Dunecrawler were the only things in his DZ, in the ruins. He infiltrated His Sicarans into a forest near mid-board. His warlord and the Kataphrons were in a pod, and some Plasma-toting Skitarii were in another pod; the third had another unit of Plasma-toting Skitarii with the Techmarine. After he deployed so defensively, I gave him first turn. He was not expecting that, and it threw his gameplan off big time. He dropped his Kataphrons into the forest with the Sicarans, and the Skitarii got out and ran into ruins near the middle. He used the Canticle for Stealth/Shrouded, effectively giving his hard hitting units a 2+ cover save. Draigo came in, and dropped near the Kataphrons.
One of my 2-Psycannon combat squads with the Libby came in and scattered away from the Kataphrons as well. I needed to put some hurt on them immediately, or this was going to be a quick game.
My 3-man Pallie unit dropped in near the Skitarii, but scattered away quite a bit. My other 5-man termie unit apparently was delayed at the teleport pad.
In the psychic phase, I activated Force on the Libby unit in preparation for a charge from the Sicarans. I failed Might of Heroes, and Fury of Ancients. Draigo attempted to Purge Soul on the Kataphrons, but he denied it with his limited pool of charges. However, shooting from the Psycannons and Stormbolters was incredibly effective. I killed all of his Kataphrons, despite the 2+ cover save. Only the bossman stood, with full wounds, at the end of my turn. I wiped my forehead at this point and said to myself that this might actually be somewhat of a game now, lol. The 3-man Pallie unit shot the Skitarii, maybe killed 1, but probably not.
Top of 2
Spoiler:
He immediately got on the scoreboard, scoring the Divide and Conquer for 4 points. 1 unit of Scouts came on, outflanking to go after the other D&C Objective. He moved his super-speedy Culexus up to the forest, just barely within range of one of my Terminators from the Libby's unit, shutting off Force. The Dunestrider zorched a terminator with his Lascannon, and the Sicarans shot their trillion shot uzis at the Termies as well. He killed the one Terminator that was in range of the Culexus, and we actually had a bit of a rules debate here. I believed that once a unit is no longer in the Culexus' bubble, any powers that had been activated while outside it functioned again; he believed it was gone for good. I just conceded and we played on, curious what others think on that? His Sicarans did serious work, dropping my initiative and weapon skill, killing most of the squad. the Knight shot his battle cannon at Draigo, doing jack squat. HIs other Kataphrons moved up, allowing his warlord to join him; they too shot Draigo's unit, doing nothing. In crazier news, his Skitarii loaded up with Plasma fired into the 3 man Pallie squad, who made something like 7 5+ invul or 5+ FNP, doing ZERO wounds to them! Ridiculous!
His other pod full of Plasma shows up, and he unexpectedly goes after Draigo's crew by dropping in behind them. i had anticipated him going for an Objective. He kills a Pallie and a half, again thanks to decent 5++/FNP rolls. He got a precision shot in, I believe, against my Apothecary and put a wound on him.
Bottom of 2
Spoiler:
Again, I had forgotten to take pics, getting too much into the game. My pic didn't show it, but my 3-man Pallies had run toward the other D&C objective after shooting turn 1, and were in range to claim it turn 2 for my 4 points. In movement, they just got closer this turn. I believe all my other reserves came in this turn, maybe 1 didn't; not sure. I was attempting to drop them in near the Skitarii in the ruins, again wanting to take out that Plasma; however, both scattered away, and both to my left. The Pallies shot at his scouts, killing a few maybe. My Librarian locked in combat with the Infiltrators cast Force and Might of Heroes, to make sure he didn't get punked by the robo squad again. Draigo's unit cast Hammerhand, preparing to take out the pesky Plasma gunners who just shot them in the back. The Libby, now with extra attacks, strength, and initiative, combined with Force, smashed his way through the Infiltrators, leaving only 1, who ran away, I presumed for good. Draigo and the Paladins indeed utterly destroyed the Skitarii in combat, and consolidated back toward the right, so I could maintain a foothold on that flank. My newly arrived Terminators unloaded on the Plasma Skitarii in the ruins, killing all but about 2.
Top of 3
Spoiler:
His second squad of scouts arrive, and move on to reinforce the first group. Their shooting, and that from the first unit, would do nothing to my Paladins. He wisely chose the Canticle to make everyone fearless, which immediately stopped his remaining Sicaran from running away, denying me a potential kill point that I had already mentally tallied as in the bucket.
The Knight moved up, but was cautious; S10 Thunderhammers, and possibly Draigo, are nothing he wanted any part of. He shot his battle cannon to little effect against my Terminator armor. The pesky Plasma gunners, however, killed about half my squad of Terminators with the attached Librarian. I believe the other Kataphron unit again shot to no avail at Draigo's unit, failing to get past the 2+/FNP.
Bottom of 3
Spoiler:
My Libby and his remaining Psycannon gunner move back, away from the Culexus. The Libby shot both Emperor's Wrath and Fury of Ancients at the remaining Sicaran, who managed to live! Draigo then cast Purge Soul at him, and he still lived! Draigo's Paladins then cast Hammerhand, in anticipation of destroying the Drop Pod for another kill point. I was forced to shoot my Psycannon at the Dunestrider, luckily wrecking it; however that meant the Libby and Terminator were left exposed the following turn.
The other unit with the Librarian charge into the drop pod near the Knight, but actually fail to kill it, even with S10 Thunderhammer. Whiff. Draigo and his crew, however, explode the other drop pod. My 5-man Terminator unit shot one of the unit of scouts off the board with their AP4 Psycannons, and the 3-man Paladin unit assaulted the other scouts and killed all but 1, who broke and ran. They consolidated back toward the objective.
Top of 4
Spoiler:
His Knight charges into my Paladins, and thanks to their WS5, he only hits once, killing 1 Paladin. Stomps do nothing. I try to flee with "Our Weapons are Useless", but he catches me and we stay locked.
His Kataphrons shoot at my Terminators who had failed to kill the drop pod, killing 1 or 2. However, in combat the Hammer finally comes through and wrecks the pod. The Culexus charged up his gun, stealing from the Paladins and Draigo, but Draigo tanked all the shots. Someone shot my Psycannon-wielding Terminator that was hanging with the Libby, earning his first kill point.
Bottom of 4
Spoiler:
I had a bit of a tactical conundrum here. I had been lucky with his Knight wiffing last turn, but I couldn't bank on it happening again. Should I attempt to bail the Paladins out by charging in with a few other Terminator squads, or just leave them to fend for themselves and hope they hold the line? I opted to attempt to bail them out, and activated Hammerhand on 2 units of Terminators, but failed to activate it for the Paladins already stuck in combat. I eventually fail my charge into the Knight, due to difficult terrain. However, he again rolls like absolute garbage, and maybe kills one more Paladin, leaving only the Apothecary; he either held morale or the Knight again caught him to hold him in combat.
I hid my Libby to hide the Kill point, and decided to get ballsy with big Papa Draigo. I Gated over to the D&C Objective on my right, right next to the Culexus. I wanted to shoot down that last Sicaran that had gotten away, and did so. I was banking on Draigo's studliness to take out the Culexus, who I knew was going to charge in next turn. My opponent thought I was pretty stupid for doing so, but I had faith in the old warp-dust snorting fanatic.
Top of 5
Spoiler:
The Culexus indeed does what he does, first peppering me with Mind Bullets using my own warp charges, then chucking a Psyk-Out grenade, killing a Paladin or 2. I think his Kataphrons had gotten in on the shooting gallery as well. However, Draigo managed a wound back to the Culexus. I believe his Infiltrators had charged into my Librarian's unit midboard, and had paid the price, being wiped out to a man thanks to Force. His Knight maybe put a wound on the Apothecary, who made his Invul save! Again, nothing damaging from Stomps. So stupidly lucky....
Bottom of 5
Spoiler:
I opt not to charge in this time, continuing to rack up points thanks to my Obsec Terminators.
Draigo puts another wound on the Culexus, and takes one in return. I do remember that despite needing to hit on 5's, I actually put a bunch of wounds on that Culexus over the rounds of combat, and he made a lot of 4++ saves. Sneaky psychic assassins...
I don't believe we went on to round 6, due to time. We had gone back and forth with the Divide and Conquer objectives all game, and were actually tied at the end of the game. However, I had killed 9 of his units, for 18 points! In return, he had only wiped out a single Terminator squad, for 2 points. I had First Blood as well, for a full 30 points with the differential scoring. ANOTHER CRUSHING VICTORY FOR THE GREY KNIGHTS!!
Glad you liked it, hopefully i can get game 3 up soon.

Nope, my buddy just messaged me today about that. Adepticon's list building restrictions specifically restrict self-allying and I missed it. I'm a big fat cheater! Luckily, my points and force org would have been fine if I just went straight NSF, so my attempt at getting Obsec into my list was the only thing really jacked up. Still, totally my bad.

The last mission is Meat Grinder and Crusade, and I'm playing against Flesh Tearers with an Ultramarines Librarius Conclave! Psyker versus Psyker! Hammer and anvil deployment.
His list:
Spoiler:
HQ 1- Mephiston
1- Priest: jump pack
ELITES
10- Death Company: 1 powerfist, 1 power sword
10- Sanguinary Guard: Banner, 5 axes, 3 swords, 2 powerfists
TROOPS
5- Scouts
FAST ATTACK
5- Assault Marines: drop pod
3- Bikers: 2 Grav guns, 1 combi-grav
3- Bikers: 2 Grav guns, 1 combi-grav
LORD OF WAR 1- Commander Dante
LIBRARIUS CONCLAVE
1- Tigurius
1- Librarian: bike, lvl 2, axe
1- Librarian: bike, lvl 2, stave
Powers:
Spoiler:
He got Electrodisplacement, Invis, Null Zone, Electroshield, Might of Heroes, and some others for his Conclave, and Iron Arm for Mephiston. I forgot to take pics or write his down.
Here is mine:
Once again, I fish for Veil of time, and do not get it. WTF??
Deployment
Spoiler:
Once again, my camera skills are lacking and I forgot to take pics. He won the roll to deploy first, and lined everything up. He made a death star with his Sanguinary Guard, Mephiston, Priest, Tiggy, and Dante. A Libby was in each bike squad. I null deployed, and deep struck everything, with a Libby in each of my Combat Squadded Terminator squads. I was worried he was going to infiltrate his scouts and just Electrodisplace them into whatever unit I deployed on the board, so I was sort of forced unless I wanted Sanguinary Guard chopping me up turn 1.
Top of 1
Spoiler:
He gave me first turn, wanting to see what came in. Unfortunately for me, I failed all my reserve rolls and LOST THE GAME TURN 1. Lol, them's the breaks when you play the null deploy game. My opponent was super nice and wanted me to just re-roll and not count it, but I refused. A loss is a loss. I notified the TO, and then we decided to play anyway for fun. I rolled again, and I still only got 2 units in! On top of that, they weren't what I wanted in, so I got frustrated and deployed them extremely stupidly, hoping for first blood on a bike unit, or at least force them to jink. Even that terrible tactical plan failed, as he denied my Emperor's Wrath spell, and I failed Psychic Scourge. Now I was sitting in front of his whole army with my butt hanging in the breeze.
Bottom of 1
Spoiler:
I totally forgot pics entirely here. His drop pod came down on my Meat Grinder objective. His grav bikers tore up my Libby and his unit. His Conclave failed Null Zone and Invisibility; weird! Mephiston got Iron Arm up. His Sanguinary Guard tore up my Paladins easily. So for the second time in 1 game, I lost. I rule at 40k. Once again, we just kept rolling dice.
Top of 2
Spoiler:
Reserves arrive. I got Emperor's Wrath and Null Zone on Dante's unit, but the 2+ armor shook off the AP3 blast. Draigo got Hammerhand up, preparing for the charge that would be coming. My terminators near the drop pod shot the assault marines, and they fail morale and fall back. This was actually pretty terrible for me, and I knew I was in trouble once this happened. They had been too far away and out of line of sight to move and be Electrodisplaced next turn until this happened. He would have been forced to swap out with Death Company, or simply charge in with Death Company to Draigo's unit; now he would be able to get both in potentially. The rest of my shooting was effective enough, wiping out the Grav bikers.
Bottom of 2
Spoiler:
OK, so here we realize how badly we had misread the mission. We had misplaced the Meat Grinder objectives. So we just decided it was early enough on that we just moved them. His drop pod had landed spot on the objective where it had been, so we just moved it over to where he would have dropped it anyway. As I feared, he moved up the Sanguinary Guard and Electrodisplaced the Assault Marines. He then got Invisibility on Death Company, I denied Null Zone, and Mephiston again got Iron Arm up. He charged both Sanguinary Guard and Death Company into Draigo and crew. Only Draigo lived, I believe with 1 wound remaining. Brutal.
Top of 3
Spoiler:
The only thing left was to try to start taking out some Sanguinary Guard. I had nowhere to run thanks to Electrodisplacement. I had to make a stand, or be run down like dogs. Draigo Gated out of combat, but then mishapped back into reserves! Unfortunately, my opponent was making either his 2+ armor or his FNP like a champ! I think I managed to kill one of his Librarians, and MAYBE 1 Sanguinary Guard. Pathetic.
Bottom of 3
Spoiler:
Dante split off to take out a few Terminators on his own. Mephiston and Death Company went after another squad. The Sanguinary Guard jumped off after another squad. He cast Invis on Dante, Electroshield on Tiggy, Might of Heroes on Tiggy, and Iron Arm on Mephiston. Mephiston spanked the squad pretty much by himself. The Sanguinary Guard crushed the Terminators by the drop pod.
Dante took out a squad by himself. The Flesh Tearers were terribly efficient in their murder of the Grey Knights!!
Top of 4
Spoiler:
Draigo, the last man standing, dropped in near an objective, hoping to stay the hell away from the Sanguinary Guard. He tried Purge Soul, but was denied thanks to the Psychic Hood of Tiggy. Shooting against the Assault Marines was ineffective, so i sat there.
Bottom of 4
Spoiler:
As I feared, he moved his Sanguinary Guard up, Dante joined them, and he Electrodisplaced the Assault Marines, and then charged in. Dante alone killed Draigo before he could even strike.
CRUSHING VICTORY (for the third time in 1 game) FOR THE FLESH TEARERS!!
