Hello,
Really hate starting a thread just to ask a question but maybe others want to know as well. I've read on the interwebs that in book 6, the new RoW allows GV's to run as troops, but what's the point if they don't score?
Also how effective is DPing them if they're just gonna get shot to hell the turn they land vs screening them w/ troops footing it up the board?

Just a head up, still waiting on AoD red book in the mail, and don't have book 6. Sry but just really want to know before ordering models.

This isn't exactly the same scenario, but in 40k and 30k, I've always enjoyed the tactic of deep striking or drop podding several strong units into the enemy deployment zone to make them panic. Although I'd admit the Gal Vorak would not be the unit I'd chose to do this. The RoW you're talking about, the last of the serrated sun, is awesome against militia, but against SM is a bit harder.
However, I entirely agree with you about the non-scoring factor, that is very odd to me.

There's no turning back... Triumph or oblivion.

There's no such strategy as "screening them w/ troops".

Unless those "troops" are vehicles which block LoS, there's no benefit.

Also, tactically this RoW is a bad idea, as without enough scoring units, you can't win 30k games.

Also also, the RoW is illegal. It requires Drop Pods but disallows Immobile units.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Drop Pods aren't immobile. They suffer an immobilized result that doesn't do a hull point worth of damage when they land. A recent FAQ stated this explicitly (also dreadclaws stay zoomy). Only things like taratulas are immobile for the purpose of that RoW.

Yep you can take drop pod without any specific restrictions.

I'd say you only use dreadclaws for your Gal Vorbak (2/3 squads) in order to charge the turn you get out of the pod and take like 2 squads of marines in legion drop pod for the second wave.

To add some punch maybe some termies with your HQ inside and assault ram and to ensure that you have no issue with you reserve rolls one command rhino or one proteus. You should be around 2000 pts with all of this stuff I think (including HQ) which let you some spare points to add somme more fire power with rapiers/medusa/typhon.

Prettyy starightforward but very mobile and with a very decent long range firepower.

I think this list can be very powerfull but you have to make very good use of your gal vorbak cause they will only be 5 in the pods which is not that impressive.

And you can stack the pinning test by landing all your pods in the same landing zone to prevent ripost from your opponent against your troops which are not locked in mele.

Remember that they cause pinning tests when disembarking, which is nice.

Also, if it's pods, not dreadclaws, you can be a lot cockier with your deep striking because inertial guidance will protect you from mishaps, and a pod is a big AV12 block of armour which might protect you from some incoming fire.

With cc units like Gal Vorbak better have dreadclaw than Drop pod to get into mele as soon as possible. Drop pods are more effective for shooting units I think like marines or seeker or even termies with combies.

It still takes you a turn after you arrive, though - a dreadclaw lands a short distance away, then next turn you can move up, disembark, and charge. A pod you disembark the turn you land but can't charge. It depends if you think they're safer in the pod than on the board, I guess.

Yeah but a dredclaws protect the Gal Vorbak one more turn is they miss their target. For a CC units it may be better depending on the game. Also, you can have a mix of both drop pod and dread claw.

I take the rites of war for fun, not the prospect of winning. I do a minimal Vorbak squad and a big squad in a Kharybdis. Just looks cool to plop it down and then pour out the crazy dudes

Legion Drop Pods have the Immobile special rule. You don't get more Immobile than that.

shush. you know what they intended, and are being ornery for the sake of being ornery

I don't know what they intended.

By the way they wrote the rules, I assume they intended you to only use Dreadclaws or Kharybdises, both of which are not Immobile.

They're not immobile until they land.

The rules don't agree with you, but you can play by whatever house rules you feel are appropriate.

The rules agree with him fine.

Some rites block Immobile units (this is the same language used as when they talk about Infantry units, or Jump Infantry units, etc.), and other rites that block "units with the Immobile special rule". Drop pods do not fit the former category, but do fit the latter.

"Immobile" is a sub-type of artillery, identified as such both in the general Legion rules and in the army list entry. Drop pods are regular vehicles that count as moving during the first turn of the game, and then become immobilized as a state of play from a special rule "Immobile".

When a Rite of War blocks Immobile units, you can't take artillery. When the Rite of War blocks any unit with with the Immobile rule, you can't take artillery or drop pods.

Anyway, the Rite is actually extremely potent, in that it basically gives you all of the benefits of Orbital Assault (minus teleporting terminators), with none of the drawbacks, and removes the tactical troop tax. You still need scoring, but you get it from actually lethal options like Veterans, Terminators and Tactical Support Squads. Take two Gal Vorbak in dreadclaws as your melee component, and then just start loading up on the same guns every other Legion uses. You will do well.

I'm running four squads of five in pods and one squad of ten in the kyhbardis. Ashen Circle for some mobile support too.

You are running 5 units of Gal Vorbak? Really? I find that hard to believe.

Anyway, you can't take a unit of 10 because they all need to take either a drop pod or a dreadclaw.

Small squads of Gal Vorbak in a good spot can be a real pain in the ass.

You need to put some firepower to take them down and you can't ignore them.
