Death-Dealing Ultramarine Devastator

MANCHESTER

Morning everyone,
I'm going down to my local store later to play a small beginners game.
Limit of 3 units and playing Ultramarines I have with me;
8 Tactical Marines (Sgt with p.sword & Bolter)
(one flamer)
Librarian (play him as ml1)
5 sniper scouts
5 terminators (one Assault cannon, Sgt with p.sword)
Plan for the night, being my first game in I think 12 years is to stick the Librarian in with the Tactical Marines to buff them and use them and the scouts as a Base of fire (the scouts hopefully getting some pinning) while the termies go hunt the enemy.
I think with the doctrines as Ultramarines I will be pretty tough to match at such a small scale. Just wondered if anyone had any pointers for me to bear in mind?
Thanks.

I would suggest the following.

Does the Librarian count as a unit himself or is he a 'freebie'?

Run the Librarian as ML:2, so you have more options to cast a power. It's a 25 point upgrade and a Librarian is already pretty cheap to begin with.

Run the tactical marines and have them advance up and hold one objective, infiltrate the scouts over in terrain, close enough to go and grab/hold another objective and provide suppression fire from range. Also give the scouts camo cloaks so they get a nice +1 bonus to cover saves in terrain, where they should be deployed.

Lastly, put your Librarian in with the Terminators. They'll soak a lot more fire with the 2+ save and buffing them with the Librarian, especially if you get the new re-roll all failed saves power from the new Space Marine only Psychic powers (Forget which one it is, I think Librarius Discipline?) would really make these guys hard to shift.

Advance forward toward enemy with terminators and librarian and crush things in melee after hosing them down with bolter and assault cannon fire.

Are you playing on a 4x4 board? If not, be sure to keep your units able to support each other.

Best of luck and welcome back to the game.

Take it easy.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

Essentially the way the rules were explained to me you can take a single HQ character on the condition that he is taken as part of a unit and cannot leave that unit to act individually or to join another unit.
I thought by taking the Librarian it'd help be in getting used to the psychic phase since that wasnt around in 3Rd edition (as we're quite a few things from reading the new rules and codex).
Think the idea of sticking him with the termies is a good one, only thought the Tac Marines might need him more.
Mulling it over I think your idea is probably better. In being more aggressive I will be able to gauge each units capabilities better..
Thanks

I'd say don't agonise over tactics for your first game in ages - just go and meet some like-minded people and have fun...

This.

Go, have fun, knock the rust off your wargaming skills.

That said...

One thing to keep an eye on is the victory conditions. 40k is mostly an objective based game these days. Killing guys is a means to an end most of the time (although there are kill point missions still) Camp your scouts on an objective, and move the rest of your force out to claim more then your opponent.

While it might be exciting to do the last turn charge into the enemy, sometimes it’s more tactically sound to walk over and put your boot on the prize. I’ve seen a good number of games won or lost because people lost sight of what constitutes a win.

YMMV. Often it’s a lot more fun to loose with style, then win on a technicality.

You might want to deep strike those terminators, as all your units are slow... Easy way to score linebreaker, or go after that backfield unit or objective.

To be honest terminators are a bit too expensive for what they do. Bikes, otoh, are pretty golden...

Crispy78 - How'd you get on?

Sorry for the delay in responding, been a little busy at work, to be fair I took some advice from the responses and just went to have fun primarily.
Ended up facing up against a mini tyranid force. A mob of genestealers and termagaunts each and a carnifex... Thankful now I took the librarian to help counter the psychic stuff he was throwing about. Managed to deny a power that would have pinned my tac marines at a critical point.
Sat my scouts at the rear objective and got my tacs on the midfield one asap and let him come to me. got a rapid fire and flamer shot off before he assaulted me on the objective with the genestealers and then managed to get a few wounds on overwatch. got mauled in cc and pushed off the objective (lost my leadership test) but next turn... tactic worked beautifully in having my tac squad run first turn my termies were only 6" behind and counter attacked the genestealers. In the end even though it decended into a mass of bodies in the middle of the park and I lost half the tac squad and 4 terminators he had a lot more unsaved wounds than me so I'd call it a win.
Also couldn't contain my laughter when the carnifex only managed to inflict one wound all game...
