So Ive been seeing a lot of threads recently about melta and it got me wondering, which is better to equip my new terminators with, I have recently been playing games with melta but still not sure if they are worth it or not (my termies keep getting into combat b4 they can get any shots off) would like to hear peoples stories of what is better and why

I would personally only use melta as a deep striking suicide tool, to take out vehicles. I find that terminators are a distraction unit not used this way

I pump my termies with FNP and put 6 in a unit with chaos lord (not as my warlord) and using the crimson slaughter formation they reroll all to hit rolls with their melta

Your terminators are getting into combat too fast?....first world problems right there XD Though in that case you might want to consider plasma since they rapid fire at close range. They're still strong enough to take out quite a few vehicles, especially with the extra shots and range.

Not sure how you're managing to get into combat without getting an opportunity to shoot, let alone repeteatly, but if that 's the case, you may as well roll with the basic combi bolter. Assuming you can do something better with the extra points (I doubt it).

Well... I have fielded them twice, one time I underestimated the terminators that deepstriked next to me so I didn't use my melta shots thinking they would survive the combat with my CHAOS LORD and 5 terminators with feel no pain (*spoilers* they didn't -__-) the other time they got butt slammed by a mauler-fiend and the FNP did them no good there, so all in all I've been poor in tactics but was wondering in any case if plasma or melta was better.

Melta takes first priority, and then you want half and half Melta/Plasma. So your next squad would be Plasmacide, then the next one Meltacide, etc.

Melta all the way.
Plasma may be better against MCs and other TeQ, but melta ain't useless there, while plasma is useless VS heavy tanks.
Additionaly, most targets you want to hit with plasma are just as threatened by your power weapons, and often are also melee, so your lasting presence is meaningful even if your shots do less.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Terminators are bad. You shouldn't expect them to survive to shoot more then the intial shooting you get off of deep strike.

There's a reason its called Termicide. You're not suppose to waste point trying to support them.

Yeah take them as cheap as possible with only combination melta or plasmas, deep.strike and shoot your target. Anything else after that should be considered a bonus.

Melta is usually the most flexible option unless you know you're probably going to be facing lighter armour or lots of TEQ and the rapid fire plasma with more shots will be better

100% combi meltas... drop in and wreck something or get out of the LR, pop something important and assault what comes out

Melta all the way. Terminators are spendy, enough so that their job is to kill other spendy things. Things like Land Raiders, or units that have multiple wounds (Wulfen, Centurions, Bloodcrushers, etc). So I take Melta... it doubles out the T4 models for the instant-gib, works against the heaviest of armors, and is also an assault weapon so you can use it just before charging in with lightning claws and power fists. Let the weaker units wreck the MSU units. To me, that is what plasma is better suited for.

I'm not sure melta is the best choice anymore. Melta is really poor in the 7th ed meta.

They're only bad if you overinvest. Termies with combi-plazmas or combi-meltas and probably one fist are fine. I prefer plazma cause deepstriking with full scatter doesn't allow you to reliably utilise melta.

So dont overinvest? What size unit would be prefered when deepstriking with meltas in order to take out vehicles? I have 6 terminators in a unit and I field them in a formation with presience so they get rerolls to hit after they deepstrike making their melta more effective

Six is a lot for termicide.
Usually people take three i think.

I sometimes do four, but three is probably the best number. I just like using Terminator models.

Where can we get Terminator combi-weapons from? FW, I presume?

I do almost anything Marine from FW. They got the bitz I want and little of the bling.

Hurts the wallet more than usual for what I typically need. If the Crimson/ Imperial Fist shoulder pads don't get restocked soon though I may have no choice...

I'm more a Marine modeler than a player, though. So I guess it doesn't hurt me as much.

Three or four, depends what you are trying to kill, three shots doesnt always kill a land raider.

How about combiflamer? Anyone do that?

I used the Combi-Flamer once. Not really a fan. Fun with MoK dudes with Mauls, but that's all it is. Fun.
