The Antonov AN-225 weighs 175 tons empty and was carrying cargo of a generator that weighed 117 tons.
The plane has six engines and lots of landing wheels.
Wow! I never knew such a big aircraft had been invented!

Wow, the AN225 is still flying? I would have thought it would have been retired now.
They were supposed to build two, wonder where the second one is.

Probably still refueling somewhere. I can only imagine how much gas it takes to get that sucker airborne.
It’s impressive the feats of engineering we can do when we put our minds to it.

Ah, but how does it compare to the Hughes H-4 Hercules?

Its the biggest airplain ever built, so my guess is that it would company quite well. Beyound that this plane is a marvel to behold when it tales of/lands.

The Spruce Goose has a wider wingspan but shorter fuselage and weighs less and has much less carrying capacity. Not surprising given the technology gap between the two.

By weight its bigger and flew many more times. The 225 flies regular jobs and delivers supersized high value cargo all over the globe.
Its the far more successful giant.

Apparently Donald Trump has bought an option to use the plane next year. If he wins the election he'll fly on it instead of Air Force One, to have enough room for his ego.

They would have to finish building the second one just to be safe.

I've never seen one of these fly, but I have seen the AN-124 once, and the C-5 on a regular basis. Those things were both just amazing to watch take off. You know they can do it, but you just don't quite believe it until you actually see it get off the ground.

What always gets me is, when I'm driving around the outside of JBLM, and I see them (C-5s and C-17s or whatever), it always amazes me how slow they appear to be going on their circling approaches.

Yah, previously, the largest aircraft to visit was the AN-124 for a couple of airshows.
This was dropping off a ginormous generator for some jobby or other (apparently the ONLY aircraft capable of airlifting it the distance). Sure, a ship could probably have done it as well, but I don't think any of our ports have the unloading gear to get it off the boat.

If it could fit on that plane, your ports have the means to load/unload it.

djones520 wrote: If it could fit on that plane, your ports have the means to load/unload it. Whatever. I did add "apparently" as the qualifier as in I neither know nor care. Big Aeroplane lands in big empty. Bigger'n last time. Couldn't land in my state because we've closed down the two AFBs that could handle it in my state anyway. It was a "time sensitive" thing. When they need a Genny out west, they need it "NOW". It was faster to fly it there than ship it (weeks faster).
