Well, now that I've finished going through my trainee state and I'm making a planning for an IG army, some question have come to my mind, and since a lot of you guys have a lot of experience on the subject, I may ask you,

  • Do you have any tips for battles against CSM and Necrons?

  • Are ratlings worth taking?

  • If the Infantry Squad can have the whole squad with special weapons if guardsmen don't choose any other option, how is it that people prefer vets? (Maybe I read the rules wrong, but I think that's what it says the Codex)

  • Which points has to have an army to consider a Baneblade / Imperial Knight worth taking?

  • I know these questions are quite different from each other, but I didn't want to make a topic for each question. Thanks for the feedback, btw

I've only just started my guard army myself, so I haven't had a chance to field my ratlings yet, but I loved the models I got in 2nd edition, and they were awesome back then haha.

As for the infantry squad. A standard infantry squad within a platoon can only take one special weapon. But a platoon can take special weapons squads that are allowed to take three special weapons (I think) Veterans can also take three special weapons, so if you are paying extra to take special weapons, it's better to have them hitting on 3s rather than 4s. That's the way I see it anyway.

I love running squads of 5 ratlings, just as objective sitters and slightly annoying snipers. They're not amazing, but hey, there's legitimately nothing else in the elite slot worth taking.

CSM and Necrons: Blasts will be your friend here. I recommend the Emperor's Wrath Artillery Battery, with a Wyvern, a Basilisk, and a Manticore. That will do you quite good against the tools those two armies will throw at you.

Infantry squads: Limited to one special weapon. Veterans may have three and additionally they are BS4. Hence vet squads.

IK: Bring it in above 1500 points. Baneblade is painfully outdated, and the IK is almost always better. Warden FTW!

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Platoon Command Squads can give all the Guardsmen (i.e. 4) special weapons, which is a good way to run this squad.

One way I like to run them is 3 flamers and a heavy flamer in a Chimera, which I use to fry things that get close to my blob squads. You can go without the Chimera to save points but then the squad is pretty fragile.

Allright, so it seems I certainly misread the rules
Now that I know that the Infantry Squad can only have 1 special weapon... The 3 special weapons and 3s look very attractive right now.

I'll take note, this is going to be fun

Well, thanks for that! A friend of mine really loves those two armies and I needed some advise. When we played IG vs CSM I barely lasted, and I have to thank my victory to my lovely Vanquisher and some meltas I had around.

Well, I guess I'll start thinking about going IK when I have those points, then

Crons - If you're facing normal people, an abundance of chimeras with heavy flamer/heavy bolter combo will go a long way. If you're facing Lychguard in abundance, all you can do is hope for the best with guardsman blobs and a couple of punisher cannons.

vs chaos, if it's conventional chaos, seriously consider a bastion/void shield combo - chaos has to come close to reliably dent heavy armour, which ideally gives you plenty of time to lay on the lascannons

Flying circus/daemon prince will not be a good time for you, the best you can do is minimize targets

I'm very much against ratlings now that company command squads are 1+ and still battleforged - 4x snipers with 2 orders, better leadership, and the option of 4+ save just makes that much more sense, since the sniper rifle isn't actually good.

if you really want a super heavy tank, the baneblade is the worst option - the hellhammer, shadowsword and arguably stormsword are all straight up better, and the stormlord is situationally better

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

Having a lot of Lascannons just never sucks. I like to bury them in blob squads but you get them all over the codex really. Being so so on accuracy, you'll need a fair number but those things drop Reanimation Protocols nicely in most cases. So if Necrons are an issue, that could be a solution. Works great on Chaos suff too. Nurgle is popular so STR 10 means something to IG. I suggest also the Manticore. Manticores do WORK on Necrons.

Ratlings are not worth taking until you get to the END of your army planning...and maybe not even then. but maybe. Line breaking is a thing and having uuuuber cheap units who can do it for you is actualy pretty cool.

Veterans are more accurate and they can take the Demolition Doctrine which is quite good (for now). There is an FAQ coming that potentially puts any thought of Demolition vets being good in doubt. So there's that.

Unless you are playing 2K, i am not a big fan of Baneblades. But when you do get tempted, stop, breathe, and take a StormLord. Thank me later. no need now. True story from Saturday: Final game of the turnament I faced an IG list using a Supr heavy tank. My Tau took it out in one round. Soooo many eggs in sooooo few baskets. he lost 8 Kataphrons right along with it. I'm just not a fan.
