Hi,
I don't know much about Warhammer or anything apart from what my partner has made me read or listen to.
He wants to start his own Tau army but as he lives in Australia at the moment Games Workshop stuff is very expensive.
So I was going to buy him a Tau army,
Except I dont really know what one consists of, I've got him a box of three crisis suits, a commander, a ghostkeel, a riptide and a stormsurge.
He only knows about the crisis suits and commander so I can't wait to see his face when he gets the others.
But what else should I add?
I looked on Ebay and saw kroots and fire warriors listed under Tau, but they dont look like robots so I'm doubtful.
Can someone please give me a list of names of things I need to buy for the best most complete army?
I would be so grateful. thanks in advance.

I don't know much about Warhammer, but my fiance loves it so I'm trying to teach myself, I like painting the models though, I think they come out good.

If you go onto the Games Workshop website it will have list of all the units/models they have for Tau.

Looking at what he has now, he could probably due with Fire Warriors or pathfinders.

You should take a look at the Tau Codex, Kauyon, Mont'ka and Farsight Enclaves books, as also Imperial Armour 3. They show up what's under Tau way of war.

AI & BFG: / BMG: Mr. Freeze, Deathstroke / Battletech: SR, OWA / Fallout Factions: BoS / HGB: Caprice / Malifaux: Arcanists, Guild, Outcasts / MCP: Mutants / SAGA: Ordensstaat / SW Legion: CIS / WWX: Union

Try gamesworkshop.com you can view the complete army list for each army. Also if you haven't already bought one I would recommend the codex. Which contains all the rules and stats for the tau army.

The Tau are the only faction to incorporate other aliens into their Empire. So you'll see the units don't all look alike. If your looking for solid things to get him that will all be good. Kroot (of all types except the shaper), Crisis Teams, Riptides, Broadsides, Firewarriors/Breachers, Ghostkeels, Stormsurge, Tau Commander (only needs one of these maybe two eventually), and Skyrays are all the better models to get from a game perspective and will do well as an army.

I would avoid the Vespid (cool as they are), the Sunshark, and Razorshark at all costs since they are the armies worst units by far.

Edit
Its great to see so many Tau players. Makes me feel proud to also play them.

Get the Start Collecting Tau box and a box of Kroot Carnivores. With what you've got him already, he'll then have more than enough to field a decent army.

Plus, it's going to take him a while to put it all together and paint it (if he's into painting).

Once he's glued it all together, read the codex and maybe played a few games, he can decide what he wants next.

maybe get him some 1x3mm magnets and a drill bit of the same size? the crisis suits, riptides, and stormsurges can be easily modified with magnets so that their weapons can be hot swapped between games.

I would suggest holding off on the kroot or vespids. They have their place, but can use any number of models available in the game. Personally, I use ork shoota boyz for Kroot, with big shootas for shapers. Nothing against kroot personally, but the orks fit better for my imagined background than kroot, and your partner may decide to do the same.
