Subject: Xenos Mercenaries (aside from the Kroot)...?

So every so often you get that Radical Inquisitor, Rogue Trader, ambitious Magos Explorator, etc. who decides to add a Xenos to his routine.
Sometimes these are relationships of rare personal friendship. Sometimes its "fated" (cue the Eldar) that such cooperation should occur to defend the galaxy.
And sometimes its just hiring a bunch of knuckleheads to go kill some Tyranids....or Chaos Marines....or Dark Eldar....
Although the Imperium tends to have a negative view on Xenos in general, there are occasions when due to an oncoming fierce struggle those in high places my simply look the other way at such cooperation so long as no one is shaking hands/claws with a Xenos Horrificus...
So.... aside from the Kroot... are there any other Xenos species that are hired by humans to go out and fight if the going gets tough?
Only thing that comes to mind is maybe Ork Freebooterz....

Oh forgot about them!
Err... what does a person pay them for their services though?
Kroot are after the right to devour their enemies.
Freebooterz......well....on one occasion a simple Inquisitor's Hat sufficed...
But what will satisfy a Corsair?

I imagine it depends on the Corsair group. Could be shelter, slaves, drugs or they just look forward to betraying you.

But if you want something other than one model of a lumpy headed guy named Vaal with no fluff from the Rogue Trader era...
The Fra'al are a piratical race that trade weapons to humans on the black market and information about them is suppressed by the Ordo Xenos. Whether they actually will fight for or on the side of humans hasn't been clarified. They're apparently highly psychic, but no physical description currently exists. There is a picture of ship model, which has a bit of an "Imperium ship meets MC Escher" vibe:
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Fra%27al
Whether the Hrud or the Xenarch work with humans has never been clarified. They both have weapons available on the black market in the Dark Heresy and Inquisitor games, and members of the GW White Dwarf team converted Hrud models out of Skaven and put them in radical Ordo Xenos Inquisitor retinues. Maybe not solid canon, but certainly interesting, and considering how much fluff got its start as something cooked up for White Dwarf...

Orks have been known to be bought over as mercenaries. Look at DoW2 Retribution. The ork campaign has a inquisitor trying to hire a warboss.
Blood Axe's, as mentioned above, have also had a history of working with the IoM. It is one of the reasons that other ork clans look down on them.

" Ask not the Eldar a question, for they will give you 3 different answers. All of which are true and horrific to know" Harlequins are sort-of an example. Not as mercenaries per se, but they allow Inquisitors and certain other Mon-Keigh into the Black Library from time to time. These Human representatives are always heavily supervised while visiting, lest they read some forbidden knowledge or open the wrong door. --

Good catch with The Asharians. Yeah yeah i know, its good old Rogue Trader but still if it hasn't been countermanded.....

I'm uncertain about the Fra'al ever since they first popped up in Battlefleet Gothic. GW has had a habit of seeding a lot of these Xenos Empires out in the depths of space like the Fra'al or the Xenarch Empire, or the Draxian hegemony, etc... and then just not providing much if any information about them. The only tidbit we get is that they have been nipping at the Imperium or another one of the main faction's territories like the Tau or the Eldar...
Ah i would think the Hrud would have to be out - they've been labelled as Xenos Horrificus...
Then again.. Radical inquisitors do "work" with Enslaved Daemons...

You can trade with the hurud in Rogue Trader ( the RPG) but you can't really hire them to do a job for you. They are more the unreliable trader / slaver type then the mercenary type.in that game.
Zoats are mercenaries at least lexicanum thinks so. But their sources are lacking in that article

Thanks for the info!
Maybe a better question would be "Do Zoats actually even exist anymore?"
I mean they are part of the history of 40K still, unlike the Squats who got Editor-Nuked from Existence.
But i wonder if any Zoats are said to have survived after the whole Hive Fleet Colossus business....

Didn't see anyone mentioning the Jokaerro yet. Not really mercenaries but will invent for pay I guess.
Question. In the current necron fluff, where the necrons have more personalities and such, would it be possible for a necron to sell himeslf as a mercenary? In the old fluff It'd be unheard of.

There are a few mentioned in Dan Abnett Eisenhorn and Ravenor books.
Cant think of the specific names off the top of my head but a few are mentioned in the various "fringe" areas of space.
Also worth remembering that in older fluff humans were mercenaries for other species too. I can rememeber in the early days some art work showing Imperial Guard working for the orks!
Do abhumans count as Xenos?? Orgyrns, Ratlings?

Well we can always just point to the Universe and say there are lots of species out there...
I'm more interested in the things that have already been written about - beings who have already made contact with the Imperium.
Thus far, the only things that have been stated for certain that have been hired out by humanity as Mercenaries:
1.) The Asharians (of which only 1 example exists)
2.) The Zoats (assuming they survived into 6th edition)
3.) Ork Freebooterz / Blood Axes
4.) Eldar Corsairs*** ***(Or are they just using you)
Ogryn, Ratlings, Squats (when they still existed) were in previous editions considered part of humanity (just a different strain).
I think someone suggested the Vespids because I mentioned the Kroot, although I haven't seen any fluff/lore that suggests they lend themselves out as mercenaries.
Jokaero don't really count - they are more inventors.
And that's pretty much it.

The Galg, apparently. Easy to overlook because they usually work for the Tau, so they tend to get lumped in with Tau races, but they're actually mercenaries.
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Galg
Their physical description sounds a bit like the old space Slann. They hate the Imperium, so they probably wouldn't work for an Imperial commander.

Unlikely seeing that practically every Necron with sentience seems to look down upon the "inferior" races of the galaxy. BUUUTTTTT... Ward did have the Necrons ally with the blood angels to fight the kids (or at least set the precedence for it which spawned that horrid image of a necron and a blood angel brofisting) and had a Necron Overlord who was actually able to swallow his own pride in the face of potential annihilation and give weapons such as doomsday arms to orks to avoid gettin' krumped... which resulted in the orks getting themselves vaporized.
But I can't see a necron selling his or her services to anyone not Necron. Whoever would be looking to hire necrons would have to have something extremely valuable, like the key to reversing the biotransference or cutting the warp off from the universe or something like that.

It is important to notice that Humanity =/= Just the Imperium
There is a plethora of non imperium human actions or rogue traders who act outside the boundaries and laws of the imperium. These are the ones usually employing xenos mercenaries. Races who hate the imperium might still be for hire by humans outside of it.
Public usage of Xenos mercenaries inside the imperium is something else entirely. Read non-existent.
GrapeApe wrote:

Kroot are the xenos mercenary for hire in the rogue trader ( RPG) game. And the old kroot merchary codex also suggested them to be for hire by humans.
Dark eldar pirates are also for hire by humans there is a ton of fluff about that. It is just extremely risky to use them.
Do we also include races who sell augmented combat brutes / slaves to humans as mercenaries ? Since if we do then the list becomes even bigger.
