So yeah, I've seen some list examples inwhich a Legacy of Ruin was bought for a Renegade Knight.

However, I haven't seen any mention for the Legacies being able to be bought for a Renegade Knight anywhere. Not in the Renegade Knights own rules, not in IA13, not in the rulebook nor in the CSM Codex.

Where exactly does it say that this is doable, if it is?

To me it seems straight up illegal ruleswise.

It's illegal on a renegade knight. But what you are probably seeing is a chaos knight (which is different) which can take legacies when taken as a csm low

I've seen it on an actual Renegade Knight in army lists, but perhaps it's the creators of these lists then that have the different types of Knights mixed up (or just not understanding that they are 2 different things.)

Thanks for the validation, because I was kinda scratching my head here on how some suppose it's possible to do when it's not indicated anywhere.

Yep, they're mixed up. Chaos Knights are taken as faction Chaos Marines or faction Chaos Daemons. If taken as Chaos Marines allows for Legacies to be applied.

Renegade Knights literally have their own faction, Renegade Knights, which shares it's allies matrix with CSM. There are no Legacies available for this faction.

Hope that clarifies.
