The question is in the title. For more background, I've been looking to split the renegade box with a buddy and I've been pondering knight loadouts. It will mainly be a part of a melee csm list as a renegade. As I said, it's a Melee list so I thought bringing double shooting weapons could make up for lack of firepower, but then I'd miss out on that sweet looking d chainsword. So, to people who have played knights on the table before, does the chainsword actually make a difference? I know it's str d, bit only ws 4 so I could easily wiff it. And even without it I've got str 10 ap 2 attacks and stomp. I was thinking either avenger and rapid fire battle cannon or avenger and reaper chainsword depending on what decision I make. And yes, I know magnets exist but this is for a standard all comers load out I'll be using 99 percent of the time.

Thanks in advance guys.

It really doesnt matter as 2 lascannons or melta guns can remove 6hp if they 6s X 6s. A Str D from a wraith knight or guard can pop it's big D and insta gib your 400pt knight. Heck people can haywire it and glance 6 hp off it really easy for 1/4 the price.

If you are going to use the Knight to fight other big things, you want a D Weapon. If you are using it to take on bunches of little things, take the extra ranged weapon.

Depends on your meta, really.

if you have the renegade knight, go full dakka and bring dual avenger gatling cannons or dual rapid-fire Battle Cannons. Both options cost the same and basically causes enemy units that are not terminators or land raiders melt. If they charge you, you still have your stomps and the rest of the army to counter-charge him.

I like this idea. Still wish you could "Renegage" and Daemonize " the same Knight.

My meta is mostly space marines (of all the variety) and imperial guard. I imagine the ap 3 could deal with a lot of that. But, I already have the means to kill space marines. I think I'll go with the d weapon because, as you said, at some point I will have to kill other big things and I'd rather TAC than specialize one way. Plus, it'll make a knight assault even deadlier.

Can Knights actually dual wield weapons?

The Gallant has two melee weapons, so yes to duel wielding.

Also, Knight are Str 10, AP2 in melee at their base number of attacks, which means even Dakka Knights are beasts in Assault from HoW through to Stomps.

Yup, this is the one thing they have better than loyalist Imperial Knights in that the Chainsword and the Thunderstrike Gauntlet can be swapped out for any of the ranged arm weapons. Ironically the only weapons you can't dual wield are the melee weapons (although I don't know why you'd ever want to since it grants no bonuses).

EDIT: Changed the last quib because CrownAxe reminded me that Superheavies don't suffer Weapon Destroyed Results.

Super Heavies can't have their weapons destroyed. They don't suffer vehicle damage results

Ahh I see. I have the Renegade set, so I'll have a look at the data sheet for the Renegade Knight. I didn't realise you were able to swap both.

One Haywire nade per assault round.....

On Topic:
I am finding that the "shooty" knights are way outperformed by other platforms, the lack of that chainsworD makes people alot less scared of you. Additionally, who wants a knight exploding in their backfield? Not me! If you need more firepower that is what the melta upgrade or carapace weapons are for.

Going forward I doubt I will use the all shooty variant after trying it out a couple times, it's just not worth the points and a knight SHOULD be in the thick of things, it moves extremely fast, has stomp, Init 4, it's a walker, and that chainsword is devastating against pretty much everything.
