I haven't played 40k since the old days where you used to buy an army book, select models from that army book and then field those models on the table.
I'm vaguely aware that there's been some kind of rush to embrace microtransactions with dozens of mini formation rule sheets online.
But what of these formation rules from these Start Collecting boxes? Is that seriously the only place to acquire the rules sheet or are they bundled in the online shop somewhere?
Have we fallen so far?

You can find out what they are pretty easily. This isn't a new thing.

The only legitimate way to get the start collecting formation rule sheets are in those boxes. They're just a way to let you play straight away with what you get instead of how before you used to have to maybe grab a few more things with a battleforce. That's all they are really, a battleforce with a new name.

What the guy above me said.
Also a bunch of formations and whatnot are only available in White Dwarfs now, which is annoying because sometimes I would be arguing with someone about their army being invalid only to later realize it was a formation from a WD that I never heard of and never read.
Many tables were flipped.
The good thing is sometimes these get reprinted in supplements, like Skyhammer Annhilation force got reprinted in Angels of Death.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Thanks for the super useful replies!
A shame they don't do an annual roundup of these things and put them in a nice hardback.
Ok - good to know that these were only ever available in the starter boxes - I don't want to be caught in a GW store with some shady b&w printout.

Hah - yeah when I saw the 'supposed' Necron one - I thought... "no that can't be real". I can't imagine my reaction in-game if someone pulled it without having the physical paper with them. "Yeah sure buddy - your whole unit just comes back."

My GW store included a copy of the Formation inside of my Ork Codex. I bought the Start Collecting Box a day prior, but it was a nice gesture. This wouldn't help if you bought the book prior to a new box set, but they may be willing to give you a copy of the rules if extras are onhand.

Just look online, I typed in "skitarii start collecting formation" and it was the first result that popped up in google. Nobody is going to shed any tears if you take that offline, it's a 4x6" laminated card that comes in the boxes. If somebody seriously gets annoyed that you photocopied that they've got bigger issues. It isn't like you ripped an entire rulebook. I will say though that if you want the models in the boxes they're excellent value. One of the only things I've bought new from GW in a long time, they're nice boxes for starting a force or just getting a painting project. Most of the formations are very minor as well. For example the Skitarii one basically just gives you preferred enemy if you're within 18" of the dominus
