Hi all,

Just curious as to why I don't see anyone using the dominus maniple ever.

Is the point tax from the tech priest too much? It just seems like it could be a much more durable warlord.

It's going to be primarily down to the need for 2 codices.
Skitarii players generally can't be bothered, nor sensibly want to, blow £30 on a Cult codex, just for that one unit they like from the Cult.

Took me a while to get into Kataphrons and Castellans, so I held off on the Cult codex for quite a while.

Hmm okay. I'm picking up the Start Collecting box this week so I was wondering.

That said, I've been looking at it, and (points wise) I could get 3 plasma calivers for less than a priest...

Only 30£? Please cry me a river when you get on my level and pay $100 (80£) for a fraken 300page novel containing 2 armies only 1 of which I want to play and 45pages of real rules.

I take it you're referring to the Black books?
I check for any open source material from them first; as it happens, the only two units from Retribution I'm interested in (Arlatax and Ferrum) have their rules out in the open, although I have a feeling the Ferrum rules I have are a prototype.

To be honest, the GW codices' price model seems a bit crummy. The Skitarii one costs the same as the Ork one, and the difference in content quantity is vast.
The Skitarii start-collecting box is marvellous, but they should provide a discount on the two AdMech codices with it, given that it's the only box that needs two of the damn things anyway/

I can't help but feel that, due to the terrible lack of interest in the Cult units, this whole shabang is a ploy just to get sales of the Cult book, followed by sales of Cult units because "I've got their codex, might aswell".
They chose a silly way to distinguish the two sub factions, but it's kind've nice having a codex that you make nearly complete use of. (Skitarii)

It's £20, £16 from third party retailers. Buying both 3rd party is still cheaper than either the sm or eldar direct from gw.

I love how there's "a terrible lack of interest in the Cult units"...yet Battle Servitors and Kastelans were sold out for a few weeks at launch.

You can make the argument that it's a ploy to get sales of the Cult book(not necessary, that book was selling pretty well from what I've seen. People like easily allied in Heavy Grav-Cannons on platforms that never lose their full ROF for Salvo), but it's just simply that Cult bring an HQ to the party and Skitarii don't have one.

The Sad thing is, in the two novels Skitarius and Techpriest is a Skitarii-HQ(Stroika). Amongst other stuff, like Lightnings, Skytalons, Archmagos.....
Looking at the novels, the codizes look just stale and lazy. Like nobody cared to make more models, options and unit-entries.

We do actually have a Skitarii pseudo HQ, as we have the ability to take any model as Warlord...which is basically what Stroika was.

Huh, didn't suspect that.
The lack of interest is painfully prevalent at my local; even the Shopkeeps are in agreement.

Not realy. A pair of arc-pistols and arc-mauls? That guy had a very different loadout.

It seems unnecessary seeing as they get BS bonuses just by activating them in the Maniple.

I liked the books that came out, but strokia was a four armed arc spittng cyborg w/ a scyber skull..... would have been neat to make the alpha dominus its own model. And omnid toqoura is a dreadnought with a grav cannon and icarus array. Another model that would have beej cool. I'm doing a conversion of them both but it seems like thise two novels pointed to models that didn't make the codexes

Skitarii battle maniple, and working toward a ad mech holy requisitioner squad and nominus enclave.

I use the dominus maniple a lot and for what it does (adds an HQ and some Twin linking goodness) I can say it's worth it. You only lose out on scout for the dominus maniple's skitarii units but I think it's a good thing, as it forces you to play it more safe with them.

There are two versions of it, one with vanguard and one with rangers. I used the vanguard more and still, they get into range to deal some serious damage most games, plus it helps the dominus survive. It's really nasty to hit someone with a TL Plasma caviler squad or even just a crap ton of arc rifles, and usually the tech priest can lay down an equal amount of hurt. My only problem is the onager that has to be seperate, as I really want to have at least two squads of two each but you can only bring 1 in the formation.

(also, you don't really need the codex if, like me, you managed to pick up the white dwarf with the dominus rules inside. you really just need his rules)

Only things that have kept me from running it are 1) only able to take a single Onager and 2) I need the Tech-Priest more for my Cult Mechanicus forces.
