As I sat here this morning, with my 4year old who never fails to wake me up at 0500 every morning im off, but sleeps in till 0800 for her mother, and I patted the head of my German Shepard, I was over come with emotion. This is not normally the day of the year I get emotional, but every day on the day my buddies died.

If you have a loved one or friend who died, please honor them today.

For Phillip Witkowski who died in Kandahar.

For Matthew Suzuki who died many years later from the wounds of multiple tours.

So that we never forget.

Two years ago, my best friend died. He was murdered.
Daniel Bulavko, I miss you...
And to make 2014 truly a year of disaster, my mother died in the same year. She had a brain tumour, and though the doctors originally said she would have only a few months to live, she thankfully continued to live for many years. Alas the inevitable fate did catch up with her eventually. I really miss you mom, and thanks a lot for taking care of me for all those years even when you were sick.

My grandpa Kenneth. He died a couple years ago. He had a number of health problems. The docs said the Agent Orange did him no favours. Mostly flew missions for the Green Berets and ARVN. Left before right before Ia Drang.
My mother's cousin (who's name I never learned) is written on the black wall in DC.
My great grandfather James. Too young for WWI. Fought in Nicaragua. Too old for WWII so acted as a supply Sergeant. Was training men in Korea when the Chinese crossed over so had to fight. Then was military attache in Ethiopia. Died many years later from a terminal case of being old.
My great grandfather Otto. Shot himself to avoid capture by the Red Army.
My step-great grandfather Josef. Was sick the rest of his life due to lung problems he picked up on the Eastern Front.

The oldest member of my family to come to the US fought in the Revolutionary War. He was a Hessian...they gave him some land in Pennsylvania. John Schraeder.

And to those still with us: My granfather Louis. His friend in the post office let him know his Army draft card showed up, so he volunteered for the Navy before it got to his house. Finished boot camp within weeks of the Japanese surrender. He is technically a WWII veteran, but doesn't consider himself as such. Still kickin'! And Benny and Tbone - saw plenty dead in Iraq but thank God came home.
