Subject: *Breaking* Active shooter holding hostages at Walmart : Amarillo, TX
Hostage situation happening now at local Amarillo Walmart at Georgia and i27. Suspect is former Walmart employee. Stay clear of the area. Officers are on scene and securing the area. SWAT making entry.
Police are searching for a Somalian man wearing Kakhi pants.
A SWAT team shot and killed an armed suspect who took hostages at a Walmart in Amarillo, Texas Tuesday afternoon, investigators confirmed, saying all the hostages are now safe.
Police identified the gunman late Tuesday as 54-year-old Mohammad Moghaddam.
Moghaddam, who was an employee at that Walmart, took two other workers hostage, local media reported. One of the hostages was the store manager, relatives told the Amarillo Globe-News.
"We do consider this a work-place violence situation at this point," the sheriff's office said. City officials first reported an "active shooter incident" at 12:30 p.m. local time.
Police earlier said they were looking for a Somali man wearing khaki pants, KFDA added. Officers reportedly were evacuating shoppers from the west side of the store in the Texas Panhandle.
Jeff Nunn, the president of a nearby bank, told the Globe-News that helicopters and roughly 20 police and emergency vehicles rushed to the store. His bank and a day care center reportedly went on lockdown.
Police closed nearby streets off I-27. "Please avoid the area so that officers can focus on the scene and not traffic," the Amarillo Police Dept. said in a statement

Another startling thing: Amarillo has a SWAT team. Next someone will tell me there's a VW dealership, and my head will explode.
(in case anyone is wondering, Amarillo is in the middle of the Permian Basin, also known by its local name: Salusa Secundus, and gateway to the worst radioactive mutie zones in New Mexico).

I was expecting the possibility of something like this. Sometimes after a mass shooting, and the resulting media hype surrounding it, you get copycats. Disturbed individuals off their rocker, or an aspiring terrorist, might decide that they can one-up the previous event. It's the same deal with serial killers.

oops LA, always confuse those two, and so far they are unclear of his intentions yet, but when you are going to an event have weapons and chemicals it usually does not mean good things, especially since he was not to have those weapons:

Dude had a car full of questionable gak:
Howell had three rifles in the car, [Santa Monica police Detective Derek] Leone wrote, including an Anderson Manufacturing AM-15 .223-caliber rifle loaded with a 30-round detachable magazine with a second 30-round magazine taped to it. He also had a loaded .30-06-caliber bolt-action rifle and a .22-caliber Ruger semi-automatic rifle, according to the detective’s statement. Rounds from either of the first two rifles could have detonated the explosive, Leone said. Howell also had a Taser, handcuffs, a buck knife, a security badge, a black hoodie, more ammunition and a 5-gallon container of gasoline.

I've travelled to my club's range with more guns and ammo than that in my car for an afternoon of recreational target shooting. The gasoline and handcuffs are a bit suspicious yes. The tannerite is commonly used with target shooting but it's still dangerous and isn't allowed at our range but I know plenty of people that use it on private property for recreational shooting. A lot of what he was carrying is illegal in California so he's in a lot of trouble but there are a lot of southern and midwestern states in which you could drive around with all that in your car and not be doing anything illegal or suspicious. You'd probably get a warning about transporting guns while they're loaded but the possession by itself is perfectly fine.

UPDATE 10:10 p.m.: Santa Monica Police have now confirmed that Howell never expressed intent to “harm” the parade. According to reports from the L.A. Times and the N.Y. Daily News, friends of the suspect say Howell is bisexual with a male partner and harbored no ill will towards gay and lesbians.
He gonna get slammed though, because he has a prior gun violation and violated terms of his plea bargain, crossed into CA with items illegal in CA.

Discussions of copycat crimes. I do believe you brought that up...
I think the bigger issue is, why is there a VW dealership in Amarillo. I didn't think cars were permitted there, much less tiny little wussy feren cars. This is the type of country where "Texas Cadillas" is a twin cab double dooley diesel pickup, and they are actually used for their intended purpose and not as yuppie mobiles.
Did I mention if you break down on the roads out there you will die?

I've never used tannerite for target practice and I am at work and don't want to Google its uses lest I become a target for my human resources department. Why the "air quotes" around chemical and explosive? The local news on Sunday was saying that 5 gallons of the stuff would be enough for a pipe bomb or similar explosive. Is that inaccurate?
Also, driving around your local area with the contents of this guy's car might not raise any issues, but driving across country? And driving across country to enter a state where many of those items are illegal? Seems suspicious. Or stupid, but I am going with suspicious.

Tannerite is the brand name of a binary explosive marketed primarily for making exploding targets for firearms practice.[1] It is a patented[2] combination of ammonium nitrate (an oxidizer) and aluminum powder (a fuel) that is supplied as two separate powders that are mixed and shaken to produce an explosive. The combination is relatively stable when subjected to forces less severe than a high-velocity bullet impact, such as a hammer blow, being dropped, or impact from a low-velocity bullet or shotgun blast.[2] It is also not flammable – an explosion cannot be created by a burning fuse or electricity.[3] Because it is sold as two separate powders, it can be transported and sold in many places without the legal restrictions that would otherwise apply to explosives.[4] Other combination explosives are generically referred to as Tannerite
The inert binary nature of the explosive makes it legal and easily purchased in several states. However, if you pack a sizeable amount of the mix into something and shoot it you will get a big explosion. People have maimed themselves and lost limbs messing around with tannerite in a stupid manner.

Tannerite would make a crappy pipe bomb, and unless you also had blasting caps you couldn't even ensure detonation (shooting a pipe likely is not going to be easy and has a big chance of not having the tannerite explode).
I put quotes around 'chemical' and 'explosive' because those are words being used buy the press as if he had a barrel of ANFO or some real explosive, not something you buy to make BOOM targets. You can use black powder (sold many places that sell tannerite) or other gun powder if your goal is to make bombs. Tannerite is not the correct substance.
Automatically Appended Next Post: This is my daughter shooting a product similar to tannerite (same stuff, different brand).
