Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions
|
Im sure this topic belongs here but hopefully im right. So I have been trying to go for a new army for almost 8 months now. The problem is that I keep hopping from one army to another, this is mainly because i dont want to repeat the past by buying a codex that i didnt want and then an army right after and then not like it. I originally had a csm army but then i sold it so i can have enough for this army. I really like my new army not to be one of the more hyper competitve armies, this is because i like to play armies that are kind of obscure. I really hate KDK flesh hound spam, AM, sisters of battle and tyranids. I originally wanted to create a home-brew chapter that could play as all the chapters (and if i try really hard, grey knights). But the problem with that is their theme. I had two ideas for them: 1. arabian themed marines, but i dont know how they would look like 2. roman occupied germania, they are hyper aggressive (which is my favourite play style), their symbol is a bear, but other than that i dont know what the name or fluff could be ( if you could help me with that, it would be nice) I dont want to purchase a codex and 2 troops and stuff like that, mainly because i have enough money to fully buy an army ( around 600 cad plus 25% retail on GW price) and because i want to get back into the hobby quick. Overall, as you can see, this is a major problem for me. Its really starting to effect me, I am constantly searching for my army, but every time i try to commit i find another interesting army, and this is either due to the fact that the army is played a lot in competitve or i hated the fluff of the army that i wanted to commit to. I dont want a hyper competitve list but at least it can win a couple of small tourneys if played right. I like hyper aggressive lists, and psychic heavy lists (optional). I hope you guys didnt get annoyed by my half writing structure and grammar. thank you Dakka Dakka for helping me out

It sounds like fluff is also a factor. Highly aggressive, psyker heavy, at least somewhat competitive - screams Eldar and Grey Knights to me. But I dunno if one or both cause problems for you in fluff.
Personally I adore Eldar, because there's bascially no way to go wrong - any unit you use is going to be at least average, and a psyker heavy eldar list with farseers, warlock councils, warlocks supporting units, and psychic planes is really fun.

Sounds like you are being pulled in a lot of directions. I think that, ultimately, you are looking to express yourself through the game, and that's cool. Home brewed chapters are really good for that, and I think Space Marines are right up your alley. I might even suggest looking into 30k, since that allows for a LOT of customisation for your boys in power armour!
The thing that got me hooked on a Space Marine army that I started using for a while was creating and using my own special characters. They were just the regular HQ choices and sergeants and troops, but I gave little stories to each one. Though my army's colours were black and purple, my Chaplain was bone white, making him very uniquely contrasted. Called him Chaplain Ortano of the Night Hawks, a new chapter created from the Dark Angels in order to appease the Inquisition and to act as the Dark Angels whenever the Inquisition called upon them. Chaplain Ortano, originally a Dark Angel, would oversee the spiritual honour of this new Chapter. There was Cut-Face Man, the Space Marine Scout. Why was his face cut? How did that happen? No idea. But Cut-Face Man was always the second-last to go down if ever I could help it (just before the Sarge). I had little litanies and directives that the chapter would follow. Lots of fun.
When making a themed army, find a few folks that you plan to focus around. If you don't end up liking them, well, chances are you won't like the chapter. Neither the Arabian theme nor the Roman theme strike me as hyper aggressive (Arabian-theme being keeping a distance, and some magical-like weapons wielded by those in charge, and Roman theme being very orderly phanlanxes marching under banners). If the Bear is something you really want, consider how a bear behaves and acts. It's massive, tough, and charges in to start smashing apart enemies (even if it's not very accurate in doing so). Sounds like the Space Wolves might have formed the gene-stock of that chapter. Wolves normally hunt in packs, but Bears are much more solitary. Perhaps their leader is similarly isolated? Small squads whenever possible. Definitely some Centurions and/or Dreadnaughts.
Anyways, good luck!

Thx guys for the help. @kharn i tried doing it but it still didnt work as i have more than two options for a coin and a hell of a lot more for the die lol. @the_scotsman i dont really like the eldar since they are more slick and fast, i usually side with the heavy brutes, so i guess grey knights? i like their fluff but they are not very strong competitively (unless you can prove me otherwise) @yarium im pretty sure both the ideas of germanic and arab theme isnt going to work. But i still dont know what army would be really good to fit the bear theme. maybe wulfen in a landraider spearhead?

I think there was a quote from Frasier to that effect. It was something like "Flip a coin. if you don't like the result, you'll know which choice you preferred."

Grey Knights aren't the craziest thing competitively (they are a bit monobuild focusing primarily on dreadknights and the Nemesis Strike Force) but they are playable in most local metas.
They're solidly mid-tier, better off than the usual suspects of orks/de/guard/csm/etc.

I absolutely agree with the above posts. Choosing an army for fluff is always a good idea. As someone who regularly converts unique models to fit a self-brewed fluff, I can relate. One thing you could do is mix 2 armies, but model them alike. Obviously this works best with Battle Bros, but it doesn't have to. Take this for example: http://glennsgwmodels.blogspot.com/2016/01/eldar-terminators.html Those are my Eldar "Grey Knights". I love Eldar and I love the idea of Wraith-Constructs. I can use the Nemesis Strike force to supplement my main Eldar army. The "Grey Kngihts" As you mentioned, provides "Heavy Brutes" to an otherwise squishy army. They meant to represent Anti-Deamon Wraith-Constructs that protect my Saim-Hann Exiles as they travel the Webway more than other Craftworlders. The fact that they are not BBs is ok, because it represents the apprehension that some of the living Eldar feel while working with psychic wraiths. Gameplay-wise they complement each other well. Aggressive, fast and good Psychic powers. If you can't decide on 1 army to start, find a way to combine 2 that you like in a new an interesting way. --

^ i already tried that, orks would be in power armour for all power armour factions, orks would be in wratih constructs and orks would be heavily armoured to be necrons and orks would be in riptides, but that idea never came into play. I really liked to mix tau and chaos but it ended up to be stale for me, since it was fleshounds spam with a riptide wing. it tried to have an idea of my favourite legion (iron warriors) being forgeworld that way i can play 30 and 40k but i cant find a fluffy formation for them. and i dont really like perturabo. I think @yarium is right and that i am trying to project myself into the game. i always liked the idea of having an army that was lead by a competitively good hq that could be my avatar. I also really want an army that would have one model that would scream " paint me" an example would be a daemon prince. the old model was the model that got me into the game when i was 12, im sixteen now. Automatically Appended Next Post: and my age is also a hard thing for me in this game, because money is hard to find so i need to be really conservative

Then again buying whole lot at once just means you have depressingly long painting queue waiting up...
Anyway with the 7th ed idea of 1 army only is outdated anyway if you don't want to shoot yourself to foot big time. You need 2 or 3 armies. You could possibly combine all your "want to collect" armies into one depending on what armies attract you.

problem is the armies that i want to collect dont mix, and if they do they would be expensive. i.e chaos + imperium i am 50 50 on them and they dont mix. I really like tau and chaos but they would be expensive to mix. i think the best option for me is going with the bear theme and then say that they have an uneasy alliance with some factions such as necrons and eldar. but how would i represent the chapter is whole other problem.

Doesn't sound like there is a solution to your problem. The only suggestion I can make is...who do you really "like" (rules, spam, netlists aside).
Is there an army you genuinely love, lists/gaming aside?
I feel very fortunate that in my time playing 40K (about 10 years, then a long break) I've only ever really enjoyed Eldar. I don't purchase to a list or due to rules/errata/meta etc. I simply like Eldar. I'll eventually have a rather large force and I'll play whatever game I feel like (2nd ed., something different etc.). I've dabbled with Space Marines once and almost immediately sold them off after painting.
It's been a blessing simply liking one army, rules-be-damned and sticking with it.
I don't think there is an easy way to get into this hobby quickly (short of buying pre-painted stuff on ebay). Good luck! Go with whoever you genuinely like. After all, maybe in a short while there will be an 8th edition and all the rules will change.

I think you guys might have convinced me to go with the bear theme for my home-brew chapter. I will probably wait and post another thread on what this army should look like and stuff unless you guys want to continue the discussion here. But who knows maybe i might change my mind lol.
