I recently bought Hobbit: Escape from Goblin Town and I'm in love with battle system and I wonder if it is possible to advance these rules into roleplaying game, like Warhammer became an RPG from a wargame, or Chainmail became OD&D. Do you know some official or unofficial conversions of the system?

Hello! Welcome to the SBG world, I'm DK.

So what do you mean by RPG? Like, DND or do you mean something where there are RPG elements to the game such as leveling up your soldiers?

Below is a project that I helped developed, if that is what you are looking for, it is a RPG-esque unofficial expansion to the game.

I have used the Battle Companies ruleset to also do a "Lord of the Rings: The Third Age" tabletop adaptation, doing the path of the Fellowship with growing non-fellowship characters.

Alright, so you wish to do a full RPG like DnD using the SBG battle-system?

What does that entail exactly? You roll up characters using the SBG stat-line and whenever there is a fight you do it on the tabletop with SBG rules?

Yes, but there should be several important changes:

battles should be less lethal. I would either make evil side armies with less points, or decide that killed units might survive, defeat would only mean unconiousness.

Second, there would have to be advanement system.

Third, there should be skills for things outside of battle.

Four, loot and treasure system. Aquiring mundane and magical items.

I already see one problem - heroes in the game have diffrent point vaules, while we would want all players have equally powerful characters.

Lethality) Yep, check the "Hero Injury Table" of Battle Companies for inspiration.

Advancement System) Yep, check the "Hero Advancement Table" of Battle Companies for inspiration

Outside of battles skills) Sure, easy enough to add. You just have to figure out what determines their skill ablities and how do they get them? Do they have to put gold or whatever into skills? do they roll on a chart? or instead of skills do they simply have to have say.. a lockpick?

Loot and Booty) sure, check out DCHL Battle Companies and the Battle Companies above for wargear and special item acquisition. Special item ideas are under special rules for each faction.

Point values and communist power levels) Advancement system makes eternally-equal-costed-characters a problem unless you always give a flat xp reward.

I cannot recommend cubicle 7's The One Ring enough, it is phenomenal. MERP is pretty good too. I use the minis for those rpgs all the time.

Ooo, that sounds cool. I'll check it out, even though I am still working my way through Edge of the Empire, Eclipse, and DnD.

if you are doing 5th ed dnd, cubicle 7 is making a middle earth open license for it, but because i am super anti 5th ed I would certainly suggest their original, it does tolkein better

Haha, why are you against 5th ed? Because it isn't 4th edition, you WOW-player? (Just kidding, but still wondering)

I will avoid going on a tirade but will leave it with, I think it is the worst edition, and arguably one of the worst rpgs on the market, I firmly believe it should have been so much better than what we got, and it was way over priced for what it turned into.

Certainly as a fan effort it could be done. I don't think GW could do it as their license is for a miniatures game. Also, I believe there is (or was?) a middle earth RPG done by some other company so they may hold that license?

there are at least 3 somewhat available, cubicle 7 has the one ring, which is great and currently supported,. ICE had MERP which is OOP but really great and then decipher had a lord of the rings game more based on the movies, love all 3

BTW. how does "support" ability of goblins work?

Everyone "has a spear but not a spear", so if they want to support another model, they can. Additionally, Goblins with 2-handed weapons can also support AND fight two-handed for the -1/+1 on their die roll.

I have a supplement that ive been working on for several years for RPG style games and character creation. Just slowly redoing the pages in photoshop to make it pretty before I release it through Blackfyre Productions.
