Hi all,
I'm rather confused about how shooting at flyers works. Please correct me on any wrong points.
So flyers have 2 modes, zoom and hover, and if they are zooming and you don't have sky fire you take snapshots. If they are hovering they are treated as jump infantry so if you DON'T have sky fire you can shoot at them normally, but if you do have sky fire then it's a snapshot.
Also if they are grounded... Weapons with sky fire have to now shoot snap shots at them correct? What about in the case of multiple sky fire weapons on one unit, where say the first one grounds it? Do the others have to snap shoot?
This was how an opponent explained it to me a few weeks ago and I just went with it but I was a bit confused. For reference I am playing the latest edition.
Thanks!

First of all you are talking about Flying Mounstrous Creature so please be more specific (because Flyers refers to the vehicle).
Also Skyfire hits both flying units at full BS regardless of what mode they are in. This is because their unit type doesn't change and thats how you determine how Skyfire shoots (so when a FMC is gliding and moveing like a jump unit, it's still a FMC)
Also you takr one grounding check at the end of the shooting phase, not in the middle of a units shooting

First off, there are two types of flyers, Vehicles and creatures. Vehicles can Zoom and Hover, Creatures Swoop and Glide. Hover is treated like a Fast Skimmer. Glide is treated like a Jump Creature. Skyfire Weapons can hit Skimmers fine.
That out of the way to your main question which is for Creatures (Vehicles cannot be Grounded). Grounding Tests are at the end of the Phase, so if you are still Shooting, the Creature has not been Grounded or even seen if it can stay in the sky.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

Christoph, when a FMC glides it moves like jump creature but itsn't treated as one. It still is a FMC while gliding so Skyfire still hits it at full BS.

Glide is a form of movement, not a unit type.

Yeah that's what I said.
You were the one who was implying that gliding made FMCs count as a jump MC

I'm going to quote what you said
That is wrong. Glide lets FMC move like a Jump unit. They are not treated as one.

Glide is a form of Movement. You treat that movement like a Jump Creature, yes or no?

Okay so what I'm getting is that regardless of if it is a vehicle or creature, and regardless of mode, sky fire can hit FMCs or flyers (vehicles) at full BS.
Also, if a vehicle is hovering, it is treated as a skimmer so non sky fire weapons can still use full BS.
However, regardless of flying mode, to fire at FMCs with full BS requires sky fire, UNLESS they have been grounded in which case they are counted as... What? Can sky fire weapons still shoot with full ballistic skill? What about non? (This is assuming it stays grounded. Or maybe you grounded it in the psychic phase and now it's on the ground in the shooting phase. Can that happen?) Thanks!

No. If a weapon does not have Skyfire, it can fire at full ballistic against a gliding FMC. Being grounded basically reverts the FMC to gliding mode until the controlling player's turn (in which they can either choose to keep gliding, or go back to swooping). zhutch wrote:UNLESS they have been grounded in which case they are counted as... A grounded FMC is still a FMC (i.e. still in the list of weapons that Skyfire fires at full ballistic at, as discussed above), but is no longer Hard to Hit (as that's a property of swooping), thus weapons without Skyfire also shoot at normal ballistic against it. zhutch wrote:(This is assuming it stays grounded. Yes, a FMC can fail a grounding test in the Psychic phase, and thus will be gliding in the subsequent shooting phase.
