I'm currently building a gallant for my household detachment. So far I have a crusader with a rapid fire battle cannon and melta gun and a warden with a melta gun.
I'm pretty set on most of the gallants kit. He's going to be my warlord, he'll have stormspear rockets on his carapace and the helm of the nameless warrior relic. But the smallest detail in stumbling over. - meltagun or stubber.
The other two both have melta. The crusader has been designed to be a fire platform and the melta has worked very well. The warden has also used it to great effect, but has the bonus of a flamer template to shoot at anything he wants to charge. The gallant however doesn't have any other ranged weapons to allow me to charge something different. So that's the purpose of this weapon. But the melta could end up wrecking whatever it shoots at and therefore not allowing the charge.....
Please help!

Meltagun probably. Considering that your goal with a Gallant is to charge into combat, and your maximum charge range is 12", then the ranges sync up fairly well - obviously if the charge range is already dicey and you don't want to risk a casualty making it worse then you don't fire it. A Heavy Stubber taking pot-shots across the board doesn't really gain you any benefit. A Meltagun on the other hand is a high Strength shot that could take a wound off a MC before you charge or pop open a Transport if you're lucky so you chop the juicy contents inside.

Can you charge the contents if you pop the transport?

Yes, its one of (the only?) times you are allowed to charge a different target than the one you shot at.

Facts are chains that bind perception and fetter truth. For a man can remake the world if he has a dream and no facts to cloud his mind. |

Yes, thank you for posting this, I guess I overlooked this rule because it's a small paragraph at the end of transports. I also thought the latter.
