So, being a stickler for "historically accurate" models in a fantasy universe, I was wonder what newer mentions there are of the colour of power weapons, power swords in particular? I've only seen 2nd edition and Necromunda descriptions, which all boil down to "shimmering blue field."

I'm pretty sure one of the Uriel Ventris novels describes his sword as green.

on the forum. Obviously

They appear to be blue when wielded by imperials, and red / pinkish purple when used by chaos, iirc.

I dont think there is a universal "colour" or even that they have a "colour".

I would suggest the universal constant is they have a power field, not that the power field is coloured or not

Artwork tends to depict them as normalish looking swords crackling with electricity, usually bluish, sometimes red, yellow, or orange.

Inquisitor eisenhorn had a relic power sword that had no blade, only a filament protected by an energy field - but he lost it.

there's some old symbolism and colour theory behind the colours of lightsabers, so it makes sense you'd see it elsewhere.

that said Green was the colour of Ventris' company, and red is often a colour associated with agression war and blood shed.

Very old reference materail :-) plus really only 2 sources rather than the 6 it suggests as from only 2 books. Good find though

They're normal swords but most of the damage IIRC comes from a shimmering energy field. Pretty sure a lightning effect is seen when the sword strikes something.

Electrical energy discharges naturally flouresce blue in an oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere, so I suppose a blue glow around power swords and the like is a rare stab at scientific realism on GW's part. (At least so long as it occurs on worlds with Earth-like atmospheres.)

Of course, 40k being governed by rather... selective rules of physics, you'd almost expect electrical discharge to produce a red glow around power weapons wielded by the bad guys...

Paint it whatever glow you want, and argue rule of cool and move on.

To many unpainted models to count.
