I saw a discussion like this on One Ring a while back, http://www.one-ring.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=29735&sid=a3d1425b48366a7e571f9535a71d4807. I have never played Shadows of Mordor but I do really enjoy the concept from what I have seen. So after supplying this piece of resource, I'll sit back and watch this develop while only making peeps about balance and practicality.
Jeez...i hope not. That game was quite an abomination when it came to actually respecting the source material. One thing you can say about GW is when they add their own creations they work hard at keeping them within the spirit of Tolkiens work. If a character like Celebrimbor came in, it should be in a dedicated Eregion supplement.
I'd not expect the profiles to be official or touched by GW at all, but the idea intrigues me for houserules nonetheless. Despite the noncanon essence that is the Shadow of Mordor universe, it is still cool nonetheless and would be cool to see on a tabletop.
GW's license is for the movie version of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The only canon characters they can make are those that were mentioned in the films (if even only in passing).

I am pretty sure they have licence for the book too, right? I do not think Glorifendel was mentioned in the movies. Either way, with Middle-Earth SBG they supposedly will gain licence (if they don't have it already) for the pages of the books, however they do not gain access to the appendixes.

Does this mean that there is a new version of the game on the way?

Not specifically. There's a new Supplement coming out in September i believe it was, but no new rulebook for a while. Not that it really needs it in my opinion.
Groups like GBHL have been freaking out because at Warhammer World whatever Convention, they got to go inside and see what was happening. Adam Troke announced a new update to the rules and a lot of new model releases coming out such as Dain on Boar. Adam has even been calling all hands on deck to get pictures of models and suggestions for the game. Admirable effort in my opinion. I am quite excited.
I like the rules, but I think there are a lot of areas that need addressing to clarify and even help simplify the game.
