Subject: How expensive to paint Alarielle?

I really want to paint the model using the tutorial but Iam a bit put off by the number of paints required. It's around 30 and Iam worried that's more expensive than the model itself.

There are other companies out there with very similar paint lines that sell cheaper than GW, which might be worth looking into.
There are also paints you could probably skip on that list they use and just mix the colours yourself with the other paints you get/have from the list, but that might require a bit more experience.
Otherwise you could use the tutorial as more of a guide and substitute some colours here and there?

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

See my concern is that if I deviate from the guide I'd get it wrong and it's a big reason for me getting te army so I don't really want to paint at my current standard. I also really don't have a lot of those paints since I mostly just base coat and wash. I mean, out of curiosity, what sort of ballpark figure will the paints cost?

I was in your position last year
When AoS came out, I decided to change my painting style and use the GW painting guides - and yes, you will invest in an unbelievable amount of paints. In fact, if you are anything like me, there will be multiple occasions where you look at two different pots of paint, and swear they are the same shade. However, when you actually use them, you will find that Duncan does actually know what he is talking about
At the end of the day, it all depends on the final result you are after. If you want to up your painting standard, then you should probably take the plunge and get all the paints they suggest. Yes, there are other paint ranges and yes, you could mix your own paints but if, like me, you have a definite Talent Limit but still want decent results, you are better off being led by the nose by Duncan and his team and doing as you are told
Should also point out that you are unlikely to completely use any of the paints they suggest, so consider them the start of a paint collection that you will use on future models. And you will have a really nice looking army.

As much as I think GW paints are overpriced and hate the caps and how easy they dry the paint out, those tutorials are great for helping people improve.

The paint pots and caps are a paint in the butt, the important thing is to be a real stickler for cleaning them thoroughly after use, closing them properly and tightly, and double checking them. They do make a great paint line though. And Duncan does do a great tutorial. The paints are available for a little cheaper from places like Darksphere, so it might be worth stocking up there, especially if you are getting that many.

Seriously, if your normal standard is 'base and wash' and you're looking to improve, I'd suggest doing infantry first using the videos.
Having the right paints is one thing, knowing how to get the technique right is quite another.
You don't want to be using a model like Alarielle as a practice piece!

Well, no.
I can layer and highlight. Painted Gulliman from the forgeworld range and some other FW units to an okay standard. So I can be neat, I am just normally very impatient and not invested in spending days on core infantry. I like to cut corners. So my plan is to just take my time with Alarielle. The rest of the army Iam fine with.

The Warhammer painting tutorial are absolutely amazing! I recommend watching them even for models you have no intention of picking up. You learn some amazing techniques from them!

Look around a bit for what he's actually painting. sometimes, he'll end up using 4 paints something like an amphora in a purple hue... Something you might be able to mix yourself with blue and red on a wet pallete.

I was pleasantly surprised the other day regarding the GW paint caps. I hadn't painted for like a year(moved to new home, then just was lazy) so when I got inspiration to paint I cringed at the idea of all those GW paints most which likely are dead useless now.
Much to my surprise haven't yet found one bottle that isn't usable. Okay bit thinner needed but holy. Older line they would have been solid pieces by now...

I know that feel on Guilliman. Though my problem with painting Guilliman is that part of me thinks that the pragmatic Lord of Ultramar wouldn't have nearly so much bling on his armour. And would wear a helmet.
