Hi all! After leaving fantasy a long while ago, I've gotten back in due to a good deal on an army, and I was looking for any input on these models and what would work well with them, thanks in advance!

1 Empire (erm.... free peoples?)Wizard
1 Empire Battle standard bearer
1 steam tank
20 state troops (no weapons yet)
10 hand gunners
10 great swords

I'm gonna fluff it up (probably) as a merc. + a wizard buddy looking to do something amazing. I'd like to stick to mostly forces of order, but I'm not about adding a necromancer + skelles

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

As i just got into aos myself after 14 years away from fantasy, it seems like a math free vserson of 40k for dummies like the books if you will, how ever i do like the game, i dont know much about tje armies but gw dose have free warscrolls n the 3 page rule book in pdf format, with that being sayed ornknowen already and an army ur ready for a game, but fluff armies do give your oppend a sudden death victory kill a unit kill a general ect, i dint think i was gona like it but after a game im now waiting for me matebto b free for another, happy gameing

That sounds like a really solid and fun army to play with/against. I don't know how it will work with the points but I'd like to face off against it.

Welcome to the Freeguilds!

It's a nice start you have there, it is actually one Battalion already; The Empire State Troop Detachment. Which is a really strong detachment that buffs all your troops for sticking together. You'll also find your General w/ Banner's 'Hold the Line' ability to be great and fun to use.

Moving forward you could go for whatever you fancy. Your army sounds similar to mine in some ways, I too have a mercenary company with a Freeguild core and I added some Fyreslayers - Dwarves - Elf Heros and a Necromancer.

It's great for narrative and open play but in Matched Play I find it falls short because all the odd units don't synergise with eachother. I have a 2000 point army in that style fully painted, but I am now looking to drop all the non "Empire" elements in favour of more Empire so that the army synergies better and is more competetive.

Are you going to be jumping in with Matched Play or instead focus on Narrative or Open? Obviously you'll be likely to play all three, but knowing which one in particular takes your fancy would help to shape our suggestions for you.

Welcome back

Edit - you might find it useful to know you have just shy of 900 points there.

Thanks for the info! I'm probably gonna get started in matched (since that's what a buddy of mine is using to drag me back in ) but locally there's a lot of narrative and open play as well. I actually picked up the models last night and the total collection is:

2 Battle Wizards
1 General w/ standard
1 General on warhorse
1 warrior priest w/ greathammer
1 witch hunter

2 10-man state troop squads w/ banner, musician, sword and shield
10-man handcannon squad w/ longrifle on leader

10 greatswords w/ banner
1 steam tank
8 knights w/ banner & lances and shields

From here I wanna try and get another 20 state troops (either use them to pump up sword squads or go for a 10-man halberd squad), and 10 more handgunners as a base. From there some cannons, elf wizards, or some dwarf warriors + gunners + other fun stuff seems nice. I still like the idea of a necromancer and a bunch of skeletons for the laughs. Beyond that, I'm still not sure both 1) what would fit the theme, and 2) what would be half decent on the table top

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.
