In the Warp, getting trolled by Tactical_Spam, AKA TZEENTCH INCARNATE

I'm starting a small Vampire Counts army, but have no idea how to build a viable list. Currently, I was thinking of the following:

1x Wight King
1x Necromancer

5x Grave Guard (blades & shields)
5x Grave Guard (great Wight blades)

10x Tomb Kings Archers (converted from the Grave Guard kit)

10x Skeletons

5x Black Knights

6x Spirit Hosts

What do you guys think?

Tactical_Spam: Ezra is fighting reality right now.

War Kitten: Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...

War Kitten: Ezra can steal reality

Kharne the Befriender:Took him seven years but he got it wrangled down

Looks nice, although I personally would drop the Spirit Hosts for more Black Knights. The stats on those are personally better than the Spirits.

TheEyeOfNight I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes.
Tactical_Spam Vanden clearly loves making sweet sweet love to his school. He is the most passionate, learning oriented individual you will ever meet.
War Kitten You should ask nicely before hitting people with your stick Vanden. We're a polite society after all.
2BlackJack1 Snow is great though. Snowmen, snowball fights, frostbite, snow forts, what's not to love?
Kharne the Befriender It's just the smug look of eternal irony while you wait for Creed to pull out his Baneblade so you can steal it.
War Kitten I love how this has gone from a deathly serious war to a discussion about how Vanden is secretly a whale wearing panties. Welcome to the Crusade of Fury.
Irishpeacockz Well this crusade will be endless then as I imagine Vandan has a large collection of inflatables lying around

Not sure how you can say they're better when in most ways it's comparing apples and oranges as they're so different and at the same time you seem to be dismissing the massive amount of attacks Spirit Hosts have, coupled with their Mortal Wound output and on top of that they are tanky as they ignore rend and have a 4+ save.

Black Knights are good if you can get the charge, or roll high on the banner to tarpit something. But after that they don't have a great damage output.

Spirit Hosts are some of my favourite models in my Death army and they perform very well.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I meant no offense friend! It's just my experience with Black Knights is a million times better than my experience with Spirit Hosts. That, and I prefer cavalry to anything else in the game, just ask my Saurus Cold-Bloods.

The Spirit Hosts were a bit of an afterthought, I'm planning on converting the Hexwraith portion of the Black Knights' kit into Spirit Hosts, as their Grim Reaper aesthetic is just too good not to use

None taken Spirit Hosts are really good in my opinion though.

Apologies for bumping the thread a bit, but I have another question about this army: how much points are all these models combined? I haven't bought a copy of the General's Handbook yet, so I can't look it up myself, but I read in other threads that armies of 1000-1500 points have about 40-50 models, which is pretty much the number I'm looking at at the moment. Is this too big for practice games? And if so, what units should I leave out in the first few games I play?

This adds up to 940p.

But I think you are in trouble with your battleline units (or rather, not have enough of those). Only your skellies are battleline because of the alliagence.

I think that the key to running skellies effectively, is to take larger units, backed up by lots of wight kings.

And you are looking at more than 40-50 models if you plan on going heavy on the skellies like this... (they are 80p per 10 or 100p for 10 archers). So I would prepare for more models if you aren't takeing any behemoths in your army.

The boy, I say, the boy is as sharp as a sack of wet mice...

Spirit Hosts are great, I would much rather have them in my army than Black Knights. In my experience, Black Knights just don't do a whole lot.

The problem with the army is that it's not legal in Matched Play, since you need two battleline units. If you want to play 1000 points, which is a very good army size to practice with, I would make the following changes in your list:

Wight King
Necromancer
Tomb Herald (converted from Grave Guard kit)

10x Skeletons
10x Skeletons
10x Skeletons
15x Grave Guard
5x Black Knights

Formation: Legion of Death

This would give you a very mobile and surviveable skeleton force, centered around a large unit of grave guard. The force adds up to 1000 points exactly (if you want to check points costs, go to scrollbuilder.com). You can exchange 10 grave guard for 3 spirit hosts or 10 skeleton archers if you wish, which would land you on 960 and 940 points respectively. Alternatively, if you dislike the large amount of skeletons, you could drop one unit together with the formation and add other things. However, that would make the army much weaker.

Hope I could be of help =)

Hmmm... thing is, I'm not really sold on the regular Skeleton warriors' aesthetics, so I'd prefer to work with the things I have (which is, everything I've listed in the OP)...

Also, you said that one needs two 'battleline units' to have a legal army. Do they have to be the same unit twice? Or is there some variation possible? I checked out scrollbuilder.com, and it (somewhat confusingly) tells me that the Black Knights are Deathrattle Battleline and the Skeleton Warriors are just Battleline, but I'm guessing that isn't the same thing?

That means that Black Knights are Battleline so long as all the units in your army have the Deathrattle keyword. Necromancers and Spirit Hosts do not have that, so for your army Black Knights are not battleline.

I've been looking on scrollbuilder.com some more in the hopes of finding a solution for the battleline-units-problem, and I think I may have found something. According to scrollbuilder, the TK Skeleton Horsemen are regular, non-specific Battleline units, so if I replace my Black Knights with those, then I have my two required Battleline units, right?

The list would then look something like this:

1x Wight King
1x Necromancer

10x VC Skeleton Warrios (Battleline)
10x TK Archers
10x VC Grave Guard
5x TK Skeleton Horsemen (Battleline)
6x Spirit Hosts

This mounts up to 920 points. What do you guys think?

Been trying out various combinations and builds with my skellie force from the handbook release. Main problem with skellies is they tend to be fairly weak in both offense and defense, what they are great at is being a tarpit and grinding down the enemy while slowly replenishing their numbers with the banner.
Taking a unit of ten, I've found to be ineffective, they need to be 15-20 strong minimum to act as your anvil, and then use something like great weapon grave guard (who I've had a lot of success with and deal out an awful lot of hurt) or black knights on the charge (who really need to get that charge to do any sort of damage) as your hammer.
Skeleton archers I like a lot as a support unit and they have good synergy also being deathrattle units, but again work far better as a unit of 20+ for the extra shot.

cheap ethereal units such as spirit hosts or a banshee (who has been my star player in most games) are excellent speed bumps for holding up small elite units allowing my skellies to engage piecemeal rather than taking the full force of enemy units at the same time
