I was just wondering if you guys feel it's OK to use the Multimelta and Heavy Flamer on the Land Speeder model as "Counts as" if you want to run either dual Multimeltas or dual Heavy Flamers. The profile for both guns is extremely similar for starters, and I really don't want to magnetize a gun fired by the copilot on such a small model this after looking at the kit up close. I'm OK with attempting to magnetize the Typhoon Missile Launchers and the gun mount underneath, but that's a lot easier to pull off.
I'm trying to get things as close to WYSIWYG as possible, but do you guys feel most players will be alright the occasional "Counts as" like this?

Are all your speeders the same?
If you say “All my speeders are 2xMM” then I probably won’t have a big issue with it. Unless there are a lot of other things I need to track. If one HF/ MM speeder is being played as a 2xMM, and another HF/ MM speeder is being played as a 2xHF speeder, then I have a problem. The potential of loosing track or a malicious switch is higher then I’d be comfortable with.
My general rules of thumb for counts as:
Keep it consistent. Blanket statements are your friend. All X is Y is good. This X is Y, this other X is Z is bad.
Keep it rare. If I need to track more then 3 things in your army, it becomes an unfun chore.
Rule of Cool forgives a lot, as does good paint. If your warlord is lovingly converted and painted, but happens to have slightly different wargear, I’m less likely to raise a stink about it. random partially assembled lumps of grey? Gets old fast.

Thanks for the reply!
01. I'm going to run these in a squad of three. So honestly they should always have the same weapons for range and redundancy. Thankfully this was already a given (but I do think you're right about making counts as blanket statements)
02. The only other thing I'm considering is the combi-weapons on my Sergeants (they might be Combi-Flamers or Combi-Meltas, counting as either depending on the game, but they would all be the same.)
03. I'm taking my time painting up this new space marine force. This has been a big art project for me (gotten used to using an airbrush this time around, and I'm getting stellar results!)
04. I just have limited funds for models since I invested in the airbrush, and I don't feel confident magnetizing everything, so I'm trying to stretch my buck as far as I can within reason. Same time I don't want things to be a headache for my opponents since I don't have any close friends who currently play and I want to be able to meet other gamers at the local stores without it being much of a hassle when this is all done up.

I say mount up one set with Multi-Meltas up top and one set with Multi-meltas on the bottom, so at least if you need both kinds in a game you have some way of easily telling which one is flamers and which one is meltas.
Personally though I prefer the Typhoon launchers. but I just like the looks of them.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do. |

honestly i dont think anyone will care, as long as you say right up front, "Hey this multi melta is actually a heavy flamer," i have never meet some one that has said, well no you cant do that.
Do it all the time with my bikes, since they dont come with chain swords.

To many unpainted models to count. |

I actually do this myself, but only when I'm running all my speeders as doing the same thing. But then I have the old timey metal speeders from second edition. The heavy flamers would be a bitch to magnetise. The meltas are actually magnetised with assault cannons.

I have to vote no, especially when it comes to recognizable guns like Heavy Flamers and Multi-Meltas, if at all possible your weapons should be WYSIWYG. It's definitely worth the effort to make things look right. The last thing you want is for your opponent to get confused about what loadout your models have, and sour what could have been an otherwise enjoyable game.

I agree. I hate making missplays due to forgetting something=something else. Over a multi hour game, it can be hard in the moment to remember what your opponents counts as are.
