I'll admit, I'm a fairly lazy hobbyist.
Younger me was drawn to necrons as an army due to the ease of painting.
Older me is trying to paint up some Dark Angels, as if i get bored of painting green, then I'll paint deathwing.....and then ravenwing.
I've also taken to painting with as much with spray paint as I can to speed up processes.
Finishing up bases on older models that younger me didnt bother doing?....just use cracklepaint

I find that I'm more drawn to skirmish games now as I'd rather spend 5 hours painting a single dude, than even 2 hours painting the same green over and over.

But have you guys ever found that you "laziness" as a hobbyist has ever helped you out unexpectedly?

I'm currently making/painting a Spiderfang grots arm for Age of Sigmar, and so dusted off some old spider rider models to re-base and re-purpose......rejoice!!! lazy younger me had decided against gluing them onto the little pegs on their older bases, allowing friction to hold them in place, making my job much easier when re-basing them as I didd't need to faff with cutting them off.

I'm the opposite, but I get it. There is a huge discussion over at the Lead Adventure Forum regarding this very topic. I don't have a problem with "lazy" hobbyists, the hobby is different for everyone.

I've got a friend who loves putting his stuff together, building lists and gaming but he's never going to paint his army, but whatever, they are his little men and if I demanded that he paint his stuff or get it off my table we'd never get a game in.

On the other hand I've got a friend who spends way, way to much time on each guy, and while they are amazing he finishes a squad every 6 months and so the majority if his army is either unpainted or semi painted. again if I demanded he lower his standards to play so we each could have fully painted army we'd never play.

Yes, two fully painted armies facing off on a table filled with cool terrain is the ideal, but if we all held out for the ideal most of us wouldn't be playing.

I'm an efficient hobbyist- all my armies are painted (pretty nicely I think) but I very much want to get the finished army in the table so paint it using certain time saving techniques.

Currently just finished painting a dropzone army, used the airbrush to do camo stripes, minimal other details (as having seen tanks with camo - you cover everything) and them Weather it to get a decent effect - it's effective and quick

I love the modeling, but will probably never paint the guys. I can paint okay, and my first Necron models showcase that mediocrity. However, when starting from scratch, I just want to properly present the dudes. Painting has been an afterthought for a long time.

Slightly even lazier - I prefer to go for the pre-painted and assembled game pieces, like X-Wing. Plop and play, don't have to waste hours getting things together just to play.

Funnily enough, I've done some repaints on those models.

I have also bought several 40K models off E-bay that were already assembled and painted (and half the cost of new in box), and they were good enough to use as is.

Also, for the longest time I used to paint my bases black when I finished my models. Mostly I just liked that the black bases didn't take away from the model itself (if clear acrylic bases had been a thing long ago, I would have done them with those). Now, however, on some of my armies I have been redoing the bases with scenic effects (mostly my 'Nids and 'Crons). Having left those bases black so many years ago, I don't have to strip them to fancy them up.

It never ends well

I love modeling, and will spend hours on conversions and scratchbuilds.

But painting is awful. I hate it, I'm terrible at it, and I don't find it rewarding.

I found that about 5-8 years ago, after about a decade already painting, I started finding it impossible to assembly-line paint anymore. I don't think I have finished a traditional army since then.

The closest I can come lately is my 15mm Kings of War project, where each 10-man troop is represented by a rank of 3 figures, on a base half the scale of 28mm KoW (so 50mmx25mm). So almost like a skirmish-level portrayal of KoW.

Ah, see thats probably a better way of reffering to it! Efficient, not lazy.

Its not that Im lazy, its that I find some things people go way, way overboard on. Often I'll be told "It took me 40 hours to do this!" and its something that should take 3 for the same, if not better effect.

Efficiency is priority #1, life is too short.

At my core I am a very lazy person! That is why I am an efficiency expert IRL. The only people lazier are Salespeople.

I always paint to the Arm's length rule. If it looks good enough at arm's length, I am happy.

For me it's less being lazy and much more acute Hobby ADD. I have several things going on at once that help break up the monotony of painting the same thing over and over.

I'll pick a regiment I want to finish but in between models I'll work on a piece of terrain, or just slap a Bones mini on a base and paint that up with a totally different colour scheme to keep me motivated.

My AADD and hobby lazy-ness hasn't necessarily been a help, but I've found ways to work around it and ways to do things fast enough that jumping from project to project means that I get more done rather than less.

Things like...
-Brush Dipping figures
-Various methods of using spray paint cans and drybrushing to quickly finish painting terrain.
-Using second hand toys as the basis for terrain, allowing me to save lots of time that would otherwise be spent constructing and greebling.

The end result of this is that I get alot done and in most cases when my AADD causes me to jump projects I'm either done with one project or far enough along that I can jump back later and finish it up quickly.

Outer Space, Apparently

One time I couldn't be asked to glue the Battle Cannons to the turrets of my Leman Russ tanks, instead I slotted them into the turret before closing it with the lower half by friction alone. Turned out to be super useful as I was later able to exchange the cannons for Erradicator Nova cannons to deal with a Chaos Daemon player. Pretty proud of myself
