So, polls open in around five hours on the East Coast. We'll spend much of the day hearing about that one county with three people in it all going to Trump. Actual results should start trickling in around 7:00pm EST if exit polling is accurate.
I wonder what kind of election place shenanigans will make the news this year?

Five hours? Polls open in less than three hours here in Virginia. I was considering stopping on my way home from work because I drive past our polling place but I'm going to wait to go with my wife later in the morning.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

It's over, thank God it's over!
Two years of hot air and horsegak, wall to wall coverage, which in the end, added up to nothing of any substance....
And now the USA is faced with choosing between a punch on the nose or a kick in the nuts...
Normally, I used to enjoy staying up to watch the election coverage, high on Diet Coke at 3am
but I think I'll skip this one.

Good post.
I don't know how much info you have on UK politics, but some of our big parties faced the same problem, and faced the same obstacles.
My party SNP (Scottish Nationalist Party) started off as a fringe movement, and was dismissed as crackpots for years.
But they gained traction, people voted for them, and now they are the government in Scotland, having replaced a party (Labour) who were thought to be invincible...
I know the American system is different, but don't give up on third parties.

I was watching old presidential debates on Youtube, and they were remarkable for the fact that candidates talked about policy i.e what they would do: Cold War, education, employment, and so on...
This election, and the Obama campaigns, were a wretched vacuum of grievance, personality politics, and vote for me because I'm not him.
No ideas, no bold vision, no grand plan for the USA...nothing....
As always, I followed this election closely, and this may not be news to you, but IMO, there is two Americas:
The America of California, New York, New England etc etc
and everybody else in between i.e small town America.
And small town America is getting hammered by falling healthcare, education, life expectancy etc etc they've been left behind by globalization.
Clinton as president will change nothing for them. Trump probably wouldn't either, but I can understand why people are voting for him...

Ok, quick update on the state of the race.
The psychic Scottish goat has called the election for Clinton:
http://www.scotsman.com/news/video-psychic-scottish-goat-predicts-next-us-president-1-4280162
But the mystical Chinese monkey has chosen Trump:

So early results seem mixed. With any luck, a pre-cognisant squid will come along to break this deadlock.

I'm pretty sure that trickle down economics was debunked years ago, as the rich actively take steps to hide their gains, and so, nothing trickles down.
The Panama Papers taught us that.

So, apparently over the weekend the Governor of Virginia (Dem) pardoned 60,000 felons. This restored their voting rights and a good chunk were gleefully added to the voting polls.
As a side note, this also granted them the ability to legally buy firearms again....... Anyone else see this being bad in the future?

Not really. Education is largely a state/local issue. 'Small town America' repeatedly votes Republican for the last 30 years, which means the people in charge of their education system are the Republicans who constantly attack and cut funding for teachers and education. Same (Lately...It's a relatively new issue) with health care since it's a Democratic issue, Republicans have to be against helping with it.

Jesus, why do American elections have such long lines? Here in Australia, we have mandatory voting (>95% turnout), and I've never waited more than 10 minutes to vote. There was a minor scandal when some waiting times at some stations were nearly an hour during our last election. Yet over in America, with far lower turnout, you hear countless stories of people waiting several hours to vote, and lines winding around the block. Is it just bad organization, or is it just due to parties trying to suppress turnout by making voting difficult?

I still think it's more complicated than that.
I read an article about a small American town that went from a busy high street, to a ghost town when a new Walmart turned up and put everybody out of business.

Republican-held state houses have a habit of closing polling places in order to decrease turnout (as high turnouts typically works in favor of democrats). This, in turn, makes waits horrifyingly long at the polling places that are still open.

Exactly. If I have to spend more than 5 minutes voting on UK election day, I'm mad, because it rarely happens.

Of course they do.
But it is lazy to dismiss something out of hand without any attempt to refute it. Bias does not automatically mean some argument or claim is automatically false.
I don't want to hear your partisan hate boner for anything and everything that the other side says or how much you distrust and loathe the sources they cite, I want to know if a specific claim or argument is true or false. Is that too much to ask?
You're damned right sources matter and when I see the FBI, who've more intimately than anyone else, looked at this email carnival ride up, down and sideways and concluded, once again, as they did, then I'm done validating this matter with the constant barrage of self-servicing attempts to grab another headline or 15 minutes of my attention. I have a hate boner, but it's for the partisan politicians, partisan reporters and their partisan rags constantly beating dead horses and scandal mongering for the sole purpose of distracting people. This email matter has been given more coverage than Watergate and that is the real crime in this matter!
You're still whingeing about how how awful the other side is instead of answering my original question.

In all fairness, educational standards don't exactly rise when Democrats are allowed to throw money at it either. Case in point, the Kansas City school district. After white flight in the 1960's the KC school district was mostly Black and underfunded, so the city sued the stated in order to fund it. The presiding judge gave the district so much money that not only were they the most well funded public school in the nation, but the entire world. Teachers got huge bumps in pay, new facilities were constructed, state of the art computer labs, and class sizes of 16. What did it do for education? Not a dang thing.
