Without the votes from California, that's a pretty unlikely position.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Well as exciting as this is, I have to work tomorrow, regardless who wins.

But it's looking like Trump will take PA, MI and AZ. So that would wrap it up.

pretty much this in a nutshell. As a nation we hate each other (left and right) so much that we are getting to a bad situation. There is not likely to be much reconciliation after this election and the winner (whoever it ends up) will likely exult in the downfall of thier opponent and insist they have a mandate. Neither will listen to the other side and there will be no compromises. There has to be some manner of civility, the best way is for each side to police its own.

All that said, I agree we need to tone down our interactions on this forum, but as I look at the electoral/county maps, I see the areas swinging to Trump are predominately those where the voting bloc is predominately filled with people who hold only a high school diploma or less. What I see in this election is the classic political science mantra: those who have less education typically vote conservative, even against their best interests, and those who have more education tend to vote more progressive.

That's a big part of why this is happening.

I suspect that there is no coincidence that turn out is so low, and I suspect that's going to end up being the most significant factor.

People turned out to vote for Trump.

They didn't to vote for Clinton.

Could also end up like Brexit. People who didn't normally vote ended up voting and people who normally do didn't.

being educated and being intelligent are not the same thing.

Is this like how facts are the same thing as feelings?

What he posted is not wrong. It's a phenomena that is well-known. You could have a conservative running on a platform that will be wildly detrimental to those voters, but as long as it is not blatantly obvious?

They'll vote for that conservative.

Look at the justifications used for tax breaks for the wealthy, for example.
"They need the money to create jobs"...but what mechanism is there to keep the jobs where they're needed?

Or hell, one of my favorites--sales tax and reduced taxes on the middle/lower class.
Commonly, you have people talking about "reduced taxes on the middle/lower class" but ignoring that a change in sales tax rates effectively negates that.

Nate Cohn made an interesting point:

How to think about this election: white working class voters just decided to vote like a minority group. They're >40% of the electorate.

If this isn't a fluke and the white working class has been "racialized," Democrats have some very bad years ahead of them.

The large growers, perhaps. There aren't enough FBI agents to go around slapping cuffs on every skater kid tooling down city sidewalks.

The other question for me goes to the GOP in the legislature.

They have safely repealed Obamacare over and over again, knowing that there were no consequence to their actions since it would always be vetoed.

So now what do they do?

Problem is that unlike when I happily admitted voting for Obama...I'm not sure how I feel about who I voted for in this election. And I won't publically say who I voted for. But to say I was as comfortable with either candidate as I was with voting Obama? Nope. Can't say it. Cuz I wasn't. I stared at the poll sheet for about 5 minutes before making a decision.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Given the massive price hikes expected next year with the ACA, I wouldn't be surprised to see some action taken on it.

I think where 4 million votes is less than 1/3 of what California has reported, it's perfectly feasible for the sheer number of votes and heavy Democratic favor here to still earn Clinton the nation's popular vote. But it'd definitely be a stretch. And it sure doesn't have any further impact on the electoral college.

The Hillary campaign headquarters is pretty dejected. Everyone thought she was the President-elect when polls opened.
