So we are to count for our safety in his underlings disobeying direct orders...

Yeah that's comforting when you consider that in military obeying orders is drilled pretty hard on you.

Well at least there's one sliver of silver assuming humans don't all die because of this. Maybe Finland finally puts the stupid "let's join NATO" idea to trashbin. Since that would just increase expenses with zero practical quarantees useless piece of paper.

I hope our nation can get past the divide that has been fostered this election. That we can pull together. I hope our system of checks and balances can curb any excesses from our new president. I hope a lot of his empty rhetoric was, in fact, empty. It’s going to be an interesting four years. But if we stand together, we can weather it, and hopefully come out stronger.

I've said it once, I'll say it again: after 15 years of disaster in Iraq and Afghanistan, Trump's foreign policy is exactly what the USA needs right now, if he holds true to his earlier comments.

Sensible, pragmatic, realpolitik. Don't run towards a battle, but never run away from one, either....

That will hopefully be Trump's foreign policy.
Military action in Iraq and Afghanistan only served to stoke the flames of Islamic extremism. There are more insurgents and terrorists now than ever, and unfortunately there no easy solutions. No amount of bombs or intervention is going to make this problem go away. Eventually, we will have to concede that the war on terror is a war we can't win. If we started now, with the right blend of policies and reforms, then maybe the problem might peter out in a few generations, so our great grandchildren won't have to deal with it. That's the only way out. The idea that it might be solved within our lifetime is just wishful thinking.

Personally, I don't think Trump has the temperament to resist stoking the fire, which will just drag things out indefinitely.

Hillary: 58,875,708 Popular Votes
Johnson: 3,814,239 Popular Votes

Ignoring the other also-rans, that's 121,532,236.

As of yesterday, there were 200 million registered voters.

There are 241 million people of voting age.

4 million can't vote due to being felons or other reasons.

~115,467,764 people, 48.7% decided yesterday wasn't important. Just like every election.

Well done.

So, Trump has won, and we all lose because of it.

A man who wants to basically ban a religion. A man who makes fun of the disabled. A man who insults POWs. A man who insults gold star families. A man who wants to wall us off from another country. A man who publicly professed admiration for tyrants and dictators. A man who believes he can do whatever he wants to a woman because he has the power and she does not. And so on.

And Americans decided they were ok with all of that. Whatever reasons they used to justify it (he's not Hillary, SCOTUS nominees, the party will keep him in check, etc.), they have still sent the message that one can do all of that, and still be elected.

We say we want better politicians, but we then elect someone with many of the worst qualities in humanity. And now we're going to get more like him, because if it worked for him, it will work for others.

That's why we all lost last night.

I wish everybody the best of luck, but I'm going to stay away from this thread for a day or two.

Trump's potential problem, which he hasn't yet understood, is that his campaign has mobilised some forces at the grass roots that he may not be able to satisfy or control.

All overreactions to nothing. Dubya didn't suspend elections and become the Eternal President of America (or Hitler, as he was so often called). Obama didn't march everyone into FEMA death camps to be forcibly converted to Communist Islam whilst stealing all their guns!!! Trump isn't going to start launching nukes at Mecca.

The issue isn't so much a Trump presidency but that the GOP has control of every branch of the government. That much control means they can pass whatever the party wants and there is little to nothing the Dems can do to stop it. Affordable Care Act is gone 100% (there goes my health insurance) and we will probably see bills passing that attack LGBT rights, women's reproductive rights, environmental regulation, worker rights, funding for social services, etc.

Wrong. The Republicans don't have a super majority they have a narrow majority in the Senste. The Republicans have less than 60 seats in the Senate so they aren't filibuster proof and they are going to need virtually every Republican in the Senate to vote in unison among party lines to pass legislation which is much harder to do than you think.

Repealing Obamacare has been the GOP's big target legislation for years and any Republican that doesn't vote for that will condemn themselves to being a party traitor. Same for a good deal of other platform issues as well. Dems can only Filibuster so much before it hurts their popularity and set themselves up for a tougher time during midterm elections. Only hope for the senate is that the rift in the GOP that Trump caused disrupts that unity and we have senators willing to reach across the aisle. In the end either party having majority control in all 3 branches is not good for the country.

I dunno, non stop filibustering and holding up the process seemed to work for the Republicans...

I think a Trump victory might be more destructive to the republican party then a loss.

Demographics are shifting away from them. Some Rs might see the writing on the wall and not embrace some of the party platforms that are stuck in the past. Party politics can only go so far. And when Trump is not able to deliver the promises he made on the campaign trail, and turns out to be another regular lying politician, I think the angry mob he mobilized is going to turn on him, and the rest of the party.

Next 4 years are going to be interesting.

Those aren't the problems with his policies, they are the reason for the disenfranchised and downtrodden to vote for him as a way of slapping the face of the power elite from Capital Hill, Wall St and elsewhere where power lies.

The problem here is that POTUS isnt remotely as powerful a position as people think it is. Many other heads of state have larger relative power, and has diluted influence over the judiciary and legislature the presidents influence on the economy is little more than petitionary, and the office really only has direct control over the foreign policy and military. You could put a chimp in the oval office and the country can run more or less as normal.

This is relevant because the disenfranchised voter who knows Trump is a bad candidate and that is exactly why they vote for him will find over the next four years that a savvy corporate stooge like Hillary Clinton has more chance and reason to steer the economy in favour of greater equality than a buffoon like Trump who will be seen as a chewtoy by Wall St.

This right here...is why Trump won. You could have dressed up a billygoat with a suit and tie, and it would have won vs hilary clinton. I think Bernie would have beaten trump by the way.

They won't won't work with Trump well at all, R or D. Too many of the Rs are beholden to the establishment type system that got them where they are and will want to protect it. They will be terrified of the 2018 elections and try to appear as a 'moderate check on the Presidency' so that the media doesn't crucify them too badly.
