So round one is over and USA won against Ireland. They are now facing team Italy for round 2. Last year Italy pulled a tie with them by one point which may have had a significant impact for the final results. Lets hope we get our revenge. Best of Luck guys!
The results can be found here:
http://tourneykeeper.net/ Automatically Appended Next Post: Looks like USA needs 17 points total from their last 2 matches (Nick and Tyler) to get the win. Should be finishing soon. Automatically Appended Next Post: Looks like USA needs a total of 17 points from their last 2 matches (Nick and Tyler) for the victory. Should be finishing soon. Automatically Appended Next Post: So looks like USA ended up with a Draw 76-84 vs Italy. Sitting at 3 points at the end of day one. Still have a very good opportunity to finish on the podium.

A tough loss for USA in round 3. If they win out they will be at 9 points which could still end up on the podium. They have Romania in round 4.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
USA got the 2 match points in round 4 plus coming up big in the total points which are used for the all important tie breakers. They made up a lot of ground and are currently sitting in 7th. If they win out tomorrow they should medal. Waiting for round 5 match ups. My guess is it will be Poland who will be a tough opponent.

Ouch. Took it on the chin against Poland. The Polish are year in and year out one of the best teams.

So why do we have such issues oversea's with winning this thing, I am in no way doubting our teams skills, I have had the pleasure of playing vs a few of team USA, are the European 'style that good?

They are better at understanding the system/have a much easier time practicing together. Think about it, they have entire teams who are within 4 hour or less drives of each other. Our players can be 4-5 hour flights away. We also take people who are very good at winning, but not necessarily trained in how to lose by the least amount possible if that makes sense. For example the german team will aim to get exactly X number of points across the entire team to make sure that they can avoid playing a certain team or things of that nature.
Its why we usually dominate the singles but have a harder time at the team level.

First off....Shaun!!! Great to know you are still alive bud! I was hoping you were going to make it to ATC this year.
Second off...can someone who follows or attends the ETC give us an idea on the play styles and such in Europe? I had heard a few years ago that the way they build lists is so different that it s a very good counter to what we have as the meta in the US. Is the Meta that different in Europe?

I had the pleasure of playing you guys (USA) in the first round. Having only played one guy once I can't really make a consistent opinion regard if there are any play issues, but to be honest he pretty much played the match up about as well as you could. I was surprised by how aggressive he was at times but it wasn't blind, it was very considered.
For context, there were 2 things that surprised me. The first one rather than hiding his scouts in the back from the outflank he went straight for a. squad of bikes on the board edge, to try and secure first blood via running off. I wouldn't have done that personally, but his thought was that I had a long enough range that I'd just push up and kill them anyway. The second one was when I shoved my invisible wraithknight right into his face, to force him to back off the remaining objectives or charge the knight. He would have needed a 2 on psychotroke followed by bopping it before initiative one (and all his fists) to avoid a stomp. He actually went over to consult the captain and the coach as to whether it was worth taking the risk, and came to conclusion that it was. Miraculously for Kurt it paid off and combined with a turn 7 end he managed to get 6 points out of it.
I really think the question shouldn't be what are the US doing wrong, they are good lads, solid players, and not afraid to take a risk. You have to remember the level they're playing at, everyone here is a top player on their local curcuit. The question should instead be, what are the Germans/Poles/Swedes/English, teams that have won the ETC, doing right?
I can't add much to that I'm afraid, as I don't have enough contrasting information. I tried to keep tabs on the English as much as I could but of course I had my own round to play. We did play the Swedes though, who paired better than any other team we were against. It might be worth having a look at their system.

Sitting in the airport in Athens right now waiting to head back (via London), thanks for keeping tabs on us Shaun!
We had a couple really bad breaks on day two that cost us a MUCH better positioning going into day three, where we got rolled by Poland instead.
The upside was that the Australians are the absolute best team to play in the final round when you're both already out of the running and just want to have some fun.
Kirasu wrote:Flights are expensive and not everyone wants to burn their vacation + money on going to play 40k. That greatly limits who can attend as well.
We only had two drops from the top five qualifiers (Alan and Sean), aside from that we had pretty much the exact team that qualified. Everyone we contacted about being potentially voted in was willing to go, so it's not like half the team was randoms due to travel restrictions or anything.

Well it was a whole cabals worth, but in a nutshell yes.
Previous years has the number of lists with serious errors been unacceptable. So this year I / we put in stringent penalties for teams not getting things right. I mean it shouldn't be up to other teams or refs to find and correct your list errors for you. I / we hoped the threat of penalties for submitting (lists are submitted in advance) incorrect or straight up illegal lists would make teams sort thief act out. Actually give the number and range of penalties it seems teams just can't help themselves.
I mean.just look down the rankings, USA was penalised lightly compared to some. Hopefully next year everyone will get it right first time.
FYI I still love the team America boys. Always great to see old faces again, meet new players, and threaten Aaron with sweaty topless man hugs if he came with anymore pain in the ass rules questions

NP is "not/non-playing," it represents the coach and is why most teams have nine people listed rather than eight.

Not necessarily. North America plays different style tournaments to Europe - many of my opponents just couldn't fathom either ITC or Nova style formats where GW maelstrom cards aren't used.

Did they use GW maelstrom card at ETC this year? I'm pretty sure the ETC had their own, modified maelstrom cards last year.
And on why you Americans dont win the ETC, here are my 2 cents from a guy who's never attended the ETC but enjoy following the results and talking to the players and so on:
As far as I know, few tournaments in Europe adapt the ITC changes, so we're used to playing with un-nerfed D, un-nerfed Invisibility, etc. At least this is the case for my country, can't comment on others.
Many tournaments here also run the ETC mission packs, as the ETC is a big deal for many people, and the people who will be attending the ETC are often the ones organizing or influencing tournaments, so naturally they get more practice.
In my area we play a mix of ETC, Nova and modified ITC/inspired-by-ITC missions, which I really like. Keeps the meta evolving, and you get to test out a lot of different builds and play styles.
It's also a dice game played by individuals, so luck and human error can't be ignored.

The ETC deck is essentially a modified GW deck cut down to 18 cards. There's only one of each "secure objective" card, which immediately removes 12 cards, and then they remove six more of the stranger ones (cast a psychic power, force an enemy to go to ground, etc) to get down to 18.
The only major changes beyond that are that the "kill units in a turn/phase" cards are increased to multiple units (3 units for shooting and generic kill in a turn, 2 units for assault) and obviously that the D3 card values are set to 2. This is all pretty standard for any modified Maelstrom event.
I'll say the only change that bothered me in the slightest was that they cap you at scoring 2 cards per turn, regardless of how many objectives you complete. But then again that might just be because I had to play Flyrants four times
Normally you'd just punish them for not competing in Maelstrom for the first three or four turns by building up a big point lead, but the two-per-turn cap definitely limits the ability to do that.

I agree and while I try to explain the difference between the two, americans just never seem to grasp it. I guess you just need to play a few to understand the differences. At first while living in Europe I was not a fan but now I actually prefer playing over in Europe. By the way it seems like a long time ago when we last met having our planes delayed trying to get to ETC switzerland!! hope all is well!
