Hi guys,

I have just received the red book for the Imperial Army & Militia and working to move all my 40k Vostroyans over to become a Militia outfit composted of Grenadier squads (as I didn't think I could get away with void armor).

I have come across 2 issues. My only Lords of War that I currently own is a Shadow Sword and Knight Paladin, both of which are only available to the Solar Axuilia. Is there any way of getting these into my list? Alternatively If I ally them with my Thousand Sons could I use my Legion Lords of war?

Sorry if these are stupid questions

If you use Marines as your main and have the knights as the low then have your imperial army as allies sure but then you cant take much for them.

Not necessarily - if you take militia as levy you can have a hundred infantry!

Thanks guys another question, can you still take fortifications in 30k? I am thinking my squishy humans are going to need some defence lines.

Can you take Imperial Armour super heavies in militia?

Could use that shadow sword then.

And yes. You can use a boat load of fortifications.

Good way to protect those madusa arty emplacements

In 30k you get a fortification on the age of darkness table, if it has rules you can take it.

If they're Traitors, You could take an Army of Dark Compliance, which lets you mix the Militia in with the Legion list (so, Legion Shadowsword).

Or you could use as much as you can as Solar Auxilia (minimum two squads of Veletaris then all the vehicles and tanks) and stick the rest of the Vostroyans as allied Militia.

Depends on how many guys you have, I guess!!

Good plan, I do plan on getting Solar Auxillia over time so that might be the best way of doing it. Plus it enables me to take my Leman Russ' as fast attack! I do like this idea a lot!

I currently have around 120 vostroyans plus command teams and heavy weapon teams it was very much a foot guard list

Ah, you might have a problem with number, though. If you take the Vostroyans as a Militia allied detachment, you're not going to be able to fit 120 in. Assuming they're Militia Infantry (probably the most accurate) then you'll only be able to field two squads of 20 plus a 10-man command squad. If you take them as Inducted Levies, you could take two squads of 50 plus a Command Squad, but Vostroyans probably look too good to be BS2 Levies!

Alternatively, if you run them as Army of Dark Compliance, you can basically take an all-Militia list (probably the most appropriate for the Vostroyans) and then include Lords of War available to Space Marines - and the latest book says they may include a Shadowsword or a Knight Paladin as their Lord of War. If you do this, there are a couple of restrictions: you must be Traitors, you can't take Militia Discipline Masters and you must have a Legion Praetor or Consul to lead them (which could be a suitably modelled Vostroyan super-commander??).

Why don't you just take them as 6x squads of grenadiers?

I've been playing militia with 5x maxed grenadier squads with 2 meltaguns, power axe, meltabomb and medic and 1 recon squad with a demo charge (trying to get the most out of army wide +1 T and +1 armor). That's 101 T4 3+ guys with fnp who can scare off other infantry with their numbers and resilience while also being scary to vehicles. This is all for around 1000 points which leaves you a lot of room to buy some toys (I took LRBTs).

If you trade the recon squad for another gren squad you're at 119 infantry which is pretty close to all your guys and is super tough.

Agreed that that's a good representation of the Vostroyans, but then he can't use his Lords of War, as neither of them are options for a Militia Primary Detachment!

So, we're trying to find ways he can use all his Vostroyans as Militia, but also take Super Heavies that are normally only for Legion or Solar Auxilia

could just do them as solar Aux TBH, or take the Knights as a Household Allied.

Regardless of whether or not you take a superheavy, you definitely should take at a least one unit of heavy artillery - earth-shaker cannons/medusas. They add range and pure damage that enables all the infantry to advance. I personally like taking a unit of each. The former to obliterate infantry and the latter (with breacher shells) to tear apart vehicles.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love
