Hi all. I though that maybe having a painting Blog would help me keep moving forward. People to answer to and all that. Plus advice and criticisms, comments and suggestions etc etc.

First up is my VERY first war-machine Mini. I've decided to support Khador. I wasn't sure what I wanted cause I hate to paint things the recommended colors. So I've been trying to figure out my own theme. I've decided on black and red with brass trim to get that steam punk look. This is my test piece.

Thoughts comments suggestions etc etc

Looking nice man. That black and red is a nice change from the usual schemes.

TWO...TWO MAN O WARS AH AH AH!!!!

I realized I made mistake and the first one I painted was a special character man-o-war. So to make him more special i gave him one red shoulder pad with the cool medal on it. The other one has a unit marker on it.

Just means I now have 4 more man-o-wars i have to paint...not 3

Black Khador is looking nice, although I'd suggest a bit more differentiation between moving parts, weaponry and plating. Weapons of man-o-wars look good, but mortar barrels are almost inseparable from shields. Black is terrible to shade, but Privateer Press have a nice "cast iron" Ironhull grey color in their P3 line to start from. Other option is to have a matt black for surfaces that are (supposed to be) painted and use a mixture of metallic grays for things that are "simply" a dark metal (like cast barrels).

A great start for an army!

Thanks! I'll keep an eye pout for that suggested paint color for the barrels

Because I've learned this from painting miniatures for armies...if you get a command...they take away your helmet.

This is the sarge mini.

Sargeant looks good!

Most paint lines have some representation of cast iron or cold dark grey. P3 Ironhull is just my current favorite. If You swear by the name of Vallejo, look for British Extra Dark Sea Grey, which is also a very good way to shade black areas. To illustrate - my own pathetic efforts (sorry for having to brighten image that much):

The recipe for weapons is Ironhull all around, then silver, black as wash, ironhull on sides, light coat of silver all around, again black in all recesses and again silver on all highlights. For cloth is black all around, Ironhull on top and sides, black as wash then Ironhull as almost drybrush (light strokes on edges).

I prefer lighter things, but sometimes black are necessary evil. Good luck with it!

Ive heard this iron hull recommendation a few times now. I'll have to track it down. My next set of minis may be dark grey with a black wash to see how that looks.

Thanks for the recipe wirecat!

So here my demolisher thingy. where as Black Bart is a sullen potential vicious juggernaut that adding color too is potentially dangerous and lethal, his brother in arms is less likely to sudden violence and is a tad more colorful

I'm trying to pose them to be a bit more....dynamic. As dynamic as 100 ton killing machine can be...

Much better contrast between painted and polished metal! I really like it!

Regarding being a bad photographer - there are two places to start being better, light and focus. If You have a chance - bring Your model and camera to different places and simply try. Natural light, direct or reflected, white background or black (definitely not a shiny black, some sort of almost black paper of cloth is better for filming dark color schemes), close and head on or from larger distance (some auto focus cameras have their own "preferences" about how to shoot)... That Black Bart was pictured nicely, while the princess... not so much.

Behold the winterguard rifleman of the Black 9th Border patrol (my army moniker). As they are forced to deal in border conflicts they are not as winter equipped as normal rifleman and are expected to be able to function in all environments, hence their rebreathers.
