Hello everyone!
When the world was reborn and warhammer fantasy turned into Age of Sigmar, my warhammer urges came rushing back from the dept of my cryx project. Such freedom, such ease of play….so many unpainted orcs stuffed in a box somewhere...I had it bad!
It’s been about a year since then, and the feeling has not left me. It has gotten stronger, more vibrant and I’m enjoying every minute.

My initial idea was to create a battalion of each type and then move one to the next.
I’m not a competitive player anyway, so I wanted to try and get as much diversity into my army as possible. Each unit in a battalion getting a unique loadout, painting scheme and unit name where possible, and including different generations (or manufacturers) of models to make the whole look like a ragtag team of greenskinz.
With the large amount of unpainted orcs and goblins collected over years of warhammer fantasy, it is easy to grow a big army with little investment. I always keep an eye out for used models that can be implemented in the army. I especially like finding special characters to act as units leaders or command models. Usually I name these characters and have their unit names after them to make it a bit more personal.

These days I play a game with them about every other week, usually thinking up a scenario myself and finding someone in the gaming club to play a fun game with. I’ve made it my mission to get more people into AoS since it is a fantastic game if you play it casually and story driven.

This is what I’ve been working on up until 8-8-2016 since the start of AoS:

So as I’m screwing around with making proper pictures of the past battalions (this shouldn’t be this hard -.- ), the least I can do is give an update on the current battalion in progress:

IRONJAWZ!
My initial idea for my Ironjawz battalion was to build a ‘ardfist, that’s 3 units of ‘ardboyz and a warchanter. However during the painting of the first unit I had to opportunity to buy a unit of secondhand brutes...and saw a weirdnob laying around at my local store….and decided to strip my Grumlok model and use him as a megaboss…Yeah so much for the plan.

The ‘ardboyz are going to be painted as three separate units with unique loadouts, but uniform in color so they could be combined and reorganised. One unit with shields, one unit with big choppa’s and one unit with 2 choppa’s each. I spend some time looking for unit leaders and got my hands on a old black orc big boss, Grimgor ironhide himself and Borgut facebeater!

The first unit is already completely done: Grolar’s Ironskinz.
I really enjoyed these guys, you don’t see shielded ‘ardboyz (blackorcs) that often but the shields are really cool. I’ve also included 3 old metal blackorcs with and created a custom Icon of Gork. The unit being led by one of the coolest Orc big bosses ever made!

Da dustgrinderz came to me as a already assembled, half painted unit. They were pretty cheap so I had no problem simple coating over them and start painting, after some moldline removal that is. They are also the first unit that I tried blood splattering on by “flicking” a brush with blood for the bloodgod paint in the general direction of the weapons. I love the effect and it’s pretty easy to do, so I expect to do it more often. Lets see how they hold up in wednesday's game.

The second unit of ‘ardboyz are lead by Grimgor, so it’s only logical I call them Grimgor’s immortalz! 3 still need some color, 4 require a dullcoat and the last 3 only need to be rebased and bloodied before putting them on transparent 32’s. Again the unit is filled with minor weapon swaps, old metal black orcs, and even a non-GW head on the banner carrier.

As the unit of ‘ardboyz was comming to an end I wanted to plaint something else before finishing the last unit. So I stripped, assembled my heroes. The way it’s looking now the weirdnog will get purple as unit color, the warchanter blue (or red) and megaboss Grumlok yellow (or blue?).

Tomorrow I’ll be playing a custom scenario, the opponent is bringing all the bad guys from the silvertower box and my orcs will be storming said tower to “smash da movin bits”. Gonna be a great game I’m sure, looking forward to see what the gauntsummoner and his ladz can dish out.

Looking great, excellent painting skills!

Will you write a Batrep of tomorrow's battle in this Blog too?

Although I am a 40k player, I love to see Warhammer Fantasy armies. Will never get used to AoS, will Always be WHFB for me though.

Hey thanks mate!
I'll be adding my Batreps to this blog as well indeed.

Do you have fantasy models? I know AoS has truly divided the community, but i've had great succes getting people onto the AoS train with custom scenario's and story driven games.
You're welcome to come and play a game with us in Den Bosch and i'll show you the fun of AoS

I haven't so AoS hasn't divided me . Am an exclusively 40k player. Den Bosch is a bit out of the way, hailing from the Bollenstreek.

Looking forward to the Batrep, and more paint!

Very cool! I really like the clear bases, are they just standard acrylic sheet lasercut into circles? Do you find they scratch in gameplay / can anything be done to prevent that? Gaming mats should be no problem but flocked tables might cause some scratches.

Heya guys
Those are indeed standard acrylic sheets lasercut by a mate of mine. They are not the perfect solution but they are a pretty damn good one none the less:
+ Cheaper then GW
+ Look good on a nice battlefield
+ No time spend on painting bases
However there are some downsides:
- Have to be attached after the model is completely finished
- Become useless if you miss-glue
- Can be scratched by sharp objects
They do not however seem to scratch on the battlefield, and we ARE using sanded terrain pieces. I was suprised by this myself, as I expected some scratching to occur instantly. But with all the benefits i figures that if they ever do become so scratched that it becomes shabby, I would just paint over they with some GW tech paint.
I just send the guy some new orders with new bases but also some movement trays. Orruks can have a lot of models on the table and I wanted to have a way to move them around quickly untill they get into a scrap. Since the laser cutter is cutting circles out of a sheet, the rest of the sheet can be used to place the circle back into. I'll share the results when I get them in. 3 trays of 10x25mm (gobins), 3 trays of 10x32mm (orcs), 2 trays of 5x40mm (brutes), 2 trays of 5x60mm ovals (boarboyz) and 2 trays of 3x50mm (ogres/throlls).

Gazgar da Old had always been good at gathering boyz, his banner had seen many flockings of different greenskinz in the many decades that he had been roaming the realms. When Ognot eadpoppa came to him with a vision about a shimmering silver tower with a “great many lootz” Gazgar was eager to gather some mobs and see this shiny tower for himself.

“Get to da tower he sayz, get to da tower?! WELL DERE IZ THREE ZOGGIN TOWERS AINIT? Gud thing that duffskull Ognot and ‘iz maniaks alwayz know where to find a proper fight or I wud drop im from every tower ere.”
In the distance Gazgar could see a large horned figure standing on top of the centre tower, without warning the air was filled with fire and death as the figured cursed and bellowed from it’s pedestal. In the left tower a shimmering figured moved through the shadows and added to the violence of the magic, it’s spells creating tears in reality allowing demonic figured to come through and engage the orcs on boars. From behind the right tower flashed a dark shadow, moving at incredible speed it came directly towards Gazgar. It’s red beady eyes set on murder and it’s tail whipping in excitement.

“Oi! That ratty iz lookin at me funny!, Go give im a bashin before he gets ere Grolar!”
With the tactical order only ardboyz could muster Grolar’s mob interlocked shields, forming a tightening noose until the rat assassin was completely surrounded. When the skittering creature finally allowed itself to be caught by a choppa it dispersed into a cloud of dust leaving the ardboyz standing around in confusion. Grolar had to bash some helmets left and right to get the ardboyz to turn their attention to a unit of humans dressed in glimmering armor and beaked helmets. Their frustration had them running full tilt at the humans, crashing into them and crushing bodies underneath shields and armoured boots.

Ognot and his second in command Izzigrit started dancing and cursing, responding in kind to the magical death spreading around them. Green fist’s appeared over a group the weird looking birdmen in the distance and green bolt of rolling energy crashed into their bodies and shields. Before the birdmen could recover they were beset by a large group of howling shielded orcs. By stabbing and chopping more birdmen fell but the a small part of the group held their ground.

Turbag and his lucky mob raced to climb the centre tower, quickly reaching the top level. The Horned mage was huge and deadly, locking Turbag and his boyz in combat while spitting curses into their midst. While they kept the Ogroid busy, Azzog Skullkraka ran up the debris of the tower, pushing turbag’s ladz out of the way to get into the fighting, his massive choppa in range of the ogroids head. But the creatures turned stronger and more violent with every wound inflicted and was racking up casualties.

Gazgar was feeling good about the progress so far, his ladz controlled the centre and right most tower and the shiny human battle line was falling apart. In the distance he heard taunts and cheers of orcs announcing the arrival of more humans. “Looks like da fightin ain’t over yet, Grolar and dem Dustgrinderz will give those pinkskins a good thumpin” Gazgar grinned and moved closer to the sight of armoured green bodies finishing up the last of the glimmering humans.

Before Grolar could get his mob to form a line again they got surrounded by a surprisingly fast horde of bare-chested warriors. Back to back with the huge dustgrinderz orcs they held off chaotic slashes with axe and blade. Their armour absorbed blows from all directions but not a single orc fell underneath the wave of attacks. When the dustgrinderz got fed up with taking blows they roared and started hacking in wild abbadon. Their massive blades lobbed off heads and limbs, gut’s spilled through the streets as a large amounts of warriors dissipated in the violence.

The fighting kept the ardboyz and brutes occupied while a single warriors jumped down from the right tower and charged at Gazgar with his Bastard sword. Gazgar was no weakling, but his old muscles did not move the way they had in the past. As the human hacked at Gazgar, the old warboss realised he had made a fatal mistake coming so close to the tower. Desperately he tried to create some distance between him and his foe by using his banner as a huge club, but the warrior was quick and deadly and before long the feared bastard sword was stuck deep into Gazgar’s chest, his banner falling to the ground

At the top of the centre tower the ogroid fought off the green warriors coming for his head, eventually he succumbed to his wounds and fell to the floor. Turbag and his boyz fought over the horns of the creature but Azzog’s attention was drawn elsewhere. From behind the tower walls a huge armoured figure appeared, massive axe in one hand and and growling creature’s leash in the other. The warlord came at Azzog, the axe inflicting gaping wounds and the creature biting at his legs and arms. Although Azzog could return a blow of two, he was clearly outmatched although he would have never admitted it. The warboss was slain as if it was nothing and the warlord let out a challenging roar.
Grolar’s Ironskinz were also suprised by heavely armoured individuals barreling down on them. For only seconds ago they finished up the bare-chested zealots and already the first ardboy fell to a heavily ornamented blade.

In the left tower the gaunt summoner was still cursing and spitting, but Ognot and Izzigrit were trying to counter his every spell, the occasional bolt of energy wizzed by and felled another orc on a boar. Da tuskmunchers had been locked in battle with the demonic creatures that had come through the rifts, and each time the boyz took one down, two smaller versions appeared! Less moving and more fighting they thought although the shimmering mage in the left tower was taking them out one by one.

Da Bonebasha boyz and da gutstranglerz were finishing up the last of the birdmen, not paying attention to the heavy armoured warriors charging into their backs with axes and bladed bucklers. Da bonebasha boyz where feeling confident, their shields enchanted by izzigrit. Behind them red painted orcs with spears started jabbing between the wall of bonebashers, more out of spite then tactical prowess. Some of the armoured warriors fell before the accidental synergy created, but the tides changed as a huge monster barreled into the ranks of orcs. The awkward collection of flesh and blades threw orcs into the air in unimaginable rage and even the enchanted shields of the bonebasha boyz could not protect them from the onslaught.

Suddenly the entire battlefield was illuminated by beams of purple light coming from every opening in the left tower. The portal had opened and the silver tower was receiving visitors! The Gaunt summoner resumed cursing with renewed vigor, cleary wishing for the greenskinz to burn before reaching the portal at his side. To protect the precious opening he called for demons in every nook and cranny of the tower.

Da Tuskmunchers were finally able to trample the last of the brimstone monstrosities. They picked up speed and charge heads on into the monster that was demolishing the orcs ranks nearby. The power of the impact allowed the bonebasha boyz and gutstranglers to disengage from the hulking beast that by now was covered in orc guts. Seeing the opening of the portal up close they started running toward the magical entrance. Although heavily protected still, the savages were able to push themselves through the demon cohort and enter the portal.

“Er...Boss? ….. Wot’s so speciul bout dis towa anyway eh?”
Ognot looked around, between the gaunt summoner on the left and the armoured warlord on the right he figured Mork was telling him to leave the tower and leg it! Izzigrit did not object and called for the boyz to leave the warlord alone and run for it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ow MAN what a game! Those silver tower models were a joy to be up against!
We rolled randomly for which tower would become the entrance on the start of the 5th turn, eventually it turned out to be the tower that I didn't focus on! Although honestly...the gaunt summoner might have been a dead giveaway
When that chieftan came down from his tower I already realised that Gazgar was deadmeat, but he had buffed an incredible amount of attacks and I was not sour to see him fall. Even after he died the Ardboyz and brutes continued to kick an incredible amount of butt, ow boy are they though and killy.

Great time on the battlefield

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm happy you like the Batrep, and Oguhmek, definitely give it a shot!

Last weekend has not been the best for painting progress, Grimgor’s immortals have been stuck to their acrylic bases and I tried some more bloodsplatter. The Bloodsplattering effect is still amazing looking but incredibly hard to control, have the flicks I don’t see any blood added at all, and the other half I startle from the amount applied at ones.

Only 3 more models to go for this unit, and besides Grimgor, the banner carrier and last regular ardboy are almost ready for some dip.

So this weekend I got in my newly cut bases AND the items needed to create some movement trays. Since I could cut out the top layer of the movement tray together with the bases themselves I was hoping it to be a nice solution that I could easily and cheaply expand on in the future. This solution did bring one big concern with it, glueing acrylics to acrylics. I was not able to find a easy solution for this on the internet so there are nothing left to do by experiment with different glues and methods.
In the end the results were not completely satisfactory, the superglue connections seems to cloud the acrylics, Wood Glue became completely clouded between two sheets of acrylics, transparent kit seems to be perfect in the first test but turned out to be an air bubble nightmare when applied to the trays and needed a lot of work to remove all the extra glue.

All trays did remain somewhat transparent so it’s wasn’t a complete failure, and all the models fit perfectly. If I can just find a better solution for the fixation of the sheet then I would happily recommend these to anyone.

I will be bringing them to my battle this wednesday, since they function just fine

Last wednesday I tried out a new format for AoS; AGE OF SIGHEIM or….something…
Basically it was an even smaller format game then the regular battles. Using regular balancing (for us that was wounds but could just aswell be points) but halving the unit sizes and taking out command models. All special rules and spells also worked for half size of the regular rule, so summoning half the regular amount of models and such. It was great fun and gave us the chance to try out the magnificent tunnel terrain created by one of our club members. If you have any questions about how we solved specific rule issues I’d be happy to awnser, but first, the battle report:

Wakin da Ded

When the scouting party of grots came back with news about a nearby ruin and the stone boxes inside that the humies like to keep their dead in, Jabberjaw got excited. Those boxes always contained powerful bones and shiny object. Gazgar reluctantly allowed Jabberjaw to take some boyz and loot this ruin, and bring back some shinies for Gazgar too.

Arriving at the fast network of caves and tunnels the boyz split up and started looking for a way to the centre of the complex where surely the best shinies would be kept. But their noisy and chaotic arrival woke up the denizens of the complex, the chosen guardians of their master’s grave, silently they started to shamble their way towards the place where their master was buried, no living thing would be allowed to leave.

The bloody basha boyz started moving into one of the side tunnels but Da stingerz didn’t feel like following those fools, instead they looked for the nearest wall that was showing through the stone formation and started bashing at it with rocks and the butts of their spears. Jabberjaw was enjoying the sight of such brass orciness and decided to lend a hand, using his magic to damage the wall further. But getting bored easily he decided to follow the other boyz into one of the side tunnels, making sure they wouldn’t try to steal any of his loot.

Da arrerboyz found another entrance, their attention fell upon an overhead bridge and they decided to climb up the walls to see what was up there. From a ledge they could see the chamber before them, and the ornaments that it contained. From the other end of the chamber came a constant red glow, and with squinted eyes the boyz could make out shambling shapes covered in shimmering metal. Before they could sound alarm, the entire complex was filled with the thundering sound of something crashing up against on of the entrances to the central chamber.

The scouts on wolves raced through one of the tunnels trying to find out where the violence was coming from, but didn’t realise they had been spotted. From a corner came a group of armoured skeletons, Their weapons already raised and charging at the scouts. Before the grots could turn tail and run, two of them were already cut down by the ancient blades of the skeletal guardians.

The bloody basha boyz came running into the burial chamber and found the origin of the noise. A waist cover in golden armour plates and pair of thin, mummified legs were all that could be seen of a creature that was trying to crash his way through the smallest entrance into the chamber. Shapes wizzed overhead and the bloody basha boyz saw skeletal bodies getting struck by the crude arrows of the Arrerboyz. Without second thought they charged the horrors before they could enter the chamber, Cheering and hacking at the surprisingly well organised skeletons. On the small walkway they tried to wrestle their enemies into the lava pit below but in turn fell the blades of their opponents. Not even Gulbash’s magical protection could save them from the undead menace.

From the tunnels Jabberjaw tried to strike the giant that was trying to force himself into the chamber, but his waaagh energy failed him, powerful magic was stopping him for concentrating his force.

Da stingerz, who had finally crashed through the wall of the complex, charged into the fray as the last of the bloody basha boyz fell to the ground. Enjoying the sigh of their rival mob fall to dusty bones and rusted weapons they stabbed at the skeletons with cheerful spirit. Arrows were shot into the skulls of the guardians, and they were pushed back for an instance. But before Jabberjaw knew what was happening, magical energy was forced into the lifeless bodies of fallen skeletons who crawled up and joined the formation once more. Spears were broken and the undead horde overwhelmed the mob of orcs.

The small entrance exploded into a hail of stone and dust, a large figure with a gigantic blade rushed into the burial chamber, nimbly avoiding this master’s coffin, behind him a second figure appeared into the new opening. Without hesitation they charged at the arrerboyz who had moved into the chamber.

Jabberjaw considered himself lucky for not becoming the target of the Ushabti’s wrath, but found his own predicament not much better as the skeleton marched at him from around the corner, coming here had been a mistake…
Before the eyes of Gulbash, the arrerboyz were chopped up, and from around the corning came the dying bellows of Jabberjaw. The time for fighting was over and the time for running had come!

Hope you enjoyed the batrep!
