I'm in the process of writing, building and painting lists that I think will be cool to play, will be fun, interesting, different and that people will want to see. So, my local group doesnt have any blood angels players. I picked the codex up and had bit of a read through, and I think I have come up with a list that I would like to play, that would hold its own, and would be cool to watch on the battlefield too.

Here's what I have come up with:

Baal Strike force detachement - 1850pts

HQ - Astorath 165pts
HQ - Chaplain, Inferno pistol, the angels wing (possible warlord) 130pts

Elites - Death Company Dreadnought, 2x blood talons, magna grapple, drop pod 170pts
Elites - Death Company Squad, 10x marines, 10x boltguns, 9x chainswords, 1x powerfist, drop pod 260pts
Elites - Death Company Squad, 10x marines, 10x bolt pistols, 5x chainswords, 2x power swords, 2x power fists, 1x thunder hammer, jump packs (Astorath goes here) 340pts

Troops - Cassor the Damned (Death company dread) 140pts
Troops - Raphens Death Company (5x marines, with jump packs, 1x fist, 1x hammer, 1x inferno pistol, 1x power sword, chaplain goes here) 210pts

Fast Attack - Drop pod (Probably for cassor) 35pts

Heavy Support - Storm Raven, stock 200pts
Heavy Support - Storm Raven, stock 200pts

This allows me to have a completely black army, pure death comapny. It is surprisingly a lot of models for armies that I like to field, with death comapny marines numbering 25, obviously all with FnP. Astorath joining the large squad allows them to have 49 attacks on the charge, with re rolls to hit and to wound. thats 25 chainsword attacks at init 5 strength 5, 10 power swords attacks at the same, 10 powerfist attacks at init 1 strength 9, and 4 hammers, at init 1 strength 9.

The other squad of armour should be able to deal with infantry squads like guard and fire warriors, with 20 rapid fire shots, and the ability to charge after firing those. (Obviously I know they cant do that if they pod in. The 5 man squad isnt an optimal build, but I have to use that particulat squad to be able to take them as a troops choice. The dreads will likely pod in turn one. those fists ae frieghtening with 7 attacks on the charge at init 5. And the ravens have me covered in the air.

Thoughts?

Wow, no love for the blood Angels?

Baal strike force is bad, because obj sec is good.

Furiosos almost always work out better than DC dreads.

DC never need Astorath. A divination libby is better.

This is a very piecemealed list with two expensive flyers coming in with no reserve manipulations.

25 DC is actually quite a fragile core. DC really do better with cheap tanks in front to block LOS for them.

Is a Baal strike force really that bad when you consider that this army pretty much all wants combat and it grants you that +1 initiative? I get how good obsec is, but from a fun standpoint I like the idea of striking first against even other marines.

As for Astorath, yeah, I think you're right. But considering there is supposed to be a degree of fluff behind this list I thought I kind of had to add him in. Plus the re rolls to wound is too nice.

Agree with you on the furioso front, again, it's supposed to be a fully black, fully death company army.

Finally, as for the fliers, I had considered this. If I drop one, and take out a fist on the big melee squad, and cut off the inferno pistol on the chaplain, then I can put a land raider redeemer in there. Still kind of fluffy, and not relying on reserves. I just though the double Ravens was more fluffy.

If the goal is all DC, then you are really limited in how much you can change.

If you are going for max damage, then Baal Strike Force is better I suppose.

I would suggest the strike force mortalis formation from exterminatus. You need a chaplain, a stormraven, 2x dc dreads and 3x dc squads. The whole lot gets crusader and the dc squads get mini-rampage. It gives them +1 attack for being outnumbered, rather than d3.

Hey buddy. Strongly considered taking this fromation, but I don't get the +1 initiative. Those extra attacks aren't worth it if you're cut down before you strike. I know that's unlikely. But there's a chance. The bonus is, with the list I have written, I can break it down into a Baal strike force and a mortalis formation, I'd have to drop a Raven for a third dread, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

If you're not using the 4th elite then don't bother with the Baal strike force as ObjSec is of more use.

Make the dread a standard furioso.

Forget Astorath. Get a libby instead or use Lemartes in that other slot. At least Lemartes has FNP.
