Hello there chaps,

Myself and a friend and my LGC are thinking about maybe starting AoS, and I'm looking for a bit of advice about how to go about it. I was a big fan of the old school fantasy, Lizardmen being what got me started before I got into 40k. We were thinking about maybe grabbing a Start Collecting box each and working from there, as the boxes seem like a good deal. (EDIT: I'm aware not all of those forces have Start collecting boxes yet, but I'm happy to spend a bit more for the right army)

The armies that appeal to me are (using old names because the new ones still confuse me ):

Lizardmen
Dwarves
Ogres
Vampire Counts

But I'd be open to suggestions on other armies too. I am keen to avoid armies that have close parallels with 40k (ie Sigmarines, orcs, chaos etc)

I'm generally a fan of smaller elite armies (I paint at snail's pace), and I like a bit of magic, or at least good magic defence. Hard hitting, probably with an emphasis on cc over shooting and good leadership.

What do you think would suit me?

Cheers in advance!

Cas

I play Vampire Counts myself (Soulblight & Flesh-eater Courts) and you can easily do hard-hitting elite armies with lots of magic.

You can for example get Morghasts as Battleline if you play Deathlords only. So 1000 points could be like:

1x Mannfred Mortarch of Night
2x Morghast Archai/Harbringer
2x Morghast Archai/Harbringer

That put you around 940 points and is legit.

Ogres would be your best bet, small elite army with few models and the most up to date rules.
Unless you're going for the flesh-eater court, your other options can significantly change rulewise in the next year or so (with GW updating all the old lines with new rules).

However if, like me, you care more about fluff and army eastetic then all bets are off
Just know that being a slow painted does not limit you to elite armies, skeletons for example can we painted incredibly fast compared to dwarfs, lizardmen or even ogres.

Is that just 5 models? I do quite like the Morghasts, would only 5 models be able to hold their own?

I do like the ogres. Is it just the big beast riders that have new rules, or do the whole army?

Also, is there a release schedule for AoS and what armies they plan to do when anywhere?

Would they be able to kill opposing units fast enough to counter this?

Depending on army/list comp really, but if people tend to learn that your only strategy is "Kill or bust" they tend to start learning new strats.

Roll a dice:

1 - Lizardmen
2 - Dwarves
3 - Ogres
4 - Vampire Counts

5 - Roll again

6 - You collect all four armies, condemning yourself, your children, and your children's children to a lifetime of crushing debt.
Totally worth it though.

Only the B.C.R have updated rules. The other ogre lines do not have "new" rules but they are in the GHB, with their point cost and stats respectively.

Any of them are great plays but understand how you want to play first. Can't tell you how many armies I have gone through...

I like the look of old dwarves, fyreslayers, new undead, and revamped Ogre kingdoms.

Pick items you would like to paint and go from there.

No madam, 40,000 is the year that this game is set in. Not how much it costs. Though you may have a point. - GW Fulchester
The Gatling Guns have flamethrowers on them because this is 40k - DOW III

That's a good point actually. Might be a fun start to something bigger though.

That's probably how it'll end

Ah, good to know. Are the rest likely to be updated in the near future do you think?

I have a fairly good idea what I'd like playstyle-wise from 40k and my dabbles with old Fantasy. Just trying to figure out what armies will suit me best in the AoS, and if the armies still play as I remember

Just remember YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY ANYTHING. Use what you already have and go on the GW sit or AoS App and use the rules that way.

This way no money is lost if your groups or some people don't like it.

Lizardmen get started is a great deal. Buy the Carnosaur and the rest of the minis are free. Can't see anyone else beating this. Thing is, are the other minis that are free good? No idea, haven't played.

If you have the money look at the IceWind Assault for Orgers. That is a might looking sweet army. Not sure if Orgers have magic though. But sweet looking non the less, and from what Dakka says, HIT HARD.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Cool, I don't own anything (except an old skink warchefe model who doesn't have rules anymore)

Without a doubt. From what i've heard around the forums and what I've asked at my local GW store, GW is going to revamp all the armies that haven't gotten an update post-GHB

Ok, thank you. Probably too much to hope, but have GW posted an expected release schedule?

Get lizards for the solar beams?

Out of those choices tho lizards got an update before the ghb so I doubt they'd get one any time soon, and unlike the new ones it won't come with new alliance traits and rules and such it'll be mostly scenarios and lore.
Dwarves kind of got one with the fyreslayers.
Ogres just got the beastclaws.

So far there's nothing like a schedule I know of but the order since the gbh has been order, destruction, destruction. So with some hints from books coming out I'd guess tzeentch arcanites could be next but no basis on that at all really. I just don't expect destruction to get another update again for a while so kind of see it as either chaos or death being next but no real idea.

We could use the extra rays in Scotland

I'm leaning more towards the Lizards/ogres/dwarves than death. I'm moving at the end of the month, so might see what armies aren't used as much where I go and pick one up.

Shame there's no schedule, but I kind of expected that. GW don't really let us know in advance

AoS was going pretty heavy but with the release of Deathwatch I would assume 40k will take the spotlight for Aug/Sept.

Rumors say that the next AOS army are the steamhead duardin (with jetpack unit apparently) so if you are patient, you can wait a bit and see how it will turn out

Sounds cool. I'll probably dabble with a few introductory games to get the feel for it, and then buy in once I know a bit more about it.
