So.. after looking around for models to start a renegade and heretics army (I wanted to do them as squats but nothing struck me for price - need a shed load of troops!) I got really drunk the other day and ended up making some purchases. Oh dear. Ok well hear me out, tell me I'm crazy, tell me I'm a genius, tell me my idea doesn't make sense... or its a cool idea.

I ended up buying just over 100 2nd edition gretchins!

All static pose, all new on sprue, some boxed, spent around £50 in total - literally cleared out ebay, bought every listing I could find :S

Wait, but them's Orks I hear you cry. Well here's my plan, there not gretchins they are in fact demonic imps!......... I'm gunna go red skin with black armour and rusty guns.

What do you guys think?? I'm not sure this will go down well?! It works in my head but not sure if its stupid.

My other ideas include customizing some old chaos dwarfs I had stashed away for D&D as leaders/HQs and sticking to the same red/black theme (just not with the skin). I'm thinking these evil dwarfs are the ringleaders - leading their hordes of daemonic imps into battle.

The gretchins have autoguns which is another reason I bought them, don't have to convert tonnes of models just chaos them up a bit with stuff from bits box and run them as lasgun/autogun. I wanna do big squads of infantry and I bought on top of that 3x heavy weapons teams which I will either have manned by the chaos dwarfs or just unmanned on a 40mm base if that's acceptable.

Anyway lemme know what you all think, getting excited about this project!

When you get them post a picture of an initial conversion. If you convert them right they may look great.

Good luck. You're a better man than most if you can paint 100+ of the same static pose.

Upside is you have 2 platoons now.

Downside is you have 100 dudes in the same pose. Grab some chaos bits to spice it up!

I've got over 100 Skaven to paint up for my Renegade list, so welcome to the club.

I recommend getting some dip shade and limiting yourself to 3 or so colours (mine are primed brown, then red/grey/steel as colours) otherwise you'll be at this forever. But the general idea of imps lead by chaos squats seems pretty solid.

Then again that makes it fast process to paint. It's 100 models that are different to each other that takes ages to paint.

Also those aren't particularly tough models to paint. 100 of those goes up quickly if you don't try anything too fancy(checkered clothes etc would be nuts )

Nonsense drunk shopping is how ended up with a sisters squad and I couldn't be happier.

Wow Mcgibs that army looks amazing!! What do you run them as?? Still getting to grips with the army lists. Also what have you used to model your heavy weapons squads and what weapons are you using in general? You have used 40mm bases for the heavy weapons too right? Think I'm gunna go down this path too, correct me if I'm wrong but official size is 60mm? My heavy weapons will probably be manned by nurglings or the gretchins or even unmanned so I'm thinking 40mm too, A) to save space on the table and b) not make the crew look lost on the base. Would this be frowned upon?

Had some pre-painted Gretchins in one of the lots as a bonus so been experimenting and trying conversions on them before I take the plunge.

So I have chopped off their ears and stuck horns to their helmets - gives them a bit more presence and loses some of the goblin aspect about them.
I'm not gunna do the red skin now - going to prime models black and then do the face white. Looked at the models for ages and had an epiphany of oni style masks and the immortals from 300. Think this will really work with the sheer numbers and waves of same grimacing face. See links below for what I mean:

I feel like this is really going to look great and importantly be a easy but effective paint job. So we're talking black primer, white face with a black wash to catch contours of mask and then paint the eyes sunken black. The bare arms of the model I'm going to leave black as if they're in full garb and maybe highlight some of the clothing with red not sure yet. Either that or stick monotone. Weapons, metal horns etc will be drybrushed dark silver/rusty.

What do you guys think? Will have to get some pics up over the weekend.

I'd shy away from straight black primer after hearing your scheme. Grey primer or a darker colored primer could be more useful. Plain black doesn't take a wash well and looks unfinished.
