In my fluff my chapter is awesome, special backstory, non codex, still a legion, but on the gaming table they play just like any other chapter.

k den.

My chapter has been on so many crusades that the HLoT fave them the full custodes armoury, and they have killed so many traitor chapters that they have enpugh grav weapons to use them as standard issue armament.
They are also the fastest marines ever created, and are all blanks. Thier blankness is so powerful that psykers within 48" of one of my marines instantly dies.

They have never lost a battle, but they are extremely syrong empaths, so they feel their losses way more strongly than others do.

one tip is that Badass =/ intreasting.

I doubt there are many people who read the grey Knights codex and said "OHH MAN! KALDOR DRAGIO IS SO AWESOME! I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIM!"

but people have read about chapters with oddball quirks and said, "hey that's intreasting, I'd love to know more about it" Here are two examples, tell me what one's most intreasting

Exhibit A: The Dupermarines have a mysterious past, but they've always been on hand to fight the IoMs enemies. fvighting some of the worst fights against the Orks, chaos, eldar and other enemies of mankind. Their chapter master is Bob Mcawesome, whose the hero of the Battle of Awesomesauce, where he single handedly defeated 3 chaos lords, and a deamon prince, with one hand tied behind his back.

Exhibit B: The Knights of Man where eistablished during the 10th founding, sometime in M35. The Knights of Man are notable for being something of patrons of the arts. comissioning work commerating their battles, on worlds where the fight was fought by local artists whenever possiable. this has lead to some outsiders to claim the Knights are vain and intreasted in self glorification, but rather stems from part of the chapter cult that teaches that to comp[enstate for the violence of battle, the brothers of the chapter must strive to ensure they leave a positive behind as well. The Chapter has been without a chapter master since the early 39th Millenia when their chapter master was slain in personal combat with a Chaos Lord affliated with the Emperor's children, leaving to a lasting hatred of the chaos legion. in the aftermath chapter politics produced a command triumvirate consisting of the leader of one of the chapter's 1st company, as well as the cheif librarian and chaplin. while this command is normally effective, it has on occasion resulted in tension and infighting within the chapter.

Example A's certainly more bad ass, but Exhibit B is more INTREASTING

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Bob McAwesome is so awesome other successors look to him as their spiritual liege, while other chapters know in their hearts they will never be as awesome. Such awesomeness might make any other Chapter Master prideful but not Bob McAwesome, who shows an awesome amount of humility despite the baseless jealousy and envy of others.

I do think there is nothing worse than making your own rules for your personal army that makes your characters more like Primarchs or somesuch rather than normal warriors.

Fluff is brilliant. But it shouldn't make your army uber-elder/marines/necrons/daemons/chaos/guard/tau/orks.

Customised rules should be fun and fluffy and make your characters a LITTLE bit more interesting or tough. Eg giving your Captain Zealot or something. Nothing that's going to make him a superman.

For Example my Emperor's Knights Chapter has lots of fluff.

They have a special company called Knights Penitent where disparate squads of 3 men from broken tactical, assault and dev squads are put together to form special multi-role teams.
Would I use this unit a lot during gaming? not unless my opponent allowed it.

They also have Knights Errant, single models who cannot join any squad but have Feel No Pain and Relic Blades since they are exiles from the chapter on Death Oath missions.

In the end I think if there's a good reason for your character/ special squad to have a rule then it's ok. but otherwise keep them Codex.
