I am painting a bunch of eldar bikes and vehicles red. I tried the citadel mephiston red spray and it was way more orange than in the pot. So, I ended up redoing the base coat by hand. Does anyone know of a better brand of spray for the base coat?

I've used the mephiston red spray often for my BA and it is a perfect colour match for me. Perhaps an bad can, different primer used or additional shaking required? I find out of a pot the mephiston red is a little more matt however that may just be down to how I thin my paints.

I'm currently doing a rhino, I sprayed it yesterday with mephiston red, I'll double check for you tonight and take a photo. Its probably a bad can then as i shake the can really vigorously for about 30 seconds (in different directions) and I've had no problems with any of the GW cans when all the advice I've read tells me to shake it longer. I guess I like to live dangerously ;-)
In fact I remember being really impressed just how well it did match even after expecting it to be a very close match.
The difference I found in matt/satin was corrected easily with a thin layer of lahmian medium.
I'd suggest spaying some card or something with it, take it back to GW and see if they will replace it, they may want to test it themselves but they'll likely give you a new one.

My experience with the GW mephiston red spray was poor to say the least. Over standard black primer it went on either far too thin so the black showed through, or to get sufficient even coverage it eliminated detail as it went on far too thick.
Swapped back to the Airbrush and Vallejo model air red for base coating any red things. Much better....

Take a walk down to your local auto-parts store, and look at their spray paint aisle. Pricey, yes. But you aren't going to need much if it's just a base coat for your models.
These paints are a bit more harsh than you're probably used to, so take heed! And make sure your models are primed well. Haven't had a "melt" down yet, but just in case...
Generally, my red is to prime Rust Red (Krylon/Rustoleum), airbrush Wicked Colors Red of choice (lighter, or darker), then onto my highlights, shadows, and brushwork.

Two light coats with mephiston red spray then I used a little out the pot thinned with water 1:3 ratio water to paint.
This is when dried and after a coat of gloss varnish

Army Painter makes a Dragon Red which is much darker...how dark were you wanting to go? These guys are Dragon Red (and dipped afterwards meaning it's a bit darker still)
I believe Army Painter sells a Blood Angels appropriate red, a darker Dragon Red and a super dark Chaotic Red or something.

Hit your local discount store and grab some red primer. That way you can primer and base coat in one pass. I do that for my 30K Mechanicum/ 40K Mechanicus/ KoW Ogres.

Surprisingly, I have had good luck with Liquitex Spray lately--at least with my Blood Ravens Terminators. I used Cadmium Deep Red Hue (it's a shade or two deeper than Vallejo Gory Red) on top of some rustoleum red primer (it's a brown rust color). I had questionable results the first time I used it on the Land Raider, but I tried again and it was great (luck, weather, shape? I don't know) The only worrisome part was that I had to spray up close for coverage which made it 'glop' on (standard cap at 6"). I thought I was going to need a one month mineral spirits bath for ol' Termy, but it shrank and dried just fine. Color match and touch ups may be worth planning out, depending on the shade, hue, etc. You can always distill your can, though.
