Inquisitorial Keeper of the Xenobanks
|
Hi there !
I'll have a game versus 1500 pts of tyranids this week end or the next one.
So I came up with this list:
A lvl 2 librarian with an auspex
A command squad (4 veterans with combi plasma, 1 apothecary) in a razorback (lazcannon and twin-linked plasma)
10 sternguard in a drop pod
1 ironclad (dual heavy flamer) in a drop pod
2 *10 tac marines in rhinos
5 Tac marines in a drop pod (1 combi plasma, 1 plasma)
1 stormraven
Ok, I have a lot of plasma weapons to fight tyranids, but it is to kill the synapse creatures (trygon prime, zoanthropes, sporocyst...).
The idea is to kill the big ones, and to let the little ones runaway or to kill each others.
I think I have the number to fight them, but what do you think about this list ?
Am I lacking something (flamers ?^^ ) ?
Feel free to share you experience !

Unsure if an Auspex is really worth it. But it is a minor point cost, I'd highly recommend dropping the Stormraven in favor of two Stormtalons. If you aren't bringing anything in a Stormraven it is essentially a huge waste of points since 2 Talons will give far more firepower.
Also, the Command Squad is wasted if you aren't going to give them anything. I'd suggest dropping the Las-Plasma for a regular Rhino and use the saved points to out the squad with flamers, so they could provide cover fire.

The thing is: I haven't any stormtalon. I wish I have one, but no.
What do you mean by "giving" a thing to the command squad ?

A command squad comes with lots of options, they are one of the few squads that can be fully equipped with special weapons, taking them with only a single combi-plasma seems like a waste of their utility. If you want a cheap assault unit you'd be better off with honor guard.
What other heavy weapons you have that be subbed in for the Stormraven, keep in mind you have no reserve manipulation so if you roll poorly you might be waiting along time on your gunship.

Ok, so, I heard you and I did some changes:
A lvl 2 librarian with an auspex
A command squad (4 veterans with plasmaguns, 1 apothecary) in a rhino
5 sternguard in a drop pod
1 ironclad (dual heavy flamer) in a drop pod
2 *10 tac marines in rhinos
5 Tac marines in a drop pod (1 combi plasma, 1 plasma)
1 stormraven
5 devastator (4 ML)
Do you think it is better ?
The problem with honor guard, is that I'm afraid they will die to flyrant shooting early.

Plasma on the command squad isn't a bad idea. I like to run with them, although I almost always have to run them with doctrines because they like to blow themselves up. The Stormraven makes more sense when you mention your bringing it as an anti flyer, and if it's your only skyfire option then having it to counter a Flyrant might not be a bad choice. Alternatively you could use it take Honor Guard with power mauls which would do a number on Nids, only problem is if it doesn't arrive.

Eventually, I came up with a whole different list: all in !
I found that the tyranids rely heavily on the psychic phase, and lack in AP2. So I decided to take a lot of 2+ save and an inquisitor to protect me from their psy powers.
Here is the list:
Chapter Master in terminator armour, the shield eternal and thunder hammer (he is here to protect his honor guard squad and to kill the big bugs, who have AP2 in assault).
7 honor guards in a drop pod. Their 2+ save will protect them from the weak weapons of the tyranids, and my opponent will have no other choice than to try to kill them, when they come directly into his lines.
1 ironclad dreadnougt, with a heavy flamer. Why him ? Because with his AV13, my opponent will have no other choice than to use his flyrant to get his rear to kill him, as absolutly no tyranid bioform in his collection can pass through his front armour at range, and even a carnifex faces death at hand to hand with him. So, he won't be able to use his flyrant against my honor guard, or he will let my ironclad free.
9 vanguard veterans, with 5 power mauls. I hope that, thanks to the BIG distraction send to his lines, my opponent will let them free. They will assault big swarms of lesser xenos and kill them all in hand to hand.
5 tactical marines, one combi plasma and one plasma gun, in a drop pod. I need a 3th drop pod, and they can kill a lone zoanthrope, disturbing my opponent's synapse network.
10 tactical marines one flamer, n=one combi flamer, one ML in a rhino.
1 Land Speeder Typhoon, always useful
1 vindicator. Again, a big threat to his godless xenos, my opponent's can destroy it at range without using his flyrant to get its flanks. So, another target saturation for hos most powerful unit.
And an allied witch-hunter inquisitor, with liber heresius, combi flamer and null rod (going with the hono guard). He is able to give his squad hatred, or counter attack / counter strike (is this the name of the rule in English ?), and prevent any psy power being used on his squad.
So, a highly different list. I never played such a list, do you think it can work correctly ?

Missilelaunchers should be ideal against Nids, it can fire blast at hordes, krak missiles against bigger Nids and flakk missiles at Flyrants.
