Dudley. That thriving hub of British culture. A sprawling mega-metropolis. A place worthy of its own miniature.

It looks sweet though. Love that sculpt.

The sprawling 60s shopping centre that the store is situated in is locally known as "Merry Hell". In addition, the store is actually relocating within the centre and they're more than likely getting rid of the massively well liked manager who's been with GW for goodness knows how long.

Who is the manager? If it's the Long haired fella then I am saddened to hear this. Is it an educated guess?

I wonder what's launching. Surely it can't be 8th too soon. Hmmm...

Wouldn't be White Dwarf would it? Thought they were doing Kharne for that though...

Mmh... not that impressed. It has the sword/scabbard and the auxiliary grenade launcher of the original captain but that's it. I like the front armour plates of the lower legs though - looks a bit like those from the old Space Hulk plastics.

Um... and could you please correct the typo in the title? As a German I now have that awful Leekspin in my head...

Yes.

Is it UK only? We all want to celebrate Dudley's store here in the US. We couldn't be more thrilled.

Can I buy the model now?

Anyone want to pick one up for me and ship it to the usa? There is no way I'll be able to make it across the pond to attend the opening...

Maybe we'll get lucky and gw will release it on their site for a day. A guy can wish I guess. Looks like it will be $75 on ebay...

I like it. But I like the original more.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

I also prefer the original, this is a nice sculpt but deviates too much to tickle my nostalgia bones!

Nice mini but the circumstances around the 'new' Dudley store opening are a massive shame.

The current Dudley store in the Merry Hill shopping centre has two gaming tables and three staff. They are closing it at the end of August and have made all staff there redundant.

The 'new' Dudley store is opening in the very same shopping centre, just on the ground floor. It will be run as a smaller 'one man store'. Whatever that means.

None of the current Dudley staff will be relocated to the new store (that is literally only 300 feet away!).

So not really something worth 'celebrating'.

That's terrible. I would like to register a protest by buying their new terminator and leading him to his horrible death time after time!

That's what I thought, the 100th US store one wasn't called a launch.

Some new 40K based game?

It means the work done by 3 will be done by 1, so you can look forward to:

* Almost no gaming space
* Vastly reduced opening hours
* Store closing for lunch and bathroom breaks
* Having to wait if it's busy

Ah, that's awful. GW do love to dump on their staff.

It's a cracking figure though. I think it'll be available throughout the UK for that day, a bit like the Imperial Marine. I'll probably get him as an early birthday present for myself, and use him to lead either my Deathwing or as the Chapter Master of my Righteous Fists... can't decide yet!

Why are they doing this ? What is the interest in closing a good store to open a less good store ?
Are they really loosing so much money they can't pay three men by shop ?

Games Workshop's new method for minimising costs in the bricks-and-mortar front is to make as many stores as possible one-man-bands. They then ask the impossible of their manager/staff, by demanding they maintain the sort of painting/gaming/teaching/sales program that a multi-staffed store can, oh, and make sure you hit and exceed your sales targets, based on last year's sales +X%, or those bonuses will go bye-bye!

But hey ho; what do I know, I'm just a toy and game retail manager by training and trade...

I mean, if this look ridiculous to me, to you, and probably to a lot of people, why not to them ?
I guess this is how the modern world is, today: asking the impossible to the employees, and punishing them because they don't succeed.
If they go, no problem, there are thousands of others asking for a job...

It lowers costs and improves return for shareholders and the company's bottom line looks better.

That's it, basically. Plus it makes life easier for senior management because you can just go "YOU ARE FAILING, DO BETTER" and then your problem store either shapes up or has a new manager! Success!

Bingo. GW, like Hollywood, fashion or comics has a lot of fans eager to get a foot in the door. If they wanted to staff their stores with unpaid interns they probably could

Like many people I think it will (and has) bite them. The whole point of the costy stories is to evangelize new customers, and if you don't have the staff to that the chain of new customers dries up and the community and company suffers.

One of their KPIs is just 'how many new stores did we open', so it's a tick in the box even if it's in the same mall, and smaller.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

They have this idea that customers will buy from them whatever services they don't provide and whatever barriers they put in the way.

I assume this move will save them a lot of money - smaller unit means lower rent and taxes, and dropping from 3 staff to 1 will save a lot of wages too. They usually see a drop in income but it seems to be countered by the drop in costs.

It's not so much that they can't afford to run a 3 man shop, but they just don't see the need and are still running on a campaign of rampant cost cutting to offset the falling revenues.

Don't forget the Managers start on a salary akin to a shop assistant elsewhere. I loved the manager interview process, but the working conditions and pay were a joke, so I didn't ever progress to accepting a role.
