So if we wanted to avoid putting monofilament on the shredder and give it the template rule, what would we want it to look like exactly?

Just a strength 6 AP- template? Possibly with rending? That would need to be somewhat more expensive than it is now, but it would still be a neat option.

I kind of like the idea of making it higher strength if the model firing it is in a transport, representing the idea that you shoot out molecule-thin wire and then zoom past them, slicing them up with the unspooled wire. But that gets complicated and unwieldy considering combat speed rules, etc.

It should have monofilament or Shred. Even though not all monofilament weapons have the Monofilament rule, they have some kind of special rule (see Kiss of Death/ Embrace).
I think if you are not going to give it monofilament, then keep it as is (Str6, AP - , Shred) but just make it Template

I'd be fine with that. I'd also be fine with swapping Shred for Monofilament.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Or make it large blast as it is a net. I mean crap if the shredders were large blast and same profile i might actually use them if somebody made em 10-15 pts. You do take 4 of them in a unit of trueborn or scourge. That said you'd need pinpoint deepstrike from a webway to get em where you need em.

Not a bad idea either, although I suspect dark eldar players would start getting every nervous as they tossed short-ranged strength 6 pie plates around near their paper thin vehicles and toughness 3 infantry.

Make em 10 pts a pop then. The short range will balance it out. I mean you have to commit to a webway portal HQ to get them in short range as they come in and your only other choice is to get them in there through other means. I mean i heard a friend say shredders aren't even worth 5 pts and it's a small cost by itself. For 10 pts for a large blast it's not half bad. I mean str 6 large blast might actually put a little bit of scare into light walker spams if you ever ran into it. I mean they're what 2 hull points a piece? Throw 4 str 6 large blasts at armor 10 vehicle squads with 2 hull points each and you're bound to kill a couple.

Or scatter back and kill yourself.

Exactly.
Dark Eldar have no business shooting Str6 blasts at only 12". Small blast is risky enough, but Large blast has a higher chance of clipping yourself.
Strip half my Hull point off my own vehicle and/or wound my own unit with no FNP? No thanx.

10pts. Make it a Template. Done.

Oh, and I just re-read the Wargear section. When I posted this I thought that Haywire blasters and Heat lances were in the Special weapon section, not the Heavy weapon section
In addition to lifting the "scourges only" restriction, I would move those to the Special Weapon section. That way 5-man Warrior units could have either.
