Oh and they make a great intro army because they're big and intimidating and easily beaten.

I think around 2nd they were more lizards and thus, lizardmen in space until they tried to get away from that idea. They even still had sentient and consciously independent slave races.

About the same time the Squats got...I'm not finishing that pun.

Didn't the squats actually get gobbled up by the nids leading up to their.... *insert the well known pun here*

I do like them; the 'expendable swarm' feel is very satisfying, as is the other approach - broodlords and lictors have a very nice 'thing in the shadows' feel to them.

Voreaphilia fetish is another possible reason.

Because Tyranids reproduce by eating and digesting a lot of people.

I can understand why people choose tovplay a lot of factions:
Space marine if you like the super soldier army,
Imperial guard if you prefer the traditional army,
Chaos if you despise the imperium (or your edgy enough),
Eldar if you like a more advanced race,
Necrons if your a bit dead inside,
Tau if your too lazy to move your models once you've deployed,
Orks if your a bit... Well you get the picture.

You don't play Imperial guard because you prefer the traditional army. You play it because you find normal men and women fighting valiantly against a universe of super soldiers, high-tech xenos, and scary tyranid aliens inspiring, unlike those super soldiers that need fancy gear and geneseed to be heroic.

Would be an incredibly daft reason to spend a lot of cash on an army, no?

That alongside it being a really creepy fetish. Humanity never fails to startle me.

By itself, yeah, it'd be a terrible reason.

But it could be a consideration a few people give to their army choice along with the numerous other reasons in this thread.

I have a Tyranid army, because it's the closest thing to the xenomorphs in Aliens, and I was obsessed with the Aliens franchise when I was young. So nostalgia.

The rules for them are horrible though :(

In Warp Transit to next battlefield location, Destination Unknown

My son plays them for 2 reasons, the looks of the models, and the fact that they are the most exotic of all the Armies.

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!

Aside from the aesthetics/fluff, they are the only non-human army.

Orks - Green humans
Eldar - Humans with pointy hats
IoM - Humans
Tau - Blue humans
Necron - Metal humans/Terminator Knock-off
Chaos - Humans

In the future . . . there are no aliens. Just humans.

Demons - Humans with demonic features, accompanied by dogs and various earth creatures, also with demonic features.

I don't know....Tyranid Warriors look pretty human to me. Hell, the xenomorphs from Aliens look pretty human when you think about it.

Agreed. I should say that the Tyranids are the least human. At least they largely lack free will and emotion, which are more important to something feeling human than the number of limbs :-/

Xenomorphs are a totally different story and were made to be reflections of humans from the get-go.

A bit insulting isn't it? Generalising a group of people based on negative stereotypes. This is the sort of thing that leads to racism.

This is literally the biggest overreaction on this forum to a statement like this.

Really?

Wow, Dakka's a really calm and tame place.

But I kinda already knew that.

I'm not afraid.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

No, I mean that some of the other forums I go on have people who launch into hour-long angry, hateful rants about other countries simply for not using the same terminology their country does.

Seriously, compared to those other forums, Dakka actually is very calm.
