Hello Dakkanauts!

I just unboxed a new audio interface and it came packed in these two really cool cardboard pieces. I almost immediately thought zone mortalis tiles!! I think I actually was more thrilled about the cartons than the device itself to be fairly honest:

With some models for size comparison:

And model line-of-sight angle (note that perfectly placed numeric code embossed in the middle!!!):

I was thinking some ruined 40k-universe Imperial church with pews? Maybe a landing hangar with some storm talons in there? Playable table scenery or diorama? I also have two of these!

What would you guys use these freaking awesome egg-cardboard-ish material for scenery wise?

EDIT: I was thinking maybe a Necron tomb? Those pew-looking things may look cool as sarcophagi! Totally worth the post edit!

Dude nice

you could build up the outside and the side walls, make it into a clif side bunker or something so you could play out side and inside.

you could also chuck in a ton of pipes and cabling into the recesses and put some mesh on top so that its a flat surface.

make it like a hanger or a military garage.

Oh yeah, this is gonna be heavily modified, but an amazing starting point! I agree with the hangar possibility. Looking into some fluff references that describe to some degree the inside of the Imperial Fists Phalanx with regard to large vehicle storage (if any fluff gets that detailed) and maybe create a Phalanx hangar/storage diorama.

Have any resources for scenery bits? I'm gonna do some dumpster diving to see what junk I can dig up that may work with this. Thanks for the input!

Well it depends on what kinda tools you have.

you could make some pretty cool looking machinery stuff out of old printer toners and most offices have a few of those lying around. or other things of that nature but its nice to have a band saw to do it. hacksaws can work but im lazy

personally i would make a MDF box maybe like 1/2 inch thick to support the damn thing, and make the walls high enough to fit like a imperial flyer of some sort or a tank. build up a gate using the imperial skyshield landing pad. then paint the outside to look like concrete, maybe add small strips of mdf or card stock to make it look more like a building.

otherwise go get a ton of random tubes/ straws wires and other junk that would look industrial

also look for junk toys that have gears and motors, you can ususaly take out the plastic gears in there wash all of it first to get rid of the grease.

Funny how 10 different people could look at the same piece and see 10 different possibilities.
I see them as abandoned chemical tanks. Different colored goo in the shallows, pipes, vents, maybe a walkway or two. Fill in the verticals on the outside and water effects in the depressions.

That's exactly why I posted this. We're all creative minds and none think exactly alike! Never thought of adding water effects to the depressions, and I've never worked with compounds to create water or liquid effects. I think I'll seize the opportunity here.

Also, I've never done anything this size/scale, so I know I'm gonna have a shopping list as far as large-scale brushes and tools. I already own an airbrush and plan on using it extensively in this project considering the size.

This cardboard has some flex to it and naturally some absorbency. Should I be using my standard Citadel/Vallejo paints on this? Should I maybe go with standard acrylics?

Maybe build a frame around it, flip it upside down, spray in expanding foam, trim off flat on bottom after expanding? It doesn't "push" much when there's a big open spot to expand out of so it shouldn't warp the packing much and gives you a solid base to work off.
Then add pipes, walkways and rubble. Spray paint a base coat, airbrush highlights and washes, add some slightly colored water effects.
Boom!

Its cardboard so seal it all around with a varnish

cheap spray can one from home depot with 2x coverage or whatever is hot today could work.

then paint on top of it.

Does that varnish go on thick? I want to try to preserve that texture as much as possible, and as you can tell from the close-ups, it's pretty subtle.

That im not sure

you could always test it on the underside where you are not using it

What's the other side look like? That's probably how I'd start.

To me it isn't nearly as interesting aesthetically as what is shown, but I'm always open to suggestion (after all, I do have two of these!), so if you can think of any cool ideas with this side versus the other, let me know! And thank you for taking the time, sir!

That was the first idea I had. I was thinking a strategically-important Necron tomb with a terminator raid party for a battle diorama, but then it was suggested to put liquid effects into the depressions which very much appealed to me as well. Trying to think of a way to incorporate that. Maybe have the raid party Chaos and the liquid be blood, which, when incorporated with Chaos, never seems to be questioned. Wherever there is Chaos, there are pools of blood. Period. lol

Hmmm...yeah the underside is far rougher texture. I'm not "seeing" anything jump to mind immediately.

Indeed too rough for necron who often have very smooth obsidian kinda walls.

I think I'm gonna let this post float on a bit longer to collect even more ideas and then utilize the expertise of the master-crafters that compose this community to vote on those ideas. So far I have:

1. Necron Tomb Diorama (with or without raiding party, feel free to specify what you believe would look cooler)

2. Imperial Fists (Chapter open to suggestion) fortress-monastery armory interior (with parked stormtalons or other reasonably-sized vehicles, or even an honorary hold for sleeping dreadnoughts?)

3. Imperial Cult church ruins interior providing cover for the last stand of a squad of (insert army/chapter here)

4. (just thought of this) An IG (possibly Death Korps of Krieg for that spooky 3rd Reich look with the huge flags and whatnot) with a general on a pulpit of sorts addressing his forces en masse. Maybe a chaplain blessing the forces before a major battle?

To me it looks like a hangar bay, with compartments for the different vehicles, kinda like the rebel base in Empire Strikes Back.
